Roland Bunce is among thousands who entered the contest with retail giant Next in a bid to win a £2,000 first prize.
But his unconventional appearance caught the eye of web jokers and went viral, prompting thousands of votes. The 24-year-old’s popularity surged after his profile page was re-tweeted 1,500 times and ‘liked’ on Facebook by more than 10,000 fans.
Mr Bunce, from Belfast, was also the most talked about person on social news website Reddit with tens of thousands of readers vowing to vote for the computer science graduate.
On his Facebook fan page, he wrote: ‘Thanks for all for the support and thanks to the person who started the group, I’m overwhelmed.’
More than 5,000 entries have been received since the contest was launched on Monday.
It closes on June 28 with the winners also scooping a photoshoot and an introduction to modelling agency Storm. Next said it was delighted Mr Bunce had entered.

Most of Australia's dangerous shit is in the oceans and rivers: blue-ringed octopi, irukandji, cone snails, saltwater crocs, etc. They have the most venomous snake in the world, but it's a wimpy little thing that lives away from human settlement and isn't very aggressive, compared to black mambas in Africa that will chase you down and bite your face for the lulz. Giant huntsmen (clock spiders) aren't even mildly dangerous, just fucking big.

Still, you're more likely to get shot or raped in Africa than maimed/envenomed.

A woman died from a heart attack caused by shock after waking up to discover she had been declared dead - and was being prepared for burial.
As mourning relatives filed past her open coffin the supposedly dead woman suddenly woke up and started screaming as she realised where she was.
Fagilyu Mukhametzyanov, 49, had been wrongly declared deceased by doctors but died for real after hearing mourners saying prayers for her soul to be taken up to heaven in Kazan, Russia.

Devastated husband Fagili Mukhametzyanov, 51, had been told his wife had died of a heart attack after she'd collapsed at home suffering from chest pains.
Mr Mukhametzyanov said: 'Her eyes fluttered and we immediately rushed her back to the hospital but she only lived for another 12 minutes in intensive care before she died again, this time for good.
'I am very angry and want answers. She wasn’t dead when they said she was and they could have saved her.'
Hospital spokesman Minsalih Sahapov said: 'We are carrying out an investigation.'
