Hmm, looking more and more promising. May just give Football Manager a run for it. OT: Why do so many shots of Messi look like they were taken just before he said "Hey... what the shit is he doing to my car?"

Kickstarter seems to be the place to go when you need funding, especially in the world of video games. Tribute Games, the team behind Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, have started a Kickstarter campaign for their latest project, Mercenary Kings.

Mercenary Kings is a side-scrolling 2D platforming action game which involves shooting, looting, "intense boss battles" and the ability to craft any weapon to your specific liking, with the promise that "possibilities are nearly endless."

Tribute Games is aiming to reach a goal of $75,000 but according to the Kickstarter page, they need $200,000 for "Mercenary Kings to reach its full potential." The additional funding will go towards, more weapons and character customisation, more missions, additional content, four-player online co-op and a console version.

As with any Kickstarter project, the more money you spend the greater the bonuses. The top tier bonuses for Mercenary Kings involve becoming a hostage in the game, designing your own weapon, and having your name listed in the credits.

At the time of writing, there have been 283 backers who have pledged $8,940, with 29 days to go.

Today at gamescom, the world's largest trade fair and event for interactive games and entertainment, Electronic Arts took a bold step to spearhead the industry’s digital revolution and announced Command & Conquer. The previously announced Command & Conquer Generals 2 has been transformed to be a part of this new digital experience, giving gamers complete access to the cutting-edge visuals, sound and destruction of a full, AAA strategy game – for free. The new online platform and service will launch in 2013, with the Generals universe representing the first of many free offerings within the storied franchise EA is planning to launch with Command & Conquer.

With a familiar blend of cerebral, strategic gameplay and fun, fast-paced action, Command & Conquer will deliver an authentic and modern RTS experience that will instantly exhilarate longtime fans and captivate new players. Gamers can sign up for a chance to be among the first to try the closed beta of Command & Conquer at www.CommandandConquer.com/free.

“We are thrilled about this opportunity to transform Command and Conquer into a premier online experience,” said Jon Van Caneghem, VP/GM at EA. “For nearly two decades, this franchise has existed as something you buy; now we are creating a destination where our fans will be able to access the entire Command and Conquer universe, starting with Generals and continuing with Red Alert, Tiberium, and beyond. With Frostbite 2, we are able to keep an emphasis on the AAA quality our consumers expect while staying true to the RTS gameplay they know and love – all available online for free.”

An all out war rages in Command & Conquer, as players take control of multiple factions, compete for resources, build up operation bases, and lead massive batteries of tanks, soldiers, and aircraft into battle. With incredibly detailed units, fully destructible environments, dynamic physics, and exhilarating visual effects, Command & Conquer is poised to re-define what gamers expect from a strategy game. Heralding feedback driven design, Command & Conquer will evolve and develop with an expanding array of new content based on community feedback.

Command & Conquer will be available as a free, client-based game for the PC in 2013.

Castle Crashers is Coming to the PC!
Castle Crashers, the awesome side-scrolling brawler that's a lot older than most of us probably realise, is getting a third lease on life with the announcement of a PC port.

Developers Behemoth revealed today at GamesCom that the game, which was released on Xbox 360 in 2008 and PS3 in 2010, will be coming to Valve's Steam platform, and will feature stuff like integrated voice chat, Steam Cloud support, both local and online multiplayer and of course achievements.

Local multiplayer on a PC? Bless you, Behemoth.

No word on a release date, but it'll be playable at PAX later this month.

    http://mashable.com/2012/08/17/onlive-layoffs/
We’re hearing unconfirmed reports that OnLive — a cloud gaming startup focused on bringing a console experience to devices such as the iPhone, iPad and Android phones — laid off its entire staff Friday.

According to a source close to the situation, the company called an all hands meeting at 10am PDT, at which the entire staff was fired. Some staffers may be rehired as the company transitions to its next unknown iteration.

OnLive most recently announced a partnership with Ouya, the Android-based hacker friendly game console that broke records and stole hearts on Kickstarter.

The company was preparing to launch a new connected device in conjunction with Vizio. Past conversations with the company also indicated that a focus on mobile and tablet devices would continue.

Our source tells us that many employees blame the failure of the company squarely on the CEO — who refused to sell the company “many times.” There is speculation that the future company may simply be pure intellectual property play. OnLive reportedly has lots of patents covering cloud-distributed content, especially in 3D graphics.

Game developer Brian Fargo tweeted information (former) employees are sending him that suggest the company will cease to exist by days end.

    Developing…

In today's news, we learn that OnLive's management are a bunch of sociopathic shitbags!

    http://techcrunch.com/2012/08/17/sou...o-acquisition/

tl;dr onlive took a buyout from some fresh investors, lays off nearly their entire staff and wipes out their equity in the original company, re-incorporates as a new entity. oh, but they'll re-hire the laid off workers, who i'm sure are going to be really eager to go back to work for the new company after getting royally hosed.

    another article on the Onlive debacle;

A now laid-off OnLive employee has revealed that the cloud gaming company has been purchased by an 'unknown party'.

Citing the anonymous insider, Engadget reports that the mass of layoffs today have affected around 50 per cent of staff, which comes as the firm makes "across the board cuts", adding that no severance will be offered and "stock holdings are essentially worth nothing".

According to the site, "Those being kept on have reportedly received offer letters from the new company,".

The source suggested that the firm's huge operating costs - apparently around $5 million a month - are partly to blame for the sudden and surprising move.

Despite today's events, OnLive's director of corporate communications Brian Jaquet remains tight lipped with several 'no comment' responses, while telling Forbes, "We are not going out of business."

CVG has again reached out to OnLive for response on the latest reports.

Update: TechCrunch corroborates the report, citing 'a reliable source' as saying that CEO Steve Perlman has found a buyer, and the party "wants all of OnLive's assets - the intellectual property, branding, and likely patents". The site's source suggests that the cuts were made "to reduce the company's liability" as the takeover goes through.

5mil a month? mother of god, i can't believe someone actually decided to back this company for a second time.

it's probably in one of the articles you linked, but one of the reports i read had an insider saying the service averaged fewer than 2000 concurrent users. how much does a subscription cost, $10/month or so? royalties on game licenses can't be more than a few dollars per, and no matter how generous you get with the actual paid subscriber base (provided the concurrent users figure is accurate)... sheeit, they had to be absolutely hemorrhaging money.

my prediction is the new entity is going to incorporate a lot of advertising into the service and still manage to fail within the next year

    i sure hope i'm right

onlive console is $99, if you choose to use that. otherwise the service is "free," but you have to purchase the games which range from $5 to $50. Oh and there are game rentals, too, $4.99 for 3-day rentals, and $8.99 for 5-day.

i can't imagine that changes much in the long run. new investors are probably fucked or just angling to get some kind of tax break on buying a failing company or something like that, haha.
