Letter from the Producer, XVII (09/01/2011)

Hello everyone! Yoshi-P here with another post for all you FFXIV-ers. Hot one day, cold the next. The weather’s been getting kinda funky on the cusp of the seasons here. Hope you’re all managing to stay in good health while enjoying your time in Eorzea.

We’re firing on all cylinders heading into the next patch, and there’s been some late nights and weekends spent here at the office. The encouragement we’ve been receiving on the forums has us doing everything we can to get things done.

Lemme start things off with a screenshot of one of the new airships taking to the skies come 1.19.

Looks like that one’s about to whisk some players off into the Gridanian twilight. Nice.

Sorry for the long wait, but they’re finally coming to Eorzea in 1.19, together with chocobo mounts, to help make traveling around the realm more enjoyable. Ride a “horsebird” to get wherever you need to go by land, or book passage on an airship to fly the quickest routes between Ul’dah, Gridania, and Limsa. Airship voyages themselves will take only mere seconds, though there will be sweet little cutscenes accompanying departures and arrivals.


Aaand now on to the update list. Changes coming in 1.19 have been detailed on the Lodestone in some Topics and forum posts, so as I mentioned last letter, this is just a list of changes slated for 1.20 and beyond. There’s a couple healthy-sized ones among them, so I’m looking to update the list again with a more detailed breakdown of those sometime after 1.19 goes live. Without further ado...

Happy to see we finally get our very own Horse Bird! I don't think we will actually be able to walk around in the airship, just get the intro/outro cutscene. Was hoping maybe a 1 or 2 minute travel in between for the wonderful scenery. Seems the release for the job system is going to get released until 1.21 at the earliest if there are no hiccups, which may mean sometime around the holidays or maybe a little sooner?

That's what I got from it taking 'seconds'. I guess its convenient for fast travelling but it would have been nice to see the scenery if it worked like the ferry for sure

Jobs have been coming in 1.21 since June. No surprises in that letter.

Seems that 1.20 focus is action rehaul and 1.21 is jobs. Makes me wonder when the patches are coming, since both have been worked on for a long time.

Huh? He had been promising jobs in 1.20 for a while.

Would be cool to get both out by the end of the year. They'll probably balance the raids for 3 months again tho....

So what exactly is happening when "Jobs" get released or is it known? Are there going to be new jobs or are they renaming the current classes into traditional FF job names?

The job will be a specialized role you take on based on your current class. The theory is that you will lose a wide range of cross-class abilities in exchange for becoming highly specialized in the job itself. You'll be able to choose at any time if you are in the job role or the class role. Devs have said they want jobs to be for party play and classes to be for solo play.

From my understanding the new jobs will be equivalent to advanced classes as in XI. I'll give the game a shot again with 1.21

Yoshi said Ishgard is far away and only after the world receives its "big changes".

I hope they at least let us board the airship before it takes off. I hate how currently for the boat you're forced to stand on the dock and can't run inside once it has arrived.

Will be lame if, to board an airship, you just run to market wards and there is a new menu option.
