Low key, but would've been serious stuff if something went wrong.Japan says China aimed military radar at Japanese ship near disputed islands

SEOUL — A Chinese military vessel last week locked its weapons-targeting radar on a Japanese warship, Japan’s Ministry of Defense said Tuesday, marking a brief but dangerous escalation in the showdown over maritime territory between Asia’s two largest economies.
The Chinese ship eventually unlocked its radar without firing a shot, the ministry said, but the alleged incident underscores how the neighbors — wrangling over uninhabited islands in the East China Sea — are just one mistake away from potential armed conflict.
On Tuesday, Japan lodged a protest with the Chinese government over the incident, which it said took place near the contested islands that Japan calls Senkaku and China calls Diaoyu.
“Beaming of radar for firing is very abnormal, and it could have put us in a very grave situation if things went wrong,” Japan’s defense minister, Itsunori Onodera, told reporters, according to the Kyodo news agency. He added that in January, a Chinese ship targeted a Japanese helicopter in the same manner.
The two incidents mark the first times during the six-month maritime standoff that China has supposedly used such radar on Japanese ships or aircraft. According to Japan’s Asahi Shimbun newspaper, which cited Japanese Defense Ministry officials, the Chinese vessel and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ship were less than two miles apart when the radar was used.
Although Tokyo and Beijing have long been at odds over the rocky chain of remote islands — the countries have competing narratives about decades- and centuries-old claims — tensions spiked in September when Japan bought three of the islands from a private landowner. Previously, Japan rented and controlled the islands, although China and Taiwan also staked claims.
Since the purchase, relations between China and Japan have hit their lowest point in decades. China has steadily increased its surveillance of the waters around the islands; incursions into Japanese territory, once rare, now occur almost daily.
More recently, China has been sending aircraft to the area, and on one occasion, China and Japan scrambled fighter jets in a game of cat-and-mouse. Both governments, hemmed in by nationalism, are limited in their ability to calm the situation, security analysts in Asia say.
China’s government describes its right to the islands as an “undeniable fact backed up by historical records,” and analysts say Beijing is pressing Tokyo to acknowledge that the territory is up for grabs. Japanese officials refuse to admit that a territorial dispute even exists; they say the islands are an “inherent” part of Japan, based on “historical facts,” according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
Japan’s new prime minister, Shinzo Abe, said several days ago that there is “no room for negotiations” over the islands, but he did raise the prospect of a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Do it China. Torpedo a Japanese vessel and start a war I dare you.
Looks like China is just flexing their muscle and reminding Japan that they're around and about and they want some revenge. I highly doubt that China would start an international incident at this point in time knowing the consequences for such actions but who knows, nationalism is one helluva drug. Maybe if they sink one boat that'll sate their bloodlust for the time being, they can just apologize or something.
That advisory looks like standard "Asians are squabbling atm, stay out of their way till the game of Battleship is over" just in case someone gets jumpy and accidentally fires on 'Murica?

shit like that happens more often than some people realize, and i was actually onboard when this went down. I'm sure more happened than what was released in the press.
That wasn't the first time either. I remember when it happened back in ~'04 I wanna say.
Nations are gonna nation. All its really gonna take is one incident.
Oh, unless you're the USS Stark. Then its ok to shoot Exocets at it.
2013 Edition
I GET IT
I doubt they would either cause they know the US would immediately get involved and our economies are so intertwined now.. A lot of people in China hate Japan though. If they aren't old enough to remember the war I'm sure what the Japanese did has been beaten into their heads sense birth by propaganda.
US B-52 bombers challenge disputed China air zone
http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/image...gas_624map.gifhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-25110011The US has flown two B-52 bombers over disputed islands in the East China Sea in defiance of new Chinese air defence rules, officials say.
China set up its "air defence identification zone" on Saturday insisting that aircraft obey its rules or face "emergency defensive measures".
A Pentagon spokesman said the planes had followed "normal procedures".
The islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, are a source of rising tension between the two nations.
Japan has dismissed the Chinese defence zone as "not valid at all" and two of its biggest airlines announced on Tuesday they would heed a request from the government in Tokyo not to implement the new rules.
US Colonel Steve Warren at the Pentagon said Washington had "conducted operations in the area of the Senkakus".
"We have continued to follow our normal procedures, which include not filing flight plans, not radioing ahead and not registering our frequencies," he said.
There had been no response from China, he added.
The aircraft, which were unarmed, had taken off from Guam on Monday and the flight was part of a regular exercise in the area, US defence officials said. Both planes later returned to Guam.
The US - which has more than 70,000 troops in Japan and South Korea - had previously said it would not abide by the Chinese-imposed zone.
US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel called it a "destabilising attempt to alter the status quo in the region". The White House said it was "unnecessarily inflammatory".
Japan has already lodged a strong protest over what it said was an "escalation" by China.
Taiwan, which also claims the islands, expressed regret at the Chinese move and promised that its military would take measures to protect national security.
In its statement announcing the air defence zone on Saturday, the Chinese defence ministry said aircraft must report a flight plan, "maintain two-way radio communications", and "respond in a timely and accurate manner" to identification inquiries.
"China's armed forces will adopt defensive emergency measures to respond to aircraft that do not co-operate in the identification or refuse to follow the instructions," the statement said.
Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airlines said on Tuesday they would stop filing flight plans demanded by China on routes through the zone following a request from the Japanese government.
Singapore Airlines and Australia's Qantas have both said they will abide by the new rules.
However, Australia summoned the Chinese ambassador on Tuesday to express opposition over the zone.
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said "the timing and manner" of China's announcement were "unhelpful in light of current regional tensions".
i do not want yet another reason to be busy at work. china, shut the fuck up and go away
Given the lack of Chinese response and the nature of the claim (unenforceable and without merit), I get the feeling this is just a negotiating tactic for when China finally wants to deal with these issues. Also, it gets to test out Japanese and American resolve without much effort.
Don't worry guys, I read The Bear and the Dragon and we win.
