The benders in the original series were basically the leftovers of 100 years of natural selection taking part. The only truly weak bender overall seems to be Korra and i'm going to link that partially due to her low spirituality. She has the technical skill but I've not seen anything from her as impressive as what Aang was capable of in episode 1.
Tenzin seems pretty strong and Lin suffered from technology actually catching up to slowly match benders. Everyone else was mook/grunt level with no real need to become stronger.
Oh and Tarlokk was straight up gangata with that shit he pulled.

Mako's bending is kinda bullshit though. Screw that lightning. It was better when I thought Him and Bolin had equal skill. Kiss the Avatar a few times and now you're able to stand with the big boys despite that lightning gangster being far more powerful? wtf is this crap?
Disagree with a lot of this. How does Korra seem weak? Didn't she fuck up like 5 guys at once this episode? And her fight with Tarlok was pretty goddamn amazing in season 1. And Mako was shown to have lightning since like, episode 2? Lightning isn't a big deal anymore, everyone that woked with him in that factory was able to use it.

I think part of it is another complaint I have about this season. Introducing enemies that (so far) can only be dealt with one way. The spirits just seems to shake off any bending like it's nothing and the only thing they are effected by is the water hypnosis thing. Not exciting to watch imo.

Its just weird how Mako is praised for being a top firebender when he'd usually be considered average. I just have the feeling he has no business running around with all these masters as if he's relevant. Korra is weak for an avatar. Her attacks seem quite toned down even in avatar state compared to the stuff we used to see come out. Granted I'm using Aang as a guideline and he was one of the most OP of them all. As I said before she had the technical skill but doesn't seem to display the raw power despite her personality leaning towards overkill. Korra just seems to feel highly subdued compared to fighters of the previous era.

And continuity-wise, it's inconsistent that Korra can pop the Avatar state like candy.

Consider that Aang's state for the first half of TLA (up until end of season 2) was only active in times of great need. Only until the episode "The Guru" Aang had to unlock all the chakras, the hardest one being letting go of his earthly attachments, that being his affection for Katara. Korra has not done anything of the sort (wtf using avatar state for air bubble racing) I hope a growth in Korra's spirituality and character makes her more focused and powerful. I mean look at what Kyoshi was able to do, break off an entire landmass to make Kyoshi Island. Korra had a great need in S1 losing all her bending except for air, and it was that humility that finally unlocked her avatar state to energy bend. But I digress. She reverted back to her old personality and didn't grow as a person in the 6 month time jump yet still avatar states at will =/

I'd like to think Korra's age + further progression in her element training helps her pop the Avatar State at will after she achieved it the first time due to the whole..circumstances and all.

TBH I think she's your typical teenage girl, lol. I can only imagine what Aang would have been like as a teen had he not gone through what he did when he was 12.

GREAT episode IMO. Solved some issues from last week.

    Spoiler: show
Oh god that picture of Aang, Katara, and the kids when they were younger WAS THE BEST <3 <3.. and a happy family. While I think Tenzin did get "special" attention, I definitely don't think Aang loved him any more than Kya and Bumi.

But yeah, good episode.. and holy shit did I laugh some too.

This episode had my sides hurting. So many lols. Especially Eska at the end!

    Also, that family photo.

    Spoiler: show
the Mrs and I got excited when Korra mentioned the united republic or whatever becoming involved. We'll get to see Iroh again I'm sure! Possibly the fire nation, and I won't hold my breath, but maybe Zuko too!! Seeing Lin again would also be great!

Tenzin/Ikki and everything involving Varyk were the best parts of the episode. Bumi/Aang's statue scene and the family photo hit me right in the feels.

Korra's killin' me though. At least she finally used the Avatar state for something besides winning a race. Avatar-hood is wasted on her.

Episode 4 was much better as far as Korra went I felt. She was much less 'annoying teenager' this episode. And yeah, everything to do with Tenzin and family has been great.

And crazy water-bending girlfriend at the very end of the episode was hilarious

Is it just me or the animation quality this season is not as good as previous.

Civil Wars 2 was much more enjoyable and less cringe-worthy all around than the past few. The humor was amazing and the family stuff was great.

The only thing that was stupid was
    Spoiler: show
how fucking predictable the villian is I mean COME ON. The whole trial I was like "It's a setup, the judge is being told what to say by Evil Uncle". And lo and behold... Not to mention no one really pointing out the fact that as the Head of the Southern Water Tribe, Korra's father HAS to host meetings at his house, so I don't know why that implicitly makes him guilty of conspiring.

Obviously, he was arrested and put on the ship to be rescued as the Uncle's excuse to actually start a war with the south. Evil Uncle knew Korra would go save her father, which is why there was hardly any resistance put up against her from that entire fucking fleet of ships. "My prisoner, decided by trial, was busted out by the Avatar because of her familial ties to him, and now they're both criminals" sounds like a really good way to turn the North, and maybe even the world, against Korra and the Southern Water Tribe.

Oh and of course it was also obvious that Evil Uncle set up Korra's father to get kicked out of the North. That was also extremely obvious. Man, I was hoping for something a little more, I don't know, sophisticated in terms of plot, but nope.

Although, I have a theory about where this may be going...
    Spoiler: show
What was great in the first season of Korra is that Amon was a wonderful villian; you didn't know what was up with him, who he really was or what kind of power he truly had until the very end. Tarloc was the obviously smarmy villian while Amon was the truly threatening one, and in the end Tarloc redempted himself by helping Korra beat Amon.

Here, I wonder if the truly threatening villians are the spirits, and obviously smarmy Evil Uncle will redempt himself in the end by helping Korra defeat them despite all he did to her and her family.

I personally loved the names she gave them all, LOL. That was so good!

As far as the predictableness goes.. yeah, that stinks, but certainly not taking way what a great episode #4 was for sure. The bits that were supposed to be funny were fucking hysterical (Dat Platypus-Bear costume with the assistant down at the ass, though!) and the water-bending girlfriend at the end.. so freaking good.
