Catastrophe :/
Spoiler: show
Before some idiot brings it up, emergency at a modern nuclear plant = temporary shutdown, not boom.
Ongoing runs on convienence stores (Lawsons, 7-11, etc.) precipitating expected shortages of food and supplies, long lines of course.
MSNBC, others reporting that the first waves are expected to make contact with the Pacific Coast around 10 AM Eastern.
Sendai Airport to remain closed for the foreseeable future; due to flooding and concerns about potential damage to the runway and substrate.
From what I understand of nuclear power plants (which isn't that much I concede) they can't detonate like a nuclear bomb would. Apparently it's impossible due to the way they differ in achieving their reaction/results. Just thought that might ease some minds since a lot of people seem to think the plants can detonate if shit fails hard enough. Keep in mind though it can still meltdown, and that still sucks plenty bad. XD
*Not a nuclear physicist so I may be wrong! Just repeating what I read on articles/wiki. Also, cue Woozie and the entire LHC thread.
Just heard on sky, they are trying to get more info because a nuclear plant in JP is reported on fire.
It's not; it's an oil refinery in Ichihara. The nuclear powerplants mentioned previously are all shutdown; however at Fukushima No. 1 there was an emergency regarding the emergency diesel engines being inoperable (to move coolant). No reports of any leakages, but this isnt current (atleast across the 4 streams i'm monitoring).
Entire West Coast is now a risk zone, according to BBC quote from elsewhere O_o
I hope so too but he specifically said nuclear. I'll post up if I get info.

Sky news: Hookoo[phonetic pronunciation] power plant, fire is separate from reactor, in a building, NE japan. Fire is local not radio active related because it is not in the nuclear part of the plant.
The oil refinery is called Chiba Refinery.
Tokyo Electric Power Company reporting a fire at Fukushima No. 1 apparently.
Update: Damage unknown, it seems that responders are having difficulty reaching the basement where the fire/smoke is eminating from.
Update 2: Fire put out, no radioactive leak risk. Reactors will not be usable due to the earthquake (damage elsewhere in the infrastructure?).
I'm a geography retard, so forgive me I had to wiki it:

Is that 2nd square, with the large red area, Canada? I'm a little confused by the way they sliced the map up
Alaska.
Are you talking about Alaska?
I think I'm going to hell.
I can't help but picture every picture in this thread with Fox News SENATORS COULD REMAIN IN HIDING FOR WEEKS at the bottom.
