My Mom Needs a Hobby

Need some suggestions. My mom turned 65 and retired last year. Now she's bored. I wanted to suggest to her a new hobby or job that she can try out.

Here's some background info on her:

Hobby - Currently her hobby consists of playing mahjongg or visiting one of the many nearby Indian casinos with her fellow gambling degenerates. When I was young, she used to read a lot of those trashy romance novels. She has zero knowledge of computers and electronics.

(Disclosure: The gambling thing is the main reason why I want to keep her busy. She always played mahjongg, bingo and shit when I was growing up. I am afraid it may become worse now that she has nothing better to do.)

Job - She retired from working in a factory as a machine operator. She said she is interested in finding another job but she probably would have to find an entry level unskilled job. She's actually got a really good memory. I can give her a phone number and she remembers it without writing it down. She can even recall it days later.

Other - She's stubborn as hell (old dog with tricks kind of stubborn.) Took me forever to get her to use a cell phone. I basically gave her my phone and account so that she would agree to it. Of course now she's all for having a cell phone but convincing her to try in the first place is the most difficult part.

She's Filippino who immigrated like 40 years ago. In the Philippines she graduated college and worked as a school teacher before she met my dad. But in the US, she only worked factory-type jobs.

That's all I could brainstorm for now.

If she is only using the ipad for books then I would recommend a kindle instead. They are awesome and super simple to use and feel more like a book than the ipad. If you think she will use the ipad for other stuff then the ipad might be nice.

Photography, painting, pottery, something art related are really good hobbies to get into that might pay off in the end but are still time consuming and fun even if they don't. It also opens it up for her to take classes on whatever art she chooses at the local college/community college/learning annex.

I know my grandmother spends most of her time reading and doing sudoku and my father couldn't retire and just got a part time easy job. My aunt started painting and now is selling her paintings and is quite successful with her art.

Painting and a Kindle are both good ideas. Taking a college class is a great idea.

There's also bird watching, home beer or wine making, gardening- vegs or flowers, one of my mother's friends is into beekeeping and raising chickens, she ever go fishing?, learn an instrument, knitting, researching the family tree, book club or any club really.

If you don't want her doing that kinda stuff, you have to get her away from the people who do, keep her from falling in with a bad crowd. (Congratulations, you are now your parents.)
If it weren't for the anti-tech bent, getting her hooked on an MMO would likely be your best bet, but, alas.
Also nerdy as hell, but maybe try shifting her from mahjong to Magic: the Gathering? It does have a tournament or FLGS social scene.

Aru mentioned beekeeping, and I know someone that's started that recently. It looks really interesting, and it's recommended that new beekeepers get in touch with any local beekeeping groups for support, so that may help. But unless you manage a half dozen hives, it doesn't really eat up that much free time, since you should really only pester the bees once a week or so. Also, hives and frames can get heavy once packed with honey, like, 60 pounds for a singe medium hive box.
