Either would be fine additions, seeing as both are pretty large among the fan base, shit even Vinyll Scratch would be a neat addition/side character to have in season 2.

According to Faust's deviant page she did say if they ever give Ditzy Doo (The pony Rainbow dash mentions in Winter Wrap Up) they might consider giving her Derpy's design. I also heard Derpy will be intentionally added as a "Where's Waldo" type of challenge, but can't find an official source.

Either way it's hard telling. A ton of the background characters are extremely popular now.
