    Carmageddon: Reincarnation (PC/Mac/Linux) | Max Damage (PS4/XB1)

Carmageddon: Reincarnation is going to reintroduce the gaming world to the original freeform driving sensation, where pedestrians (and cows) equal points and your opponents are a bunch of crazies in a twisted mix of automotive killing machines. It’s the racing game where racing is for wimps.

…Max Damage is back! Carmageddon: Reincarnation is going to reintroduce the gaming world to the original freeform driving sensation, where pedestrians (and cows) equal points and your opponents are a bunch of crazies in a twisted mix of automotive killing machines. It’s the racing game where racing is for wimps.

Originally released for the PC in 1997, Carmageddon was an instant hit thanks to its anarchic gameplay and over-the-top surreal comedy violence. Here’s what a sample of the gaming press thought:

“Carmageddon is visceral, violent, vehicular fun...”
    GameSpot 8.8 out of 10

“Carmageddon, to get straight to the point, is one of the best computer games I've ever played… Carmageddon is God!”
Duncan McDonald 95% Classic Award PC Zone Magazine May 1997

Carmageddon won the Game of the Year trophy in the 1997 PC Zone Reader awards. Carmageddon 1 & 2 were Driving Game of the Year 1997/1998.

“Carmageddon is one of those games that only come along once in a blue moon. An essential purchase.”
Escape Magazine 6 out of 6

“The gameplay is spot on and anyone with a dark enough sense of humour should give it a go.”
Computer Gaming World 4 out of 5

“So next time you gun down coppers on GTA VI, just remember, Carmageddon’s controversy was there first, and you have a lot to thank it for.” RetroGarden

Back in 1997 a small, independent game studio called Stainless delivered its first PC game to an unsuspecting world. Rich in humour, bathed in gibs, and relishing its instant reputation as the poster child for everything that’s wrong with society (and therefore right in a videogame), the smash hit Carmageddon and its successors sold over two million copies worldwide.

Of course the copyright and truck-loads of cash went to the EVIL publisher, but Stainless survives to this day, still independent, still kicking, and still releasing successful products. (Check out our other work and credentials at stainlessgames.com.)

After years of negotiation, the original founders of Stainless recently bought back ALL the rights to Carmageddon. So now it’s back in its rightful home, we’ve embarked on the journey that will reboot the brand, and we want YOU to join us on that journey.

Carmageddon featured real-world environments that had been turned into killing fields, where the locals stay out on the streets at their peril. As well as using your car as a weapon, every level was sprinkled generously with power-ups that had a vast variety of mad effects: gluing pedestrians to the ground or rendering them blind so they couldn't see you coming; turning your suspension to jelly or your car into solid granite; arming you with the awesome Pedestrian Electro-Bastard Ray or the Pedestrian Flame-thrower - and a whole lot more!

    http://www.carmageddon.com/sites/all...rter/4way2.jpg

Carmageddon boasted a bunch of stand-out innovations: true 3D physics; dynamic car damage and repair; a feature-rich action replay system; and big, free roaming environments. Most of all, you were free to do what YOU wanted to, when YOU wanted to do it, however SILLY it might seem to anybody else.

With a host of crazed opponents and a wide variety of loopy locations, the single player game was a blast. And things got even more fun with the multiplayer games and the opportunity to send your friends to a fiery death.

    http://www.carmageddon.com/sites/all...ter/title3.jpg

Carmageddon: Reincarnation is a re-boot of everything that made the original games such a blast to play. The new game will be inspired by the classic environments, cars, drivers and power-ups from the original, but dragged screaming and kicking into the current state of the rendered art. And of course, there will be a bunch of brand new STUFF too, including true rag-doll pedestrians and physics-based power-ups that let you mess with their limbs whilst wiping away the tears - of laughter!

Multiplayer was the hidden-treasure of Carmageddon back in the dark days of LAN parties, but will now be able to be enjoyed by almost all of our players, thanks to the entire planet going online since then. The single player game will be brilliant too, thanks to demented opponents with demented A.I. brains made from demented code written by demented programmers.

    http://www.carmageddon.com/sites/all...r/ballbag2.jpg

Another cutting-edge feature that our loyal fans loved about the original game was the Action Replay facility, and this is also going to be coming back - but with a modern twist: You'll be able to post your clips on YouTube and other such sites. And of course we will be embracing the Social Media revolution and linking up to your Facebooks and Twitters with in-game integration so you can disturb your parents without even leaving the game.

The Carmageddon community means the world to us, and over the years a dedicated army of Modders continued to develop content for the original games. We’ll be making sure that the tools we use to craft the game are developed in such a way that we can release them as well, thus making player-generated content a central part of the Carmageddon: Reincarnation experience.

    http://www.carmageddon.com/sites/all...ter/title4.jpg

Thanks to in-house tech that’s been in constant development at the studio for more than a decade, we've been able to get prototyping under way. It helps that of the 8 man team that worked on the original game, 5 of us are still with the company and raring to go! This means we've been able to tune the driving experience, test new power-ups, and start creating the initial game assets.

    http://www.carmageddon.com/sites/all...ter/title5.jpg

But there's so much more involved in making a full game... it takes a lot of time, and flock of talented and committed (in every sense...) people. This requires a stack of money, as try as me might, they seem to insist on salaries at the end of every month. EVERY single month! We've tried paying them in cake and small bags of chocolate, but they keep coming back for more.

    http://www.carmageddon.com/sites/all...er/1stAid2.jpg

We’re a modest-sized indie developer (around 50 trapped souls), and we've already invested well over a third of a million dollars getting the rights back and beginning design and prototyping. This represents all of our profits from our other work - but we think it's worth it. We currently have a small team working on the project - but without some sort of dedicated funding, that can’t continue indefinitely. We can't put this game into full production without a sizeable team dedicated to it. So we need a pile of CASH to get the game made. Or more chocolate and nicer cake. But CASH is more likely to work, to be perfectly honest.

Now we have our baby back we really don’t want to have any creative control of the new game wrestled from us by a corporate investor, a publisher, or space aliens trying to subvert humanity using subliminal messaging in video games. We want to make sure that the game we make is the game that we (and Carmageddon’s fans, and a new generation of Carmageddon fans who don’t even know they want it yet) want to play.

What Do I Get For My Hard-Earned Dollars?

We've planned Carmageddon: Reincarnation as an iterative development project. This means that if we just make it to the $400k target, we'll be able to deliver Release #1 in February 2013. Kickstarter backers of $15 and above will receive Release #1 plus all subsequent releases.

If we exceed the $400k target, it'll allow us to include even more content in the first release. And if we smash the target, it'll also allow us to greatly expand the scope of the game, and to roll it out across more and more platforms, with Kickstarter backers getting to select their delivery platform of choice: consoles, tablets, phones, Macs, toasters, vibrating pillows, bananas... errrr.....

.....anyway! The higher our budget, the more it accelerates the development of major game features and get them in the game sooner, and the greater the ultimate scope of the game's content and delivery platforms. Wahoo! We all win!

    http://www.carmageddon.com/sites/all...ter/title6.jpg

We’re not just doing this because we saw what happened with Double Fine Adventure, Wasteland 2, and the other oldies around here that are making great comebacks; we were already working on Carmageddon: Reincarnation as a skunkworks project. What happened is that these other projects opened our eyes to the fantastic opportunity that crowd-sourced funding represents. We have an opportunity to make Carmageddon the game it always wanted to be - and to do so with the help of our fans. How perfect is that?

Anyway, other games don't let you glue a penguin to the ground and then fire it through a plate glass window with a giant spring. We do. We offer a unique service to humanity. Messy, but unique.

    http://www.carmageddon.com/sites/all...rter/gran2.jpg

Kickstarter has now proved itself to be the perfect place to fund a project in The Modern Way. And so, with a realistic target budget to get the first release of the game out, and pledges made through Kickstarter, we have the opportunity to make the game that we want to make, and that our fans want us to make too.

Plus we can also repay the dedication of the community at the same time, through the rewards system.

    http://www.carmageddon.com/sites/all...ter/title7.jpg

Well, talking of rewards – we have a great bunch of those lined up for you guys. What’s also GREAT about the Kickstarter funding model is being able to also offer a range of cool STUFF and even some THINGS to our backers, as a way of thanking them for their involvement in our shared goal. STUFF including early access to the project beta, plus a whole bunch of cool physical product THINGS, from t-shirts to stickers to posters and limited edition lovelies, right on up to actually being in the game as a pedestrian, billboard star or even a driver!

    http://www.carmageddon.com/sites/all...ter/Fatal1.jpg

You can even come and get drunk with the team! (Hospital bills are NOT included.)

You'll notice that we aren't asking for Shipping costs to be met by our backers. That's because we're covering the cost of shipping, out of the goodness of our hearts. Aren't we lovely. BUT - if you'd like to add a little extra to your pledge to help us meet the commitment, then obviously we'd be very grateful, and we'll talk about you in a respectful way during our tea breaks.

    http://www.carmageddon.com/sites/all...ter/title8.jpg

If we reach our Kickstarter target of $400,000, we'll be able to deliver the first release of Carmageddon: Reincarnation by February 2013. Following that, our backers will get every update of the game as it's released, for FREE. You get it all for the minimum “get the game” pledge of $15. You get to download the first release via Steam, and your updates will occur automatically after that.

    http://www.carmageddon.com/sites/all...ut-2-Small.jpg

So, in summary, this is an opportunity to be a key part of bringing back one of the pioneering titles in videogame history. Better than it was before; badder, shinier bloodier, sillier, and even more outrageous, with celebrity appearances by YOU and a bunch of other cool STUFF included because YOU made it possible. Plus MORE small WORDS in BOLD capitals. YES! And some LONGER ones too!

We're incredibly happy to be working on a project that's so close to our hearts, and we're thrilled that we've got the opportunity to do all the cool/stupid/fun stuff that we've discussed and planned over the years. We hope that you're excited at the prospect of being instrumental in bringing the next game in the Carmageddon series to life. Thank you very much for looking, and thank you IMMENSELY for your pledge!

Hot damn, I was just thinking of reinstalling Carmageddon 1 the other day for nostalgia purposes.

All I can ask for in this reboot is retaining the old floaty physics, and a cameo somewhere of the original driver from the first game. Bonus points if they bring back the live-action portrait shots.

Damn, I was just thinking about this game yesterday... Maybe I buy...

Goal was just hit, with 10 days to go. Hope they can make good use of their $400k to warrant enough sales/interest to produce more content since I doubt it'll get any higher than their bare minimum at the rate it's been climbing.

I could really go for a GOG release of the Carmageddon games since they apparently still own the source code to them also. I can't be arsed to figure out how to get DOSBOX running 3d games like that at playable speeds. Even got my two discs for #1 out recently to try and play it again. Might have to get the old Pentium 1 hooked up with it's good ol' Voodoo1 to play it in Glide.

    [EDIT] Guess I won't have to - http://www.gog.com/news/coming_soon_...don_splat_pack

Early Access coming to Steam on March 27th
Carmageddon: Reincarnation, an upcoming game in the destructive racing series, will make its debut on March 27th via Steam’s Early Access program, developer Stainless Games have announced. Stainless were the developers of the original Carmageddon and have re-acquired the rights to the franchise in recent years.

At present, Carmageddon: Reincarnation is at a pre-alpha stage. The game began development as a self-funded project with a skeleton team and was then funded via a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012. In 2013, one of the company’s shareholders, Les Edgar, invested in the project, too.

Kickstarter backers who contributed to Carmageddon: Reincarnation will have access to the game two weeks prior to its March 27th release on Early Access.

Early access has been out for backers for a day now. Just a couple cars and a couple unfinished tracks to race/muck-about on. All I have to say is, boy is it wearing its pre-alpha status with pride. Lucky to hit 30fps on my rig with the AI on, zero performance options currently.

Handling physics are pretty much exactly what I was expecting them to be. A little dose of floaty and spin-outy, as the original was to a fault at times, so I'm pleased.

Repairs have the nice touch of broken shrapnel/parts of your car flying in from their location if nearby, rather than materializing out of thin-air.

It’s the racing game where racing is for wimps.

    • Over 30 cool custom killing machines, each with their own highly distinctive character

Folks who own Reincarnation on PC will get Max Damage's PC at no extra cost as well from the look of things, which is good since Reincarnation was a bit of a technical/performance mess well after release. From a kickstarter mail they sent out.
Today we announced the news that Carmageddon: Max Damage will be released on consoles in mid 2016. We hope you’re as excited as us at the prospect of Carmageddon reaching a wider audience through console, and even better, when Carmageddon: Max Damage is released on PC you will automatically get it too. Yes, that’s another Carmageddon in your Steam library – for free!
Just unsure if Max Damage is the same game with a new coat of paint (and hopefully fixed engine performance) or a whole new product though.

    Max Damage on June 3rd.

I've read new installment, but this really just looks like a definitive edition.
