One thing to perhaps consider is that the NMs with two entries in the DATs might actually be two distinct NMs. It may be difficult to observe this unless you attempt to hold one and pop the other.

I've heard of two NMs being up at the same time.

I can't tell if that's sarcasm or seriousness. It wouldn't be incredibly hard to test with two characters, but getting a negative result is always frustrating and difficult. Like, we have no real way to know how many PH kills it would take the "prove" that two NMs CAN'T be up at once.

Unless I'm missing something, most cases of "the NM has two PHs and there are two copies of it" also involve only one of the two PH copies (or a copy of the NM) being up at once. How would we spawn a second copy without a PH? Does anyone have an example NM?

Take that comment with skepticism. I read it off a wiki page.

Is it not every 30 mins with a -5 offset (ie 25, 55, 85, etc)? Or am i thinking of something else?

    Typical Lottery NM:
When the Placeholder is killed, the Notorious Monster spawns with a certain probability at the time when the Placeholder would normally respawn. It's unproven at this time, but it seems the probability of PH replacing is 0 for most "Typical Lottery NMs" for a certain period of time after they are killed, and then increases to a flat rate after the "dead time." So, after being killed, a 1-hour Typical Lottery NM has one hour of inactivity followed by that Notorious Monster's typical replacement rate.

The odds of a Notorious Monster replacing a placeholder seem to be proportional to the Placeholder repop time, to an extent. So outdoor NMs (5 minute PH repop time) have a lower probability of replacing their Placeholder than indoor NMs (~16 minute PH repop time). Just offhand, I'd say the probability is approximately 10% for outside and 30% for inside. So on average you kill the PH about 10 times (~an hour after window opens) outside and ~3-4 times (~an hour after window opens) for inside.

It is my experience that the vast majority of "Lottery NMs" work this way, or off some simple variant of this.

In technical terms, this would be:
When the Notorious Monster is spawned, the only monster you're required to kill to make him spawn again (the placeholder) is seen at 0% HP on AP Radar.

    Common Variant: Multiple Placeholders
Some Notorious Monsters (really quite a few of them) actually depend on the death of multiple monsters that have different IDs in the .dats.

A common example that most people are familiar with is Megalobugard. If you look at Megalobugard's spawn pattern in the .dats, you'll see that the "2, 3, 2, 1, 2" pattern people quote so often is actually entirely incorrect. Based on the .dats, the group sizes are "3, 4, 2, 3, 2", with Megalobugard appearing in the list below the second group of 3. The Wide Scan experience in game ("2, 3, 2, 1, 2") is the pattern with placeholders removed. True to FFXI lore, however, Megalobugard's PH is the "bottom of whichever group has an extra one." It turns out that there are four possible PHs in the .dats, one in each of the first two groups and two in the fourth group.

(Un?)Common Variant: Placeholder continues spawning with NM
Some Notorious Monsters (not very many, I think) have placeholders that continue to spawn even when the Notorious Monster is up. Not killing anything obviously doesn't pop these monsters, and everything you kill always respawns.

A good, simple example of this is Worr the Clawfisted. There are four Sahagins in the .dats for his room. Two Marsh, 1 Bog, and 1 Swamp. One Marsh and the Bog/Swamp Sahagins are all mutually exclusive (a set of three where only one can spawn), while the second Marsh Sahagin spawns all the time. Worr is a Lottery spawn of the Marsh Sahagin that does not share his pop spot, but he doesn't synchronize his spawn time with the Marsh Sahagin and the Marsh Sahagin continues to spawn as normal and on schedule. So far I have observed 13 and 15 minute spawn times from PH (16 minute) ToD.
This is good information, and very accurate.

The last bit though, " (Un?)Common Variant: Placeholder continues spawning with NM," where an NM can spawn even if the PH is up, was SE's first attempt at beating RMT afkbots from camping NM's.

The sahagin NM's all used to drop Angel Skin, and so SSG used to be a popular claimbot spot. And it used to be that claimbots could claim before the mob spawned, this was before the "claim delay" that people who do kings know all too well about. It used to be that the bot was set on an algorithm to monitor packets every 16minutes and inject claim commands into the outgoing packets to claim the NM before it spawned.

Another example of a more well-known case is Mee Deggi and Quu Domi. These NM's now function where they can spawn anytime(?) that the PH is dead. If the PH is alive then it wont spawn. Whether the NM actually can spawn in miniwindows (every 4 minutes since PH death til PH repop or every 3 minutes...) I haven't determined but I like to keep this idea in mind when waiting for NM pop.

On a side note: Leaping lizzy doesn't function like ishtar, but Stray Mary does indeed.

I lost my Toraimarai Canal PHs because I forgot to update the wiki when I found them. They were both either the top or the bottom Mousse/Leech respectively in the rooms, so I've ?'d them. The monsters in Inner Horutoto Ruins have moved around, but they probably didn't alter the PH structures of NMs there. Regardless, treat the NMs there as suspicious. Here is the new PH list:

Black Triple Stars is 2 NMs and 2 different sets of bats as viable PH. When I camped it I had Bats A1-A5 (or 6?) and Black Triple Stars A, then Bats B1-B5 and Black Triple Stars B. Only 6 kills under my belt, but that was my observation then.

Yeah, I marked Black Triple Stars PHs on the list above. In practice, I'm not sure there's any difference between having two NMs in the .dats and having one. If anyone can differentiate between the two, I'd love to know what the difference is.

I couldn't figure out Magnotaur's PH. I know, try and contain your grief. Other than that, Toraimarai Canal and Ule Range are done.

Anyway i can contribute to this list? how do you get the mob id's?

Lizzy can spawn below or above the tower on the hill, for instance.
I've seen LL spawn in pretty much every location. At least 6 distinct spawn locations going just from my memory. I've also seen it spawn back to back, although I wasn't fiddling with memory/dats back in those days.

I registered specifically for this thread. Nice to meet y'all.

Back in Ifrit, I killed Stray Mary 103 (yes, one hundred and three times), yielding 15 horns, at 250k each (at the time). So, I discovered many things about her. Here we go.

First of all, the NM in question has a ~15% drop rate, with no TH of any kind. (Always killed on NIN/BRD for running faster)

Second, as some poster said, sometimes the PH won't respawn within five minutes, sometimes it doubles. Reason as to why this happens is unknown to me.

Third, Stray Mary's PH can pop either in the N camp or the S camp. You have to juggle around, the split isn't 50/50. The NM itself isn't 50/50 either.

Fourth, I could pop her 3 times in 20 mins on one occassion, so she classifies as a pure lottery pop, with no minimum respawn timer.

Fifth, the Dhalmel in Tahrongi is the exact same NM model. Since Canyon, Highlands and Plateau are analogous zones, there's probably a NM sharing this same mechanic on La'Thiene (haven't checked)

To actually add to this discussion, I would like to share that there are, indeed, two kinds of lottery pops. Lottos with minimum respawn timers (I could never, ever get Valk. Emperor to repop within less than an hour. Ever), and unrestricted lottos (Stray Mary, Leaping Lizzy, Sheropopard Ishtar, etc.)

What puzzles me is, if you kill VE, and wait four hours to try and repop (assuming no one killed it within that timeframe), it appears the chance for it to pop increases dramatically. Try to go pop some obscure lottery NM's, you'll se that you can 'em pop pretty fast. (Hellion, maybe even Ungur)

So, my vision is that some lotto NM's have an increasing % in pop rate by time, added to the base possibility of it popping in virtue of the PH kill.

Another NM that is suspected to have a PH, but won't pop exactly when it's due, are the two yagudos in Oztroja. I suspect they were patched sometime to be a true timed spawn though, but everyone that has camped 'em (with their PoS drop rate) can agree with me that they seem to pop if no one's been there for a while, and you train and kill every mob in the room.

So many things I'd like to add, please tell me on how I can help. I love killing NM's for fun, gil and the (very) odd good items they drop. I wouldn't mind helping you guys out.

Also sorry, English ain't my first language.

I personally put it on pause because SE went around updating dungeons and says they're going to update more. If anyone finds PHs they want me to add though, I'm happy to do it.

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned that Stray Mary PH sometimes doubled in repop time. I was "camping" JeJ while leveling some low levels and it's PH doubled as well, popping exactly 10 minutes after death as opposed to 5 minutes(the time matching up with the 30 second pop timer based on the zone).

Byrthnoth was right, dungeons were changed up a bit and because of it some of the PH's were changed, such as the PH's for hotpot are now wrong. it changes a mob name that's in the basement with serket.
so got the new ones, as well as the toad in West Sarutabaruta (S)
dunno if this still has any interest at all though, thought id give it a necro at least to see. hope i did this right
