Only if they treat it like a horror movie. For some reason when I think of it as a standalone film, I can't help but think of Species. Guy goes into space. Brings back goo. Goo takes over space guy. People die. Guy fights goo. Goo splits into good and bad. Bad goo takes over random conveniently placed bad guy. Good goo guy fights bad goo guy. Good goo guy wins. Little bit of bad goo escapes. Queue the sequel.
And this sounds awful. Awful because it's a movie we've seen before except the edgy R rating means they can up the violence without making the plot any good. But the symbiotes lend themselves to that genre, since all the wisecracking reserved for Spider-Man would be nonexistent in this universe and they're scary looking alien parasites.
If this is going to be Venom and Carnage, I have no doubt they're gonna go the horror route to utilize that R, with Venom being the better of the two evils.
I was actually gonna ask if this is till gonna be Venom AND Carnage at all? Signs are pointing at just Venom.
Venom without Spider-man is not Venom. When symbiote merged with Spider-Man, not only did the symbiote adopt the spider powers, he also, adopted splayed spider logo on chest and back. Without Spider-Man in the mix, it's not going to be the same character, even from a pure aesthetic perspective. It'll just be a a dude covered in crude oil. Calling it now.
Also...
With that being said, it's going to be a hard sell.
The current Carnage book is a great example of the symbiote's without Spidey around.
edit: also, just because they aren't related, doesn't mean they won't mention anything about Spiderman or where the symbiote came from either.
Considering Sony owns Spiderman I doubt it works like that. It's probably the other way around.
I just hope to see a truly fucked up version of Carnage.
is carnage still a good guy that accidentally keeps killing people in the comics or did they fix that after Axis?
Right now he has his own title. It's a mix of traditional and Lovecraftian horror with him as the primary antagonist and John Jameson and Eddie Brock (as Man-Wolf and Toxin) hunting him down as he super-murders people.
No explanation of how he survived Axis that I'm aware of.
