Is it possible for my PC to kill my router?

    Title.

Basically, after being hooked up to a new router for ~2 days, it suddenly doesn't work anymore. Internet went out at my last residence (different modem and router, same PC) about a week ago also, though I'm not sure they're related.

I can connect directly to the Modem and access the internet just fine, but since I got disconnected last night, the router isn't even detecting a connection to the modem. Other computers in the house are also unable to connect to the router now.

Tried unplugging and replugging stuff. Tried resetting the router altogether (computers in the house can't even detect it still), and I tried 3 different ethernet cables to connect the modem to the router.

    Please halp.

Yah, it's possible, but freaky. It's far more likely your router simply died. Also trouble shoot the cable between the modem and router, make sure it works. You said you can connect from the modem to the computer, so you can use that connection to test the cables. You can try resetting your router as well to base configurations using the 30-30-30 method.

30-30-30 method? Don't try to confuse me with your alien talk.

My apologies. Different routers have different methods of resetting them to factory defaults. But you can cover your bases and reset it, regardless of model by holding the reset button in while it is powered on for 30 seconds, keep holding the button, turn it off for 30 seconds, keep holding the button, turn it on and hold it for 30 seconds. So regardless of your model, the 30-30-30 covers all the reset options (except some really weird ones that you have a like .0001% chance of worrying about).

Did you check the cable between the router and modem?

Yes, tried 3 different cables, at least one of which was brand new.

So I think the thing is just broken...

Apparently, there are a total of 7 LEDs on the front of it. 4 of them are for Ethernet ports (numbered 1-4), then there's a broadcasting LED, an Internet LED, and a power LED. As of now, the 4 port LEDs, and the Internet LED are lit whether it's hooked up to anything or not, but the Power and Broadcasting LEDs are always off...

There is no "On" switch on this thing, just a power cord.

I had a router completely fry recently too.

Really weird when that stuff happens.

I think the circuit board shorted out.

Not that this is relevant in any way to your situation, but your PC can kill your router. You just have to flash faulty firmware onto it. In some cases, you could also change certain settings that would make it unresponsive to all but a hard reset.

That isn't the pc killing the router, that is specifically the user killing it.

The user could just drop it in a bucket of water, too.

I guess this is sort of a "PCs don't kill routers, people kill routers" argument?
