I love the attention to detail. I don't know if people got a good enough look from released previews, but the internal cockpits of each mech are different, with working (but in gameplay terms, useless) readouts in varying positions.

I'm also glad the devs removed the "coming summer 2012" stuff and changed it to just "TBD" ... quality over release dates is a good thing.

Just got a beta invite a few days ago. Learning curve was steep but I think I have the basics down and I'm really enjoying the game. Entering matches lone wolf and attempting to coordinate via typing is getting old though.

Most people don't bother typing ... for multiple reasons ... not much time pre-match, grouping/command still being implemented, and typing in the heat of battle blows. Being a good Lone Wolf requires you to just observe others and try to anticipate tactical decisions other than maybe a little chatter as the match begins. In the end though, as a Lone Wolf, you're likely on a team of all Lone Wolfs .. so in the end, it just comes down to some luck and hoping you got good teammates. Otherwise, get on voice chat and group with real friends for now.

Not to give the usual "It's Beta" response, but it is ... the complete lack of out of game chat will be the biggest detriment to good teaming ... but thats still coming.

State of the Game post from a Dev on Beta forums

    Hey MechWarrior Fans,

I know recently there has been a huge amount of conversation and speculation on where the product currently stands. Including speculation on certain features, certain mech's, when were going open beta and are we going to be ready.

Let's start with where we are today- we're in closed beta. This means only the founders are playing along with an increasing amount of random closed beta applicants. It was recently explained exactly what closed beta means and I think everyone is very understanding and having a great time playing.

I think where things get a little contested is in trying to understand what the game will have at Open Beta or at launch. A recent interview I gave mentioned their being 4 maps and 8 mechs at Open Beta. None of this was really brand new information but it may have caught people off guard. These things also change rapidly, in fact as you know we already have 8 mechs along with their variants and were not in Open Beta yet, in fact Mechs 9 and 10 are both getting very close to game shape and will certainly be in before Open Beta. The next maps are already started which will likely make me a liar on the map count as well. In short Mech's and maps are going to flow at a very constant rate.

When is Open Beta- honestly we're always working towards a date and we have one in mind right now. Does it have us keeping our summer 2012 promise? Frankly no, it would slip into October. With that in mind ,chew on this thought. We brought our first beta testers into Friends and Family just about exactly 4 months ago. Ask those players if they think the game has changed a little bit in those 4 months and I think they would tell you that it is shocking how much it has progressed. So in another couple of months it can certainly improve a significant amount more. But ultimately even this Open Beta date is not set in stone, if it needs a little more time then we will make the best decision for the product, everyone at Piranha and IGP is committed to that.

So what is the basic roadmap? Here is the best I can do for you currently.

    - The next ~couple of months we stay in closed beta. We continue to update the lone wolf experience by finishing off the economy of the game by putting in the remaining play loop features like repair and rearm, pilot skills and modules. We spend some time balancing the economy while every aspect of the game including User Interface, HUD, Networking code as well as 'mech collisions are hardened, optimized, and polished. While including as many 'mechs and maps as we can manage. In summary, polish off the MVP feature set which is described as the "lone wolf" play experience.

    - The product goes into Open Beta - very frequent minor updates continue along with a steady stream of 'mechs and maps. While this is going on a large portion of the team is working on the first major update for the game.

    - About ~3 months after Open Beta we ship the first major update for the game which is Community Warfare or the first iteration of the overarching meta game. This of course is a huge feature which takes the fight across all the factions and the entire inner sphere.

    - After community warfare is introduced into the product we will likely officially "launch" shortly after.

    - A few months after launch the next major update is released which of course is all about the clan invasion.

In summary, all of the best laid plans change in game development. But the game is already extremely fun and I'm sure you are all glad to be playing now and not waiting months longer. Remember, you screamed to get in. So enjoy your time in the game and just be excited knowing that an entire development team is working on nothing but MWO to bring you weekly updates and there is no end in sight for the work or feature updates. You may need to wait a few more months for the meta game but rest assured it is coming. As well as countless other features.

    See you on the battlefield.

    Oh yeah

Your receiving this email because we made a piloting error. You have just recently received an email that was meant to go out to only all our great Closed Beta testers. So we really apologize for making this mistake and hope you will forgive us.

In order to help with that forgiveness, we have decided to grant you beta access as of this email!

Please enjoy the game and help us make an even better product as Closed Beta continues, as after we have fixed our error we are closing the door again.

We look forward to seeing you on the battlefield!

Got an invite even after I pre-ordered. DAMN IT! Waste'o'money. Might be fun once there are new modes and mechs but currently it's very stale after a few play throughs. But it's fun at first.

I was in the first wave of invites. I submitted my hardware, and they actually let me in. I was fucking shocked.
It actually loaded, and went to the main screen, but from there was laggy as hell and couldn't really update.
    I need new hardware.

Sweet, so are any of the people in this thread NOT in beta yet? Seems most people got in or bought Founders status.

Devs made the only correct decision tonight by pushing back Open Beta and listing some other changes. I was one of the many people offended by their orignal Open Beta date of this Tuesday, but it seems they were listening. Full e-mail below for anyone not in beta that's keeping an eye on this.

    Spoiler: show

    MechWarrior Online Update
PGI Response to the major concerns of the community.
We would like to let you all know that we DO listen and DO carefully follow the forums, Facebook, Tweets, PMs and support tickets. We have a team of committed staff whose entire job is to tell us these things.

Game development is similar to trying to steer a very large ship. To make changes in direction takes time and accurate judgement calls. Even after the decision to change direction has been made, it takes a lot of time to make sure the change is working and the direction is valid. A lot of the feedback on the forums specifically are in the pipe for implementation, but again it comes down to time to get them ready and tested before sending it out to you folks on the live servers.

That being said, we’d like to address the concerns and worries that many of you have regarding Open Beta, Match Making, Founder’s Premiums, Game Balance, New User Flow and the future of Community Warfare.

    Open Beta:
We have decided to push Open Beta back. We agree that the game's current state of stability is not allowing us to get the latest experience across to new and veteran players alike. This is a short push back on the date and will depend on the stability and playability of the build.

    Current Gameplay Issue:
The instability (lag to completely dead FPS) has been identified and we will put out a fix tonight. We also want to make sure this fix works on the Live game servers so you will get a new patch very soon.

    Match Making:
The developers at PGI are all veteran game players. Many of us were or still are competitive gamers and truly know the feeling of a great match played between two equally matched teams.

The next 3 stages of planned releases for Match Making involve the following:
    Phase 1:
Reduce the maximum # of players in a group to 4. This means when players form a group, they will only be able to add 3 people. When that group launches, they will be put in a bucket. The match maker will then fill the rest of the 8 player team with 4 PUGs or any partial groups that are looking for a match at that moment. The same will happen for the other team. Matches will still be 8v8 but instead of playing against 8 people in an organized premade, you will see a max of 4.
Now before you light your pitchforks, we know that this does not address all the issues and that 8-player groups are the mainstay of community and organized team-play. This is why we move to Phase 2 VERY soon after Phase 1.
    Phase 2:
Players will be able to convert their 4-player group to an 8-player group similarly to how World of Warcraft’s group to raid conversion works. With a click of a button, a group leader can convert a 4-player group to 8-players and invite 4 more players to the group. There is a limitation to this however. If the group leader decides to convert to an 8-player group, they MUST have 8 players in order to launch. (i.e. you cannot launch a game with 5,6 or 7 players). In addition to that, your 8-player group will be matched to another 8-player group ONLY. This does reduce the change of finding a match quickly but at the same time 8-players teams will finally be matched to other 8-player teams exclusively.
At some future date we will also want to include the ability to challenge a specific 8-player team to a match in a competitive/eSport manner. But as stated, this will be coming at a later date.
    Phase 3
We have been examining the various ranking systems in other games/structured tournament play etc. This includes ELO, TrueSkill and others. Our current plan is to use a hybrid system that uses the mentality of ELO with a weighting system that we’ve determined that drives down to player effectiveness/skill in a match. In order for this to work properly, we will need to do heavy pre-release testing before it goes live to the community and hence the amount of time to get it implemented.

We currently cannot go into detail as to how this system will work because we are not going to over-promise something that may change during implementation. We will try to keep you as up to date on this as possible.
    Founder’s Premium Account Status:
We have heard your cries and we are responding to them…

On the date of Open Beta, your Premium Account timer WILL start ticking. Around Open Beta, a button will appear that will allow YOU the Founder’s account holder to decide when the timer starts to tick down. At the same time as this button appearing, your used Premium Account time will be reset to its full value. At that point, you can click the button to start your timer but you cannot stop it. It will be up to you to decide when the Premium Account starts to tick.

Please note that this only applies to Founder’s Premium Account Bonus. Founder’s Mechs behave as planned from Open Beta onward.

Players who purchase a Premium Account AFTER Open Beta will have their timers start immediately upon purchase.
    Game Balance:
The game is fairly close to where we want it but the last few items are finally coming into play in terms of Mech on-board systems and items such as Double Heat Sinks, Ferro Fibrous Armor which directly relate to weapon balance and combat experience. Now that those systems are in place, we will be looking into balancing factors such as heat and damage/damage over time etc.

For more information about where weapons are going, check out this link.
    New User Experience:
We are adding a lot of tutorials for new players, and we believe this will help greatly. We’re also tightening the UI to make the flow easier to understand. In general, we’re adding a lot in the coming days, and we do understand this is needed to help new players the various complexities of MechWarrior Online.

Videos of every aspect of Mech Warfare will be coming soon, including moving your Mech, arming your Mech and tactics with your Mech.
    Community Warfare:
Let’s start off by re-quoting the original Community Warfare Pillar from our game description:

    Community Warfare:
MechWarrior® in all of its incarnations has always had a loyal following of players in one of the strongest on-line communities in gaming history. Piranha-Games hopes to bring this community together in a friendly conflict of universal control. This may sound a little odd, but it is the fun competitiveness that will keep the game alive and kicking for years to come. Utilizing the BattleTech® Inner Sphere, we plan to have skirmishes amongst the Great Houses in BattleTech® lore. Allowing the player to have an active part in this conflict is one of our key directives in designing this game. Players will be able to create, manage and customize their Merc Corp's player base and appearance, while banding together to really delve into the Inner Sphere conflict where House alignment reigns supreme. Merc Corp leaders will bid and fight for occupation rights to some of the most valuable planets across the Inner Sphere and challenge other Merc Corps for control of planets reaping large rewards.

Nothing has changed from this original vision of where we want to take Community Warfare. The thing about Community Warfare the decision to push it out further post Open Beta, is the sheer size of the feature and the amount of time to implement. Right now we want the dev team to focus on getting the current game feature set into the live build and then stabilize the build as people join us through the first few weeks of Open Beta. Soon after, a large segment of the entire team will shift over to getting Community Warfare coded and implemented so we can get this into the hands of internal/early beta tester’s hands so we can launch the feature in the future. Because of the sheer workload of this feature we cannot give you an accurate timeline for delivery for this but we will start rolling out information as we begin development of Community Warfare.
After this big gameplay injection, we will look at the plan for the Clan Invasion.

We thank you for your patience and we look forward to seeing you on the battlefield!

So, within the BG Community ... what's everyone's opinions on the AH / Yen Lo Wang issue? Just curious.

As for me, I'm on the side of the people worrying about the slippery slope this puts us on. Even if the Mech itself isn't particularly powerful, I fear some combo in the future having an advantage, even if slight. I would like to point out that I will likely never pilot a Centurion, but if this had happened to one of the Catapult variants (since I use them all) .. I'd be upset.

Infinite Game Publishing and Piranha Games have confirmed that the MechWarrior Online Open Beta will kick off on October 29.

Players planning on taking part can reserve their pilot names and get a load more information on the official site.

MWO is a new free-to-play robot battler in development exclusively for PC at Piranha Games, and will use Crytek's CryEngine 3.

The online reboot will be set in the year 3049 during the initial stages of a huge interstellar war and with the enhanced Crytek visuals now powering it, there could be plenty to enjoy here for fans who fondly remember FASA's original series.

This game is still so buggy, I played all night tonight, random D/C's every hour or so, not saving loadouts, having owned mechs disappear and have to relog, its fun still, but I wish it was more polished.

So for a game that had all this talk here on BG and is now effectively live, its gotten hella quiet in here. So whats everyone's status ... especially people who didn't get into closed beta?

I'm personally still having a lot of fun though some missing features are holding this game waaay back I feel (STILL no out of combat chat? That's easily the #1 issue with the game by a mile). But otherwise I just love the FEEL of it ... and for that reason alone I hope this game stays alive for a very long time.
