*REMOVED BECAUSE LEGAL ASSHOLES*
About time I see one of these that isn't involving Kickstarter.
Very interested, since that genre is close to non-existant these days.
Well, it is using the kickstarter model, just not on kickstarter, though the site is hammered at the moment. I'd wait until the warning is gone/site is back to normal.

wing commander + freelancer combined with cryengine 3, pc only, coop, offline multiplayer server, official mod-support...ALL MY MONEY!
Very interested in this, I was a huge fan of Wing Commander/Privateer/Freelancer back in the day.
I miss Wing Commander. Game was great.
I didn't really play the Wing Commander games but I have super fond memories of Privateer/Privateer 2. Take all of my money!
on kickstarter now too: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cig/star-citizen/
It's kind of impressive what they managed.
1mil in nine days (50% of total), without the trust factor of Kickstarter vetting, and despite their own site borking. And the kickstarter has snapped up 100k in an instant. If they had launched on kickstarter, they might have had a shot at a funding record.
This is really going to set fire to kickstarter's ass to expand itself to other countries/currencies, and get other payment providers onboard with adding service that supports this model.
Wing Commander was an awesome series. Brb while I literally throw dollar bills at my monitor.
Make mine a double.
This sounds a LOT like my concept of an ideal game. I love EVE Online, but it's really hard to get into, and the customization available for the foreseeable future is... lackluster at best. This sounds like it fixes both of those things, while also keeping the sandboxiness that EVE is famous for.
I await this title with great interest.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...-26-days-to-goChris Roberts' PC exclusive space sim Star Citizen has smashed its Kickstarter goal with 26 days to go.
It had called for half a million dollars. At the time of publication it had raised $511,591 from 11, 271 backers.
The new figure goes some way to validating Roberts' decision to use Kickstarter after his own crowd funding website, RobertSpaceIndustries.com, collapsed under the weight of fan interest.
The Kickstarter money, added to the amount raised on RSI, brings the total to $1.85 million.
Roberts' crowd funding effort is unique in that he wants to raise between two and four million dollars to validate his private investors' valuation of the project and thus spark further investment. The game itself will cost between 12 million and 14 million dollars to create.
"I can make it for this price because I'm not making it inside the system," he told Eurogamer. "If I did it inside the system that would be $20+ million."
"Hey, we hit our $500,000 goal on Kickstarter!" said a delighted Ben Lesnick, community manager at developer Cloud Imperium Games, on Twitter. "Onward to $3 million! New stretch goals and a ships plan SOON!"

http://www.computerandvideogames.com...r-citizen-dev/Consumer PC set-ups already carry more advanced technology than next generation consoles, the creator of Star Citizen has claimed.
Wing commander maestro Chris Roberts said his new space faring game would not be suitable on home consoles due to various memory and processing speed bottlenecks.
"What I was showing [with Star Citizen] you can't do on a current generation console," Roberts told Ars Technica.
"You can do most of it on a next generation console, but I can promise you a top-end PC now is already more powerful than what a next generation console is going to be.
"You can't do that much with 512MB [of console RAM], so that constrains a lot of your game design. If I'm building a PC game, I'm going 'yeah, you need 4GB on your machine.' Of course you're not going to get all 4GB because Windows is a hungry beast, but you're getting a lot more than 512MB so it kinds of open up what you can do, what you can fit in memory at the same time, and it changes your level of ambition."
The Star Citizen project has been in production for about 12 months at Cloud Imperium, a Los Angeles based studio founded by Roberts in April 2011.
In the years between his work at games studios, Roberts' career ventured into Hollywood where he worked as director and producer on films including Lucky Number Slevin, The Jacket and The Punisher.
He said he returned to games because the tech has "moved on enough where I felt like I could do a whole different level of fidelity in terms of simulation of the world and the visuals I could deliver on that".
"I was always very frustrated by that in the past. Now I'm sort of looking at stuff that I could do in real time that, when I was making the Wing Commander movie, we needed millions of dollars of SGI machines and days to render. That's very exciting to me, because that's sort of my fantasy, playing something that has the visual fidelity of a movie to it."
Star Citizen is being built on CryEngine 3, a game engine now three years old.
Roberts said that the game's total investment will reach $10 million due to private VC partnerships, though two separate crowdfunding projects have already provided $3.5 million of his target.
The online space sim will operate on a Guild Wars 2-style model, Roberts said, meaning that a subscription is not necessary. The base game, DLC and various in-game items can be purchased on a one-off basis.

So, the kickstarter is done and the count is in
http://www.vg247.com/2012/11/20/star...h-6-2-million/
If it had all been on Kickstarter, it'd be the highest funded game, and the 3rd highest Kickstarter overall.Star Citizen has completed its crowd-funding period with a record-breaking $6,271,458 raised. Of this total, $2,134,374 was garnered through Kickstarter and another $4,137,084 directly through Roberts Space Industries. In total, 90,185 backers contributed at an average of just over $69 each.
“Our gratitude is immeasurable; we owe you our livelihoods and will not soon forget it,” the developer said in an update to the Kickstarter page.
From here on in, the project will still accept donations, but new backers will miss out most of the rewards offered earlier. Roberts Space Industries will become a community-focused site, and will eventually allow only backers from either stream entry to regularly scheduled updates.
Backers met and exceeded every stretch goal the company could think up, hugely surpassing its now modest-seeming $2 million goal.
Star Citizen will also receive traditional investor funding, and aims to deliver the most ambitious PC space sim yet conceived. Check out some new footage released yesterday. In addition to the core game, Star Citizen will include a multiplayer military title called Squadron 42. Both are expected in late 2014.

Star Citizen passes $10m, motion capture studio to be openedhttp://www.gamesindustry.biz/article...o-to-be-openedChris Roberts' Cloud Imperium Games has set a record for crowd funding games.
It was only a little over a month ago that Star Citizen reached the $9 million mark in crowd funding via Kickstarter and the Roberts Space Industries website. The space sim has shown no signs of slowing down and has already raised another $1 million, passing the $10 million mark, which makes it the most raised for any game via crowd funding. The news also means that funds will be used by Cloud Imperium to open a new motion capture studio.
It took the game eight months to reach $10 million with the majority ($7.8 million) of the funds being generated directly via the Star Citizen website. $3.7 million has been raised since the official campaign ended back in November, but gamers can continue to donate, upgrade and purchase ships, subscribe to newsletters and developer forums and manage their accounts.
"The Star Citizen community has been nothing short of phenomenal in its support of this project," said Roberts. "And for that we are eternally grateful. Our backers are providing us the opportunity to make a game that not only we want to create but one that they want as well. The beauty of crowd funding is that the crowd is involved every step of the way, not just with their financial resources but with their regular feedback and opinions as well."
"We have raised a lot of money from the crowd, which is unheard of in our industry," continued Roberts. "But we don't plan on slowing down. In another week we'll be unveiling new pictures and a special promotional sale for yet another ship in Star Citizen complete with sales brochure and commercial video. And at the end of the month we'll be launching our new Star Citizen website that will have a more robust e-commerce system that allows fans to upgrade and modify their pledges, purchase add-ons and manage account info. And it's going to better represent the world of Star Citizen, so it's going to look amazing."
Roberts is best known for his Wing Commander series from the 1990s. He left the industry for some time to pursue a Hollywood production career but now he's back leading development of the PC-based game Star Citizen, which is in development at studios in Austin, Texas and Santa Monica, California.

not only that but they already started mailing out some of the cool bonus stuff. i got my white Citizen Card (for the cheapest pre-purchase there was) last week. It's pretty neat, tbh.
my god I found out about this game the other day and it looks amazing. I highly recommend checking it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzcelfmiRMg. Also here is the site https://robertsspaceindustries.com/
As you guys know they are useing cry engine 3 but they will be creating their own AI and netcode because apparently cry lacks.
Just recently purchased a 325a package cant wait for this game. Apparently the dogfighting module should come out mid april after pax east.
The recent funding goal at 41 million is going towards R&D for on planet fps stuff which cryengine is perfect for.It is really nice they have the funding to get this going so early. Im just glad that this game will be going for a long time and push the limits of gaming.
some mining stuff :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF7DGn7erl4
