At last, a sequel to Dreamfall: The Longest Journey

Adventure game, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, is getting a sequel six years after its release, publisher, Funcom, announced this morning. The sequel will be titled Dreamfall Chapters.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey itself is a sequel to 1999’s The Longest Journey, a very popular PC adventure game that takes place across two worlds—one based on science and the other on magic. The Longest Journey was designed by game designer, Ragnar Tørnquist, and featured a character named April Ryan as its protagonist. For Dreamfall, Zoë Castillo took over as protagonist.

Dreamfall Chapters will be developed by Tørnquist’s Red Thread Games studio, who have licensed the rights to the universe of The Longest Journey franchise. Tørnquist will spearhead development of the new game, which is currently in pre-production.

It should be noted that Funcom still own the intellectual property rights to The Longest Journey franchise. However, with the studio focused on online games, their strong relationship with Tørnquist allowed for the licensing deal to come through.

“I’m very excited to finally have the opportunity to continue the ‘The Longest Journey’ saga,” said Tørnquist. “Ever since we ended Dreamfall on a nail-biting cliffhanger, players have been rightfully demanding a sequel, and my deal with Funcom will finally make that possible.

Maybe if they ported the damn things to Android/iOS, since I tend to ignore point&clicks on my gaming PC, even though I own about 20 of them on Steam.

Good to see the recent resurgence of P&C adventures hasn't withered out yet.

Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey has met its funding goal, developer Red Thread Games announced on Kickstarter. The goal was met with 21 days to go with 13,103 backers pledging $854,201 towards the $800,000 goal. A $900,000 stretch goal has been added, which will ensure the release of Mac and Linux versions, and the $950,000 goal will include the Loremaster. Should funding hit $1 million, the length of the of the game will be extended. More stretch goals will be announced as funding progresses.

The Kickstarter campaign for Dreamfall Chapters, Read Thread Games’ sequel to Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, has ended today with $1,538,425 backed by supporters, succeeding its goal of $850,000 by over $688,000.

Having past the $1.5 million stretch goal, the game will include content initially cut due to the game’s then-lower budget. This includes “a couple of locations, some intriguing characters and conversations, a number of smaller scenes and intimate moments, a few puzzles, a bunch of minor story beats, and a hatful of funsies.”

Dreamfall Chapters is due out for PC between May and November 2015.

Red Thread Games and Deep Silver release a new trailer for the upcoming 3D Adventure Dreamfall Chapters which is due to launch on PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system and Xbox One the all-in-one entertainment system by Microsoft on May 5th across Europe.
