I wonder how they feel about the official forums now? After seeing some of the utterly retarded crap posted in this thread, it doesn't surprise me they didn't have one for so long.

To be fair, something like this hasn't happened to them in over 8 years. I dunno how many other MMO companies have their servers backed up in a different country just in the event something happens.

It isn't a case of having them backed up elsewhere, it is a case of having them distributed in the first place. Every other major MMOG does that. Most games have USeast/USWest/EU/Asia datacenters, and the players from those regions can play on servers near them instead of servers in Japan.

people are whining about it like a teen whos been grounded from the phone, though. its been a nice long while since ive heard bitching about the servers being located in japan - for latency reasons, now its because japan got a freak act of god. you just cant blame SE for the shifting of the earth. its not their doing. its because japan has so many tall buil... uh, i mean the plates hate japan.

I've trolled the fuck out of most of GD at some point. The only times I got posts edited were when I slipped up and called people shitheads I think. Even then my Mod Email had a little "Thanks for trying to clarify this stuff, we just have to edit out the 'shithead' part and you're good" note attached. I have a feeling the GMs are banging their heads against the wall even harder than we are.

Yes, but the reason for localization of servers with most other MMOs is the fact that EST servers are on the east coast. PST servers are on the west coast. EU servers are in Europe. Etc. They're (SE) not going to have twelve servers in Cali and twelve servers in Japan if they want to keep the servers integrated. Not only will people figure out which servers are where and gravitate toward the one that's closer, but it makes no sense to have servers which all generally go up and down at the same time for maintenance purposes in two different parts of the world.

And if you think that having a dozen servers in California is going to stop the bitching from the JP servers going down ... you're delusional. The people on JP servers regardless of where they are in the world would be pissed. "Why is my server down? QQQQQQQQQQQQQQ whine cry bitch etc."

People seriously should be glad they're just down and that they didn't get destroyed. I can't even imagine the QQs if all of the server data was lost and characters are just gone forever.

This is correct. It's extremely costly and time consuming to back up a server farm as large as the ffxi database. Even if they had backup servers in place around the globe, we'd likely be "Rolled back" something like 1-2 weeks by using the backup data stored on them.
