thanks for the information, I'm learning a lot. was planning on having someone put the computer together for me, because my experience with computers is limited to changing the graphics/sound cards and adding RAM. I'm going to try and put together a list of shit from newegg though, and after that I'll decide which route I want to go.

and I've amended my previous stance; CPU, video card, and PSU are the three things I want to splurge on.

honestly you can probably build it all yourself np. If you can change a gfx card and ram, you can do the rest.

Put mb in case, but cpu in mb, attach cooler to cpu socket, put ram in, put gfx card in, attach the annoying led/power cables from case to mb, put in the hd and dvd drive, put power supply in case and plug in.
    ta-da.

only thing I can think of really that you can "mess up" is plugging usb cables into the mother board backwards if they aren't keyed.

Plus once you do it once, you'll always be able to do it. hasn't really changed since i put together my first 486, heh

If you can read directions and use a screwdriver, you can put a PC together these days. Paying for someone else to do the labor is silly, given the rates most boutique builders charge.

My most recent build took probably ~3 hours, and of that, 2 was spent fussing to get cables and airflow the best I could make them. Probably didn't take more than ~45 mins to get everything in and hooked up.

My thoughts on splurging go like this:
    1) At least a bill on a PSU. More if you're looking at 700W+. It's not so much a splurge as insurance. Most 80+ Gold units are build to very high standards, and are worth what they cost. When in doubt, check jonnyGURU, they've got more PSU reviews (that are good!) than anyone.
    2) GPU. The difference between a $100-150 "mainstream" card and $250 "enthusiast" card, especially with a 20"+ monitor (esp. 24"+) is tremendous.
    ...
?) CPU. So at this juncture, for most people "top of the line" is unnecessary. Unfortunately, AMD is right out as soon as you start talking "top of the line". And splurging on more than an i5-2500K is a waste for most gamers (except those who do 3d rendering).
?+1) Case. It's got all your crap in it. You'll want something that looks nice, has good airflow, and has good features. It's less of a concern than CPU, but, within reason, you get what you pay for. Spending $500 on some ridiculous airbrushed full tower is stupid. Spending $140-180 on a well-engineered mid/full tower is not so stupid, if you have room in the budget.

Don't forget to take proper ESD(Electro Static Discharge) precautions. There are several ways to ground yourself. An ESD wrist-strap or touching your PSU that is plugged into a grounded socket are some common techniques.

still considering both options. so far I'm coming up with ~$1000 at the least, and that's more than I want to spend at the moment. this is what I would get if I were to build it myself:

    ------------

case - $35 at newegg - NZXT Gamma Gaming Case (cheap but it has gotten some really good reviews)

    cpu - $225 at newegg - intel i5 2500k

cooler - $40 at newegg - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus

    memory - $53 at newegg - corsair xms3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-pin DDR3 SDRAM 1600

    graphics card - $240 at newegg - Palit NE5X56T01102-1140F GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready

PSU - $110 at newegg - CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V v2.2 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

    hard drive - $65 at newegg - SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

    optical drive - $34 at newegg - PLEXTOR 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache Internal DVD Super Multi

    OS - $100 at newegg - windows 7

motherboard - ??? no idea what to get here... I don't feel like splurging on the motherboard is necessary. there were some GIGABYTE models in the $125-$150 range that I would probably end up getting.

    -------------

still outside my price range, sadly. beginning to think it's impossible to build even a cheap gaming rig under $1k. not sure what, if anything, I can cut back on in that list. maybe I'll just return the shitty best buy computer, use my horrifically ancient PC for basic web surfing in the meantime, and save up for something a little nicer.

also seriously considering downloading and burning Windows 7, that'd save $100 right there. not sure if that's a good idea and I haven't had the time to look into it yet.

this is another thing I'm terrified of... though I have done both the graphics card and sound card, and some RAM too, and have never fried anything. I forget what I did, I think I touched the metal case before installing anything or something like that. it's been a long time.

Only quoting this one, but also going to comment on the above post as well.

First, it's not something to be terrified of. If you've got a tile/wood floored room and you don't wear anything that's a static magnet (e.g. fleece), you can ground yourself on a doorknob or the hinges/screws of a door. You won't generate enough static walking between there and a work table to build up a significant charge. If you're extra paranoid, plug your PSU in and touch its case.

For the above post... Corsair TX-750 is good, but it is oooooooold. Also, 750W is hella overkill for 1 GPU. You should be looking at like 550-600W.

    Food for thoughtnoms:

Probably a few things. Baseline i3 is about half the cost of the i5 - certainly a downgrade, but still serviceable (wouldn't be my first pick of things to cut though).

Video card, again while nice, is well above what you need for a solid basic build. A 460 or Radeon 6850 are around $100 less after rebates and will still do rather well - can always drop a second one in later if it's not cutting it. Something to consider there is monitor size - it takes a lot less card to turn all the bells and whistles on at 1280x1024 than it does at 2560x1600. You can also play decades worth of PC titles perfectly well on a Radeon 5770 or the like too.

While, again, PSU is important, I do think you can get something reliable for a fair bit less, probably in the $60-80 range - though it may mean dropping to a 650W or good 500W unit rather than a 750W. 500W is fine for most single card setups - certainly for things within your budget.

Keep in mind that you're not building a budget rig with some of those parts - you're getting squarely into midrange/prime bang for the buck territory. A CPU/GPU combination costing half of what you spec'ed will still be better than basically anything at Best Buy remotely in your price range, and will be more readily upgradeable to boot.

also seriously considering downloading and burning Windows 7, that'd save $100 right there. not sure if that's a good idea and I haven't had the time to look into it yet
If you have the possibility of a student discount, you could look at that too. Might save a few bucks, or get a better version for about the same price (it's $71 for Pro, $91 for Ultimate for students here, for example).

Otherwise, personally I think it's better to buy Windows. Frankly, if you can afford to pay $1k (or $900, or whatever) for hardware, $100 more for the software to tie it all together and make it do what you want isn't outlandish. It's a couple full price games, for software that you'll utilize basically any time you touch the computer for years to come. It's a pain in the ass to account for in a build budget, but it's more than fair. You also don't need to worry about anti-piracy measures MS might come up with n' so on.

Budget gaming rig = AMD. Your going 1 GPU so 600/650W PSU is more than plenty. Budget also means cheaper, yet still good case and PSUs that get the job done and are reliable. The OCZ is half modular and I dropped 8 in peoples rigs since last christmas. The Corsair is also good and thrown in for Ama to cry about people not picking PSUs that cost the same as their CPU.

$665 and get some thermal paste.

Why the hellfuck do people keep suggesting that OCZ PSU? It's a complete piece of shit.

I'll just leave this here: http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/articl...o_power_supply

Going AMD for a budget rig does make a lot of sense. Will cut a decent amount off the price. I have a hard time recommending AMD due to their pathetic inability to compete past about the $125-150 mark (which is not as low as I'm looking... but my budget supported the $180 my i5-2500K was at Microcenter), but if you want a gaming rig and only have about $500 to spend, a Phenom II is not a bad option.

Hey, if people want to pony up $600 on a PC, then toast a CPU, a mobo, some RAM, and/or a GPU because they cheaped out on the single most important component, that's not my place to judge.

But by the same token, I could never recommend that someone waste their money on some crap group-regulated unit that can't even hit its rated power without blowing up (protip: a good PSU should shut itself down before committing suicide if you ask more of it than it can give... just sayin').

    Because when you originally aiming for a $500 prebuilt from BB (no offense to OP);

you dont get a $150 psu when your dell lasted 15 years

    you dont sli/crossfire

you dont extract the maximum overclock

you dont push the rating anywhere near its limits

you need a psu that turns on, runs the internet, torrent, and your fav game just fine.

    Spoiler: show
the 600W goes on sale all the time for $40 after rebate

So don't spend $150. Lazer Gold I linked is $110.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151096 There's a 620W Seasonic that's under $90 (before shipping). It's the same guts as the Corsair HX-620 (which I didn't see active still). Solid 80+ Bronze modular unit.

The Corsair TX650 you linked is another good unit. One that won't blow itself up.

thanks you guys. you are awesome. that gives me a lot more to work with, I can see now how I was aiming too high for what I really need. probably gonna go a lot more budget - but still not horribly cheap - leaving room to upgrade in the future.

I'll be back, once I've gone through the choices and come up with a final build.

LGA-1155 has a funky latch. Just make sure you line up the CPU correctly, and it'll be fine.

I'll admit I kinda went "wut?" when I saw mine, but it's actually not that bad, and does clamp down very securely.
