You're supposed to make a duplicate of whatever your best item is before trying to go for the next socket. That way you have a backup when things inevitably blow up. It's still going to make people rage, though it'll be because they can't afford and/or locate the necessary amount of gear and materia to work their way up to a HQ item with five sockets of R4 materia.

Anybody notice a difference in the spiritbind rates between optimal/favored gear vs. non-optimal/non-favored? Wondering if I can just buy up the cheapest crap regardless of what it is.

Not sure if this has been said yet, but the EXP you get from completed quests doesn't go towards your materia at all. Completed one of the main quests and got 19k exp, none of the bars budged an inch.

Yeah, it doesn't appear that leve EXP rewards count towards Spiritbond either. I just pushed halfway through 43 and they moved like 1 pixel each, which is most likely from the mobs I actually killed.

By the time you work your way up to that the original item will no longer be the best so you'll have to start over on a new item. Materia seems to take a while to produce so to get five sockets of T4 on an item in any reasonable amount of time is going to mean buying lots of it. I can afford to do that but I can't decide if it's worth it. SE is on to something good with this, rich players will be spending big and redistributing their gil back into the economy in return for high risk powerful items that will be trash a few months later when new gear is added. I'll most likely stop at 3 sockets.

Did they explain what piety does for melee now, if anything? Just noticed it is one of my higher stats on lancer, and I am seeing it on a lot of melee gear and weapons. I know adding pie adds to MP now, is that it then?

I got about 75% spiritbond on all my gear clearing up to the Ogre in Darkhold on my LV45 Thaum. Trash mobs giving from 500-800 exp depending on chain.

So does it seem like a set amount of EXP? Or how many mobs you kill? I haven't paid much attention since I was doing dungeon raids all day.

I'm pretty certain it's kill/gather/craft EXP > Spiritbond. Thus, no spirit bond from quest/leve EXP etc.

I can confirm optimal rank/class does affect spiritbonding.

Using an optimal rank Leatherworking tool with armor that was a combination of Optimal Rank only and Optimal Class and Rank, I did about 14 leatherworking leves. Before starting, all my crafting gear had zero bond.

By the end of the session, my LW tool was at about 30-40% bond, armor that was optimal class and Rank were at about 25% while armor that was optimal rank only was at about 10-15% bond.
