First mentioned in 2008, the hotly anticipated sequel to Ubisoft adventure game Beyond Good & Evil remains an enigma; a confirmed, but rarely talked about title in the French publisher's upcoming library.

Speaking with Polygon last week, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot assured fans that the company, and in particular game dev auteur Michel Ancel, remain passionate about Beyond Good & Evil 2 and that work continues on the title, albeit slowly.

While the game is in development, Guillemot said, it's not the only project Ancel is working on.

"What's very important is that Michel Ancel is kind of doing too many things at the same time," he said. "He was working on Rayman Origins last year, and he's working a lot on Rayman Legends this year. So, you know, when he does that, he kind of puts too much of his time on the other projects that he has.

"So the fact is, that working on Legends is slowing the process on Beyond Good and Evil 2."

That doesn't mean that Ubisoft or Ancel are disinterested in the title, just that he's being pulled in many directions, Guillemot added.

"It's really a game that we've been working, we have worked on, and is a game that we want to do," he said. "But there are so many things that have to be done that, you know, this one is going to come in line at one point, but at the moment Michel is really on Rayman Legends."

The original Beyond Good & Evil, a game that borrows its title from a book by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, was a commercial failure, but critical success. In the game, players take on the role of a young photojournalist working to uncover a planet-wide alien conspiracy in the year 2435. The 2003 game was re-released for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in 2011 as a full HD remastered version.

Word of a sequel first came in 2008, but official, substantive updates have been few and far between. Last year, Ancel told GameTrailers that the game would be coming to next-gen consoles. Earlier this year, Ancel confirmed that the game remains in "active" development.

tl:dr Rayman is to blame as to why this hasn't been finished, yet.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 was first announced for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in May 2008. Since then, the game’s been largely silent, with publisher Ubisoft hinting that current-gen hardware isn’t enough for the Michel Ancel-led sequel.

That silence shouldn’t last much longer.

“I don’t give comments anymore on Beyond Good & Evil 2,” Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told Kotaku during a post-PlayStation Meeting interview, “because I think … the next time next time we communicate we have to have something new.”

    He added: “It’s coming.”

A lot of rumors out there now that Michel Ancel will be leaving Ubisoft after what happened with Rayman Legends.

    Don't expect current gen release
Beyond Good & Evil creator Michel Ancel has reiterated that a sequel to the cult-classic adventure will have to be a next-gen affair.

I think [on current platforms] Beyond Good & Evil 2 was possible, but it’d be painful,” Ancel told Gamereactor.

“It’s always possible to do anything on any kind of console, but sometimes you need to spend your energy not on the optimizations or things like that.

“Now that we have the [new] consoles around the corner we’re working on them. We’re trying to see how we can get the power out of those consoles because there are still things we need to understand on those consoles, but yes, Beyond Good & Evil is a project I always have in mind and I hope good things will come for this project very soon.”

    Don’t expect a Wii U version then, I guess.

    2014?
Beyond Good & Evil 2, while not yet greenlit at Ubiosft Montpellier, could be announced within the next year, creator Michel Ancel has said.

“We’ve made a lot of things already,” Ancel told Eurogamer. “Now we need to put them together and make that game. If there would be any communication it will be in the next year, just trying to talk about the fact we are on it. But so many people in Ubisoft want to make that game, honestly.”

The sequel was once formally announced in 2008—before being put on the back-burner. According to Ancel, the project was too ambitious for the current generation consoles. The vision for the first game was much more high-reaching than it came to be, which is something Ancel does not want to see happen with the sequel.

“In Beyond Good & Evil 1, at first it was a full planet, you could go to the North Pole and see the eternal day,” he explained. “But we had to limit it as we were only 35 people. We couldn’t fill the whole world with all the things we wanted. We were frustrated at the end of Beyond Good & Evil 1, and when we started the sequel we started again with this idea – you’re free and can investigate and travel the world as much as you want.”

Ancel wants Beyond Good & Evil 2 to be more of an open-world game.

“We wanted to not make this experience [Beyond Good & Evil 2] linear, to give the player freedom to explore planet to planet, city to city – and not empty cities, of course,” he said. “So these are things we worked on.”

But what of the Ubisoft bosses? Are they as passionate as Ancel about the project?

“The Ubisoft bosses are very careful about keeping the company on track at the right time,” Ancel concluded. “If we make the sequel – and it’s something we want to do – we will do it because they are convinced it’s the right thing to do. And we need to be convinced that they will be convinced, and I’m really confident with that.

“They’ve done really well with the different games that are coming out right now and the ones they’ve already released. They’re in a good place in terms of the business, and it could be very interesting to make a game like that as there aren’t too many games out there right now that would be like ours. So I think it’s the right time and I’m confident that they will follow the team.”

Michel Ancel founds a new studio, Wild Sheep Studio, will be working on BG&E 2
    http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/...ss-release.jpg
    http://fat.gfycat.com/BelatedActiveHydatidtapeworm.mp4
Rayman and Beyond Good & Evil creator Michel Ancel has started his own studio.

Dubbed Wild Sheep Studio, the new Montpellier-based indie outfit consists of 13 staffers and is working on an original game to be announced soon.

Ancel will remain at Ubisoft, however.

"We are fortunate to have some of the industry's finest talents, including Michel Ancel, working with us at our studio," said managing director of Ubisoft's Annecy, Paris and Montpellier studios, Xavier Poix in a statement to Eurogamer. "In addition to spending some of his time on this new venture, Michel is leading the creative development of select projects at Ubisoft Montpellier, including an extremely ambitious new title that is very close to his and the team's heart."

That last sentence is certainly tantalising to fans of Beyond Good & Evil since its sequel has been lost in limbo for ages, though Ubisoft has ensured everyone off and on that it's been in development since a teaser trailer surfaced in 2008.

When pressed for comment about this in light of recent events, Ubisoft confirmed to Eurogamer that the Rayman creator is in fact working on a Beyond Good & Evil sequel. Here's the exact statement the publisher offered on the matter:

In many ways, BG&E is an inimitable game - it appeals to all generations of gamers and is an inspiration behind many of Ubisoft Montpellier's past and future games. It's still far too early to give many details about this new title, but what we can say is that while Michel and the team at Ubisoft Montpellier are working with the core tenets of BG&E, they're developing something that aspires to push past the boundaries of a proverbial sequel and leverages next-gen technologies to deliver a truly surprising, innovative and exceptional game. The entire team is excited about the direction this extremely ambitious project is taking, and we'll have more to share later, as it progresses.
That certainly sounds promising! Then again, Ancel and Ubisoft have been teasing this thing for over six years, so it's not 100 per cent certain that this is his next game. He might just be tinkering away at it a little at a time while pursuing other projects.

BG&E was doomed at a AAA studio, where the pressures would mount to add/change things fundamental to the game to make it less of a financial risk, especially considering how poorly the first game sold.

    Rumor: NX Exclusive
According to a rumor received by Destructoid this week, the game may actually come to fruition in the not-too-distant future. If the information is to be believed, Nintendo has pulled a Bayonetta 2, securing the Beyond Good and Evil sequel as an NX exclusive for 2017.

So, what's our source here? Our initial source of the rumor comes from Alexander Maier, the Dual Pixels writer who published Geno's recent NX hardware rumors last weekend. Geno, who has successfully leaked new Pokémon forms and Microsoft's IllumiRoom project, provided Maier with a lengthy document, which was passed on to Destructoid to assess for veracity.

We also reached out to a second source, who independently gave a number of the same bullet points regarding the future of Beyond Good and Evil. The number of points of crossover between these two sources suggests that this rumor, while not confirmed by Nintendo, may hold water.

According to the supposed leak, the game is currently assigned the working title Beyond Good and Evil: The Prejudices of Philosophers. This is apparently a reference to a specific chapter in the philosophical text Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche, which details how morality can be altered by authority, and the ways black-and-white morality overlooks the larger complexity of the nature of morals.

That would be such a lose-lose situation. Even if the game ever comes out, it's likely going to be complete shit just because that's what happens when a game is in development hell for such a long time. Good or bad, you have half the fanbase split between being upset that it's on a different console than the original (See: Bayonetta 2), and, assuming it's bad, the other half blaming Nintendo's hardware as the reason it's bad. So, best case scenario is you only piss off half the people that want the game.

    Still in Development
“It’s still on the way,” Guillemot said when questioned about the sequel. “It’s something that at one point you will see, yes.”

Asked if it is it actively being worked on, or whether or not it’s further out, Guillemot added: “It’s difficult to say. Michel [Ancel] is working on it, but he’s doing two games at the same time—he’s doing WiLD at the same time—so it’s coming along, but he has to spend more time on it so we can see it faster.”

Game is now in pre-production, 7 years after an announcement/teaser. Which is quite comical.

I tried to get into the original with the re-release on 360, but couldn't really get into it and didn't understand the rabid following this game has. But hey, different strokes and all.

Technical Issues Delayed the Original Development Cycle
    https://www.instagram.com/p/BLvF-a9AYKV/

Rumor: Jade's Origin Semi-Rebooted, Reveal trailer attached to NX announcement, Summer 2018 release
As many have noted since Ancel’s Instagram reveal for the game, neither Ubisoft or Ancel are referring to the game as Beyond Good & Evil 2. Lets Play Video Games has been informed by a source familiar with negotiations on the project that the game is planned to be more of a standalone reboot than a traditional sequel.

According to our source, the currently planned direction for the game is that it will partially retell Jade’s origin tale from Beyond Good & Evil, flesh out Peyj’s backstory, then continue to extrapolate on the ending of the original game. The intention is that players who have not played the original will be able to jump into the new game, which will feature a subtitle rather than a number at the end of its title, and understand both who Jade is and what drives Pey’j. It also seeks to provide closure to fans of the original wondering what the cliffhanger at the end meant for the series’ ongoing plot.

Additionally, we have learned from a separate source that there are plans for a new CG trailer for the game to be shown alongside the NX reveal. Much like the 2008 trailer, this is planned to be a tone piece rather than a plot or gameplay reveal, and will be used to announce its NX exclusivity. The game is currently aiming for a Summer 2018 release window, according to sources at Ubisoft.
