They get credit for the design because they designed it and work on it from, literally, start to finish. There's more to architecture than just holding up a roof. Typically, the architect is the leader and mediator of an entire team of consultants including, but not limited to, structural engineers, civil engineers, landscape architects, HVAC engineers, hardware consultants, security consultants, among others in context to the project. On top of this, they also act as the intermediary between the client and the construction team after the construction documents have been finalized and have gone through the bidding process (which the architect also handles). It is also the architect's duty to monitor the construction to make sure the contractors are making progress and not fucking up and make adjustments to the design due to unforeseen circumstances. They additionally must review and sign off on every single fucking product that goes into the creation of the building from the gaskets in roof penetrations down to the frigging sand used to mix the concrete and everything in between. Structural engineers are very important, but their involvement in the design and creation of the building is just a small part of the process in comparison to what an architect contributes.
tl;dr There's a reason why structural engineers work for architects and not the other way around.

Stairs of Continuity ?
And then they have the downward ramps on the way towards the end with all the pictures, stories, and small articles of belongings. Its rather impressive. Along with seeing the actual camps, then the bombed out areas of Dresden, it was a rather dramatic site to behold.
