I've always wondered how good their referral checking is...I once considered running a VM on various machines to install Dropbox and get the referral credit but it seemed like too much work at the risk of losing my account.
For those that do not know, Dropbox is cool service which will save the contents of a folder called 'Dropbox' to their cloud. You can install the software on any machine and the folders will stay up the date across them. Good for transferring files, versioning files (each save can be reverted through a previous version page) and backing up files you use, like Browser profiles, notes, images and music.

Its not that great how they check to see if your *real* i did not go overboard and gave myself 4 accounts. how can they tell if your someone who just does not use it anyways?
May as well, could always use more space: http://db.tt/oQhBE8UP
To get the bonus space you have to install the software on a machine. They can easily compare mac addresses, IP addresses and even subnets to make sure you aren't just cycling email addresses. I would find it highly suspicious, for example, if I saw an account with 32 referrals that all were on a 175.83.254.0/24 subnet; I'd immediately look into that particular account.
Somehow i doubt they really care that much. They make it difficult for idiots to do it, i highly doubt it's worth their time/effort to check for the .1% of people who actually care to do it for a grand total of 8 (or even 16 now) gb.
Like I said, I looked into it and they do ban accounts. Doing this sort of analysis is not difficult, they do not have to 'care' to do the simple analysis I mentioned. The cost-benefit is not worth it either, monetarily, to someone like me who knows simply using Amazon S3 provides the same service at a much lower cost. I can handle not having their Web UI because I can use things like rsync and version control to cover the gaps in S3 to Dropbox.
Dropbox always sounds fucking awesome but I can never figure out what the hell I'd want to be syncing since music would be more than the limit or just take up all the space. Browser syncing seems to be handled better by browser-based syncing services so I can't really come up with what small chunk of stuff I'd want to have on-hand between devices like this.
e-textbooks, group projects, and random file sharing among friends. I love dropbox. It's really awesome for school projects though.
I use it to share with friends, work, photos and various notes. For sharing with friends you can just right click a file and get a 'public link' that you can share to friends to download stuff on your dropbox. It was really easy to convince my advisor to use Dropbox, super easy to keep one set of files in sync allowing multiple parties to work on at the same time. Google Docs works for simple use cases, but when you need Microsoft Word for real writing, Dropbox really simplifies the sharing.
Here's a screenshot of the folders from my dropbox to give you an idea of how I use it (combination of work and personal)
