Husband seeking kidney donor for wife overwhelmed by response

Response overwhelms man seeking kidney for wife
A husband who walked the streets last week, desperate to save his wife’s life, says he is overwhelmed by the response to his effort to find a kidney donor.
William Swilling has been married to Jimmy Sue Swilling for 56 years. He said she was born with one kidney, and has been suffering with kidney disease since their first child was born 52 years ago. Now her remaining kidney is failing, and no one in her family is a match.
William Swilling said, “I didn't know what to do. I thought of this Tuesday night. Had (the sandwich board sign) made. I'm walking town to town and will walk back if I can make it.”
Swilling said he's still working nine hours a day because of the couple's financial situation. He walks the streets on his days off from Consolidated Southern Industries, wearing the sign with his phone number, 864-314-0212.
Swilling said on Sunday that he had six pages of names of those who say they are willing to be tested. He was choking back tears when he talked to News 4 and said that the response has left him speechless.
Swilling said he is willing to pay for the gas for anyone who drives to the clinic to be tested. The testing will be free.
Swilling is continuing to walk with his sign, since the more people he can find who will get tested, the better the chance there will be that a match for his wife will be found.

    Video on the website.

Philadelphia police now say it was a hoax that prompted a US Airways flight to return to Philadelphia on security concerns.
US Airways Flight 1267 returned to Philadelphia this morning shortly after takeoff because of an anonymous tip called in to Philadelphia police.
A name provided in the tip matched the name of a person on the flight. The tip claimed that the person was carried a dangerous substance, which led to the decision to recall the flight. Armed authorities boarded the flight after it returned and sought out the man, who apparently was caught off guard by the situation.
"He was obviously very alarmed, as I would be if heavily armed police officers entered a plane to take me off," Philadelphia Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan tells The Associated Presssaid. "And he was certainly stunned. And that's why this is no joke, this is no laughing matter."
Sullivan went on to call it "a pretty nasty trick."
The Airbus A319 ultimately was cleared after a search by bomb technicians.
Sullivan says the perpetrator of the hoax faces serious charges if found.
"It's just an incredibly foolish and irresponsible thing to do and, bottom line, it's criminal," he says.

The Ohio parents of Olympic gold medalist Tianna Madison have sued her, saying she spread stories they had been selfish and bullying and cheated her financially.

Elyria residents Robert and Jo Ann Madison filed the libel, slander and defamation lawsuit Thursday in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court in Cleveland. They say they've been loving, supportive and generous parents.

Tianna Madison was on the winning 4x100-meter relay track team at the Summer Olympics in London. She won the gold with Allyson Felix, Bianca Knight and Carmelita Jeter in world-record time. The lawsuit also names her husband, John Bartoletta.

The Tampa, Fla., couple have an unpublished phone number and couldn't be reached for comment Friday. The lawsuit doesn't mention an attorney representing them.

The parents' lawsuit seeks more than $25,000 each in compensatory and punitive damages.

AN alleged new-age cult, run by a former bankrupt who claims to be Leonardo da Vinci reincarnated, is expanding its multimillion-dollar enterprise with the help of Brisbane's medical mainstream.

Universal Medicine, whose practitioners offer controversial treatments to ward off cancer including "esoteric breast massage", is drawing a growing number of clients to its Brisbane clinic via referrals from eye and lung surgeons, rheumatologists and GPs.

...Universal Medicine, which teaches followers to avoid the "negative energy" in everything from cheese and alcohol to sleeping late, sells merchandise from books to pillow cases, holds concerts, Vietnam retreats and "relationship workshops" that gross up to $36,000 a session.

I must be missing this somehow. Theres no way noone has posted this yet. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...n_1880348.html

Ervin McKinness, a 21-year-old aspiring rapper, tweeted about driving drunk at 120 mph minutes before dying in a fiery one-car crash that killed the rapper and four others.

McKinness posted the now-ominous tweets about speeding while driving drunk on the account @ink2flashyy at 1:19 a.m. on Sept. 2.

Drunk af going 120 drifting corners #FuckIt YOLO
    — 2.7.5 Inkyy(@ink2flashyy) September 2, 2012

"YOLO" is an acronym for "You Only Live Once." The phrase was made popular by singer Drake, who used "YOLO" in his song "The Motto."

Another tweet reportedly posted by McKinness talked about drinking and driving. The tweet read, "Driving tweeting sipping the cup f*** yolo I'm turning it up," according to the Daily Mail. This tweet has since been deleted but retweeted on the account.

At 1:40 a.m., McKinness died in a crash in Ontario, Calif., at Creekside Drive and Haven Avenue when the 2005 Nissan Sentra ran a red light, skidded out of control and slammed into a wall, according to the San Bernardino County Sun. The car wound up in the backyard of a home. Marquell Bogan, 23, and Dylan George, 20, both of Ontario; Jonathan Watson, 21, of San Bernardino; and JaJuan Bennett, 23, of Rancho Cucamonga were also killed in the crash.

All were pronounced dead at the scene except Bogan, who was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to CBS News.

Despite McKinness' tweets, police reported that it was actually Watson who was behind the wheel, according to the San Bernardino County Sun. "They're certainly looking at that because it will be a vital part of the investigation, but it's too early to give an opinion as to whether it (drunken driving) was a cause or contributed to the crash," Ontario police Sgt. David McBride told the San Bernardino County Sun.

Tweets were posted on the rapper's official Twitter account this week. Whoever took over the account is attempting to clear McKinness' name.

McKinness, who went by the names Jew'elz and Inkyy, had signed a record deal, according to Vibe. An official video for his song "Dreams" was published on his YouTube channel, InkyyTV, back in April.

An art history book, minus the art
Students at Ontario College of Art and Design were forced to buy a $180 textbook filled with blank squares

An art history book, minus the art
This article originally appeared on Hyperallergic.

Hyperallergic What is this, October!? According to a blog post published by a disgruntled parent of a student, the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) is forcing students to buy an art history book for $180 — which wouldn’t be unheard of, but the catch is that the publishers of this book didn’t get any of the image rights for the artwork it includes. To reiterate, that’s an art history survey without any pictures.

Instead of having pictures of artwork, the book, ”Global Visual and Material Culture: Prehistory to 1800“ (so named for the course it goes with), instead just has placeholders with instructions to see a digital version for the actual image. It’s like a website with only broken image links. Just check out this hilarious sample page from the book:

An excerpt page from the pictureless textbook (courtesy ashleyit.com)

At first, it seemed that the publisher couldn’t clear the copyright permissions before the book’s print run. But as it turns out, the book is actually a zombie-like combination of parts of three different art history books. A letter from the school’s dean stated that had they decided to clear all the images for copyright to print, the book would have cost a whopping $800.

The disgruntled parent complains, “I’m not particularly interested in paying any amount for an imageless art history textbook.” We’re inclined to agree. In the context, OCAD’s faux-inspiring slogan of “imagination is everything” takes on a whole new meaning. Don’t have any pictures of art? Just imagine them all!

I'm pretty sure people major in art history because they want to learn about art, not because they want a degree.

Elderly woman who botched religious fresco demands royalties

Cecilia Gimenez, who is in her 80s, made headlines across the world after attempting a DIY restoration that left the 19th century fresco of Christ at her local church in Borja resembling a monkey.
The altered image of Ecce Homo – Behold the Man – became an internet sensation and sent thousands of curious sightseers to the Sanctuario de Misericordia to laugh at her handiwork.

Authorities threatened to sue Mrs Gimenez for her unauthorised attempt, which she insisted had been carried out with only good intentions because the painting was in need of repair.

But popularity for the modified masterpiece grew with even budget airline Ryanair offering cheap deals to nearby Zaragoza airport encouraging "pilgrims" to visit the work that was quickly dubbed "Ecce Mono" – Behold the Monkey.

An internet petition to keep the repair job garnered widespread support and seizing an opportunity to swell its coffers, the church began levying a 4 euro (£3) entrance fee on visitors, earning 2,000 euros in the first four days.

Lawyers acting for Mrs Gimenez now insist she should be entitled to a cut of the profits, which she wants to go towards a charity of her choice.

    False.

Plenty of teachers get as many degrees as they want, same with people who work towards certificates. More degrees/certificates = usually higher salary. My high school language arts teacher got an additional couple grand a month just from completing her geology degree during summer lol.
