December 2014 will be the anniversary for the SaGa series. We have various efforts being prepared for that. We’re still figuring out things out, but look out for an concrete announcement hereafter. Thanks until then!

Here's to hoping it's not a bunch of stupid mobile crap.

I like how the SCE devs were like "Hey, buy the PS4".

Imageepoch has me excited, Level 5 has me a bit worried. I expect nothing out of Square's "SaGa Anniversary" except "Lightning SaGa".

Sony to shut down multiplayer servers for Gran Turismo 5 and Resistance series
Sony has announced it’s shutting down online multiplayer servers and ceasing all online functionality support for titles such as Gran Turismo 5 and all the Resistance series.

In a service update on the PS Blog, the firm confirmed the dates and all the affected titles.

As of March 28 all online functions for Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2 and Resistance 3 will no longer be available. And as of May 20 all online functions for Gran Turismo 5 will no longer be available.

This follows Sony’s announcement to shut down the online service for SOCOM 4, which is effective this month.

Valve will finish HL3 if the gaming community really wants to see it happen
Half-Life 3 is becoming something of a running joke in the industry now, and while we can titter and guffaw about the matter, Valve founder Gabe Newell has set some records straight in a new interview.

Speaking with the Washington Post, Newell recalled, “When we started out we were a single-player video game company that could have been really successful just doing Half-Life sequel after Half-Life sequel, but we collectively said let’s try to make multiplayer games even though there’s never been a commercial successful multiplayer game.

“Then we tried to do Steam. There were a bunch of people internally who thought Steam was a really bad idea, but what they didn’t think was that they would tell the people who were working on Steam what to do with their time. They were like “that’s what you want to do with your time, that’s fine, but we’re going to spend our time working on Half-Life 2. We think you’re kind of wasting your time, but it’s your time to waste.”

As we know, Steam worked out quite splendidly, but Newell – in less elegant words – explained why a new Half-Life hasn’t happened yet, “So, if somebody becomes the group manager of X, they’re going to really resist it when X is not what you want to do in the next round of games. You don’t want them to sort of burrow into that – you want them to recognize that being really good at Half-Life level design is not as nearly as valued as thinking of how to design social multi-player experiences. You’ve had them feel like they have an organization and title tied up to something when the key is to just continue to follow where the customers are leading.”

That line about customers seems counter to the many baying gamers screaming at Newell and company to make Half-Life 3 a thing you can play. However, Newell made clear that he’s not blind to the wants and needs of the community.

“We definitely in a sense have an army of customers who are always helping us stay honest…,” he concluded. “We’ve essentially crowd-sourced supervision of a lot of these decisions to our customers and it works way better than almost any other system we could design. They’re rabid, they’re passionate, and there are a lot of them.”

Is that everything server-related on GT5? Because it had all the car-lending/trading/B-Spec shit in addition to the standard multiplayer lobbies. I also don't get why a multi-million seller is killing off its multiplayer servers this early.

    SHAQ FU 2
Shaquille O’Neal confirms that Shaq Fu 2 is “coming soon” in an exclusive interview with GamerFitNation at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
“The graphics look crazy,” says O’Neal. Gamers could see Shaq Fu 2 on next-generation consoles in the near future.

Watch the video for the full interview:

Gamers may remember the original Shaq Fu, released for the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear and Amiga in 1994. The game received wildly varying reviews, and is featured on numerous lists of the worst games ever made. The game also has some hardcore fans, though, so they’ll surely be looking forward to the release of Shaq Fu 2.

Candy Crush Saga developer, King, is suing the developers of The Banner Saga because they feel people will confuse the two games
Not content with candy-related takedowns, King has seemingly contradicted its promises to be thoughtful in its application of trademark claims by filing a notice against The Banner Saga, a game with absolutely no connection to Candy Crush Saga beyond a shared word.

Following rumours earlier today, King’s claim against The Banner Saga developer Stoic was confirmed by the discovery of a Notice of Opposition filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office.

“The Banner Saga mark is confusingly and deceptively similar to Opposer’s previously used Saga Marks,” King’s lawyers wrote in the claim.

“The use and registration by Applicant of the mark The Banner Saga for Applicant’s goods is likely to cause confusion or to cause mistake or deception in the trade, and among purchasers and potential purchasers, with Opposer’s Saga Marks, again resulting in damage to Opposer.”

The Banner Saga is a turn-based tactics game wrapped up in a narrative-driven RPG for Mac and PC, whereas Candy Crush saga is a casual, social puzzle game about sweets for mobile and Facebook.

Before we get out the tar and feathers and start screaming for King’s blood, remember that under US trademark law if companies do not protest potential trademark infringements then they are in danger of losing their trademarks altogether, leaving them open to genuine copycats. Even when both companies are aware of any real impact, the legalities must be pursued – as when Bethesda and Mojang went to war over Scrolls, managing to settle the case without a title change. Superannuation has been tweeting examples of silly-seeming trademark claims today.

    King trademarks CANDY in Europe
Candy Crush Saga maker King claims similar titles will lead to “consumer confusion”.

Game developers are beiing hit with legal notices from King.com about the use of the word “candy” in their game titles.

The maker of Candy Crush Saga now owns the trademark to the word “candy” as it relates to games (and clothing, apparently), and it is now stating that any game in Apple’s iOS store that uses the word is infringing on its IP rights.

King is asking games with the word “candy” in them to be removed from the App Store.

One developer to feel the wrath of King is Ben Hsu, maker of All Candy Casino Slots.

“Your use of CANDY SLOTS in your app icon uses our CANDY trademark exactly, for identical goods, which amounts to trademark infringement and is likely to lead to consumer confusion and damage to our brand,” reads a note from Candy’s legal team, as reported by Gamezebo.com.

“The addition of only the descriptive term “SLOTS” does nothing to lessen the likelihood of confusion”

King applied for the trademark last February and was granted it at the start of this year. The situation is similar to Tim Langdell’s claim on the word “edge” which caused grief for game developers for years. The difference here is King is actively creating and supporting games with “Candy” in the title.

If developers refuse to remove their games from the App Store, King has the right to take further legal action.

Candy Crush Saga developer King has responded to concerns over its successful trademarking of the word ‘Candy.’ The studio has released a statement on the matter, stressing that it won’t pursue every use of the word.

We reported on the King ‘Candy’ trademark this morning.

Now, speaking with GI.biz, a King spokesperson stated, “We have trademarked the word ‘CANDY’ in the EU, as our IP is constantly being infringed and we have to enforce our rights and to protect our players from confusion.

Wait. Hold on a minute. Are you telling me that this is going to be a cheesy rail shooter, a la old-school arcade games with big guns and brain-dead AI? Suddenly, my interest in this game has gone from "don't care" to "sign me up for that shit right now."

Namco Bandai’s next Gundam game is Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: Missing Link for PlayStation 3, this week’s Famitsu reveals.

The game marks the return of the Gundam Side Story series. 1997 saw the release of Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: The Blue Destiny for Sega Saturn, followed by Gundam Side Story 0079: Rise From the Ashes for Dreamcast in 1999, and Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: Space, To the End of a Flash for PS2 in 2003. It is the first title in the series after 11 years, and follows a side story taking place during the One Year War.

A release date is currently unannounced, but the game is in development at Gundam Side Story and Gundam Battle Operation studio B.B. Studio. It is a third-person action shooter featuring not only terrestrial fights, but space ships, too. Players will choose between the Earth Federation Forces or Principality of Zeon, each with their own respective stories.

A number of Mobile Suits that appeared during the One Year War appear, including terrestrial, underwater, and space suits. There is a Mobile Suit customization component, and there are original Mobile Suits, too.

Battles take the form of a three-suit platoon. You can switch which suit you operate during battles.

The main characters of the Earth Federation Forces are of the 20th Independent Mechanized Unit. To the public, they are members of a Mobile Suit experiment unit, but they actually enforce without connection to the Federation or Zeon. They carry the face of a disciplinary force known as the “Slave Race.”

The main characters of the Principality of Zeon are of the 8th Platoon of the Special Competitive Unit Marchocias. They are strong ruffians who crave military success.
