Ubisoft has announced plans for its Assassin's Creed film to begin shooting next summer, after the recent signing of X-Men and Prometheus star Michael Fassbender.

The developer wants a director, cast and script in place by next summer, Variety reported. A Ubisoft press release stated production was now being fast-tracked, with work on a screenplay to begin immediately.

A partnership with production studio New Regency has also been finalised. Key to the studio deal is an extra chunk of change to help Ubisoft foot the project's bill. New Regency has also agreed to let Ubisoft keep close creative control on the film, meaning fans will see familiar characters and elements reappear.

"We don't want to make games just for the sake of movies," Ubisoft Motion Pictures boss Jean-Julien Baronnet said. "We want to make them in concert with the games.

"Bringing aboard New Regency's renowned production and distribution expertise while maintaining our own creative and financial flexibility ensures that Assassin's Creed will be a high-quality film that respects the lore and fans of the video game franchise."

Ubisoft hopes to launch the film alongside a future Assassin's Creed game. If shooting begins next summer, does this mean a November 2014 launch?

Ubisoft Motion Pictures is also developing a Rabbids TV series, plus feature-length films based on the Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon franchises.

AC 4 in 2014? Given that this is supposed to be the last game in Desmond's story, having a movie and game featuring a new character would be a good way to expand the universe.

Adam Cooper and Bill Collage to rewrite the script
Assassin’s Creed movie production appears to be rolling along, as the script is now entering a new draft, courtesy of newly-hired writers Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, the same duo behind Darren Aronofsky’s The General, an upcoming film about the life of George Washington.

That’s according to Deadline, which claims that the pair were brought in to re-write the draft, which was penned by The Wolverine scribe Scott Frank and British playwright Michael Lesslie.

As <redacted> rightly states, this is nothing to be feared and is common practice in the film industry. It means that production is moving, but we’re yet to find out what game the film is based on, and which Assassin Michael Fassbender will play.

I wonder if they are gonna have Fassbender play both Desmond and Altair or get someone else for that role. Or...ya know, would it be easier to skip Altair and use Ezio instead?

Well at least something Assassin's Creed related can have the release date pushed back if it's not ready.

Picture released of Fassbender in costume along with some new details. Apparently he's playing an all new modern day character with an all new assassin ancestor from Spain. His assassin robes kind of look like a cross between Edward's and Arno's.

While an all new character a twitter Q&A revealed that the story will take place within the existing continuity set up by the video games and it's possible some characters from the video game will appear. Having not played all of Unity yet I would guess that might be Shawn and Rebecca in the present day period.

Oh god no, they should drop that shit all together. The franchise would've been so much better without it

Fassbender’s character is named Callum Lynch, who hasn’t appeared in the “Assassin’s Creed” videogames but was created just for the film. Lynch learns he has family ties to a secret assassin society, and his connection lets him experience the story of his ancestor, Aguilar, who lived in Spain in the 15th century. His experiences with Aguilar help him battle the Knights Templar in the present day, according to Yahoo News.
    Definitely being kept around.

I'm ok with present day/Animus back and forth, but I think they will lose most audiences if they try to bring in the advanced pre-civilization stuff.

Is Inspired by Batman Begins and Blade Runner, Past & Present scenes will transition easier than the video games
We told [Fassbender] that we were going to build the project together, that we have an enormous brand and we want to make a film modelled on features like Batman Begins or Blade Runner. That’s what we’re aiming for. We promised him that he could work with the scriptwriters, that we were going to bring him into all the key creative choices.

Assassin was complicated to develop, because you’re working with two time periods, one contemporary and one historical. With two heros, as you have Callum, the modern-day hero, and his ancestor Aguilar, who have two parallel stories which meet up. Generally in a film, you only have one hero. And with the link between the past and the present, you can’t have one of the stories taking precedence over the other. So structurally, it’s very complicated.
