A bit late to answer your question, but I too would love to hear some other people's insights on the Professions. I have played just about everything to about 15 at this point. Only Necro, Ranger and Elementalist got higher. Anyone have any views on Warrior, Guardian or Thief? I really liked Thief, but have seen a lot of threads on the official forums and elsewhere this weekend that were complaining they got nerfed fairly badly.
I myself am in love with Dual Dagger Elementalist. Once you learn how to play it in PvE you can be pretty damn powerful. I played some more Necro this weekend and honestly, I felt like it lost some of what made me fall in love with it during the first test i participated in. There were some weapon/ability tweaks that just notched necro down for me. Before this test it was a neck and neck fight for me for launch main profession, but now its definitely Elementalist with a Necromancer alt.
I played Elementalist Necro & Engineer for the first time this weekend, i have to say i enjoyed playing them, engi was definitely more fun in pve than pvp though. i'm not a huge caster fan though, i always intended to be playing a warrior main since before any BWEs and that hasnt changed, guardian also feels like its missing a large chunk of health when you get to 80 though, it has the health of a leather wearer and all the damage seems to be based around burning. If i'm playing PvP it looks like its going to be a whole lot of warrior or ranger facerolling.
Guardian does have one of the lowest health totals in the game, oddly enough. A PvP guardian is mostly about supporting and condition control, from what I could tell. I imagine a well-played guardian will be the most annoying thing in the world in PvP. I didn't really play anything besides Guardian during this BWE, but I've had a ton of experience with Thief in the past. Having played both to about the same level, I can definitely say I like Guardian more, especially in group play. Thief feels like a very, uh... selfish class in groups, since you aren't really supporting your group much at all, and you're incredibly squishy. Guardian on the other hand had me feeling like a goddamn hero sometimes with making sure my group didn't have any conditions up. I only wish the Spirit Hammer wasn't confirmed as "broken" by the devs (During this BWE it performed a massive knockback every 3rd hit. It was AWESOME).
I did notice some interesting things about aggro this weekend, as well. In the dungeon, it seemed that I'd attract more aggro when I swapped from my greatsword to my mace/shield or focus setup. I could straight up tank some trash mobs without my party grabbing aggro at all if I kept my 1h and defensive OH equipped.
Guardians and Rangers are still ridiculously OP compared to the rest of the classes. Engineers can hold points forever if specced properly. Thief is still at the bottom of the list mainly due to survivability issues against condition heavy builds, which everyone decided to run this weekend. They gave us a huge passive movement speed increase but also took away a few abilities, which annoyed me. I honestly don't think they know what to do with thief at this point but I'm sticking with it regardless because I'm a masochist and love the play style.
This is all of course for structured PVP, as all the classes are more than viable for WvW and PVE. I expect many many balance changes before release though.
I always knew that guardians natural defensive-ness and support was really good, but when i play one i don't want to feel the need to only use Staff and Healing Breeze to be useful in any situation. it kind of feels that the lack of damage output by guardians and the low health made me feel reeeeally squishy, especially compared to say an elementalist where i could easily just switch to water and spam 2 heal skills and be back to dealing damage as soon as i cast those spells. The lack of natural movement speed makes me feel guardian is always going to be kept out of the action and in the back lines rather than the front line where you would expect a chain wearer to be.
That engineer care package just seems way too OP, medpacks & 3 turrets makes it difficult to survive long enough to kill the engineer without support, which i rarely ever get in sPvP.
As a full turrent specced engineer, I ran with a rifle, flame, healing and rocket turrent full time, and with my specs into care package, dropping it popped out an additional rifle, flame, healing, and a net turrent, plus additional medpacks. With increased range and 15% increased damage, plus 30% increased defense through specs, I was a turrent terror, and that was a lot of fun.
I've seen some engineers do a half-grenade half-turrent setup that works pretty well, freezing and rooting people with the nades while the turrents clean up. It amuses me that people don't do a better job of priortizing the rocket turrent, though. With big damage, knockdowns, and long range on the rockets, that turrent can be a lifesaver, especially when its overcharge only has a 20-second cooldown.
Were there any dungeons open for the beta? The only one i found was the Manor in the human area and it seemed to be closed off.
Also, how important do yall think it would be to be in a guild from the start? I kind of want to start off getting used to the game and, when i find a group i like joining up with them. I could see the need, or at least the advantage, of being in a group from the start though.
The Manor is the second of the dungeons that will be available at launch, Judging from the "token" armor levels, the story mode will be level 40 with the story mode being 45.
Don't mind the red/white dies, it is not exactly flattering on some pieces, but the preview system previews stuff in your current die setup. Things like shoulders and head are the default colors because my character has never had them.
As for their being any dungeons available, yes there was the Ascalon Catacombs. The same dungeon that has been available since the first closed press beta back in February. Unfortunately, they took out the "level up" NPC that was there in the press beta for all the BWEs to encourage people to level like mad so they could see it. So my friends and I didnt get to do it this weekend.
I dunno, I felt really useful while running with greatsword and mace/focus in groups. My damage output wasn't that different than my ranger friend's (though his solo survivability was much higher, but that's what rangers do). I swapped to staff/scepter when I knew I wasn't going to melee things. I used the condition removal signet as my heal because my build was centered around pulling conditions off of my group/getting rid of conditions ASAP. I think it's far too early to even worry about being stuck on the back lines, especially since we've barely scratched the surface with interesting builds.
Back lines? not really, The entire dynamic of every profession involves ins and outs. I think one of the devs streamed on sunday and was playing offensive type guardian with meditations traited using sword/shield and hammer. 2 teleports, constant burning and regen during, made him pretty strong. I love guardian, never felt squishy, but being smart about using movement + dmg negating skills + the number of binding skills is pretty damn sweet. The lower HP kinda sucks but it does make up for it.
No matter what kind of armor type is being worn every profession has the possibility to be in the front line in some form. Even warrior has to constantly move out of the front line from time to time.

Heavy armor on Asura females look great. Can't wait to start dyeing and mix and matching them with trans stones.
What is a follower? I had one that wasn't online so I couldn't ask them who they were o_O (3rd tab on friend list)
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Contacts_panel
The Contacts panel shows a list of friends and list of players one has blocked from communications. It can be opened via the people icon on the menu bar or via keyboard shortcut (Y). It has the following tabs:
- Friends list: (People icon) A list of all the player's contacts.
- The top of the tab allows players to change their online status via a pull-down menu.
- The add/search field allows you to add a new contact or search within your existing list for a specific player.
- The body of the tab shows each friend's online status, their location in the world, and a count of their current achievements.
- Group search: (People + search icon) This tab allows you to search for groups.
- Followers: (Person + right-arrow icon) A list of followers, i.e. people who have added you to their contacts (but who are not included in yours).
- Blocked list: (Universal anti-symbol) A list of blocked players. You can also use the search field at the top to add to the list.
Ohhh now if they called it a friends list instead of a fancy shmancy contact panel that wouldn't have been so hard to find on google lol. TY Bookmarking wiki!
I've seen videos of the giant chest rewards, for doing jumping puzzles, but are they one time only, or is it something you can do multiple times a day? Since they give gear equivalent to your level, it would seem you'd want to do it at max level, like how Rifts puzzle rewards were, but only if it's a one time thing.
It's only a 1-time thing, but there's no reason to wait until max level to do it since getting the "best" stats at level 80 is almost irrelevant with how easy it is.
Its not a 1 time thing. Puzzles reset at some point; either after leaving the zone or logging off maybe. I did the goemm's lab jumping puzzle on saturday, then on sunday while waiting for the finale event to start I ran up there again and was able to loot the chest. Somebody who was doing the same said that just going into Rata Sum was enough to have to do the whole puzzle over again; no idea on if he could loot the chest though.
It probably is linked to the daily achievements reset I would guess as there was a big chest in the asura/syvari 15-25 area next to a champ Hylek mob that I was able to loot multiple times but not until the next day.
So I've never played a p v p m.m.o before. And it really seems like guild wars is downplaying gear. Will this game have adaman hauberks and dalmaticas? Or will it basically be Like starcraft where everyone is on a level playing field no matter how many dungeons they have cleared. Id really like reward to equal effort (without aery type nonsense) and am a bit worried that all the shinies I collect wont mean anything g outside of looks.
