Giving people rights that force other to people to involuntarily do things are rights in label only.

    Anti-American biases? The fucking UN?

The opposition was led by tea party favorite Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, who argued that the treaty by its very nature threatened U.S. sovereignty. Specifically he expressed concerns that the treaty could lead to the state, rather than parents, determining what was in the best interest of disabled children in such areas as home schooling, and that language in the treaty guaranteeing the disabled equal rights to reproductive health care could lead to abortions.
    Oh for fuck's...

"Sorry, disabled people, can't give you equal rights. Could (somehow) lead to abortions and abortions make the bebyjizziz throw a tantrum."
Theocratic aspiration+a huge stretch to justify inequality, that's just fucking low. Fuck their baby jesus with a fencepost, then it'll have reason to be butthurt.

Oh, well, at least we ratified it. In 2009. And included it in the constitution with the uninanimity of the senate's institutional commission's approval.
    Full text of the bill.

Edit: unrelatedly, Day, your gif is from a BBC quiz show called Pointless.
Since it's about obscure pop culture knowledge no one cares about ("name a Donna Summer track that reached a top 10 position in the charts but nobody remembers because who the fuck would?"), I'd guess the gif is satirising the show itself.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Here's what the batshit false prophet Rick Santorum said.

Like, what the fuck is wrong with people. This was a small, stupid token gesture that acknowledged that the US led the world on rights for the disabled, and now it's a political farce. This is why the world hates us.

    Argh.
I am seriously facepalming reading that article...how can anyone be this stupid and childish...

I read your story, and the only basis for what was in the treaty was this, "the treaty requires no changes in U.S. law, that a committee created by the treaty to make recommendations has no power to change laws and that the treaty cannot serve as a basis for a lawsuit in U.S. courts." If that's true, why does it matter that we didn't ratify it? So American's abroad can allegedly have better conditions? I'll bet there's more to it than that.

I hate bureaucracy as much as the next guy but this is nothing more than a platform for political posturing.

Did you just imply that you missed the point? This treaty does nothing for Americans at home, according to John Kerry. At best, it encourages other countries to pass an ADA type law, to help Americans abroad. We don't need a treaty to encourage that.

Take your blinders off, there is much better Republican hate fodder out there for liberals.

of course the treaty does nothing for americans at home because we already have said laws. Other countries don't. Explain to me why it's a bad thing to encourage other countries to have similar laws.

There was the point of the whole thing. Didn't hurt American in any way and could only help others in the world, yet we didn't ratify it for political reasons.

Wow, that was the god-damned most stupid comparison I have heard today. Congrats.

The UN treaty was based on the US law.

It's a bad law with a lot of crappy consequences. Business owners get fucked over on a regular basis by its regulations and the definition of 'handicapped' is so loose it's an embarrassment.

    long version:

I find none of this to be remotely compelling, since it's more Libertarian nonsense.

P&T:BS! went down hill when they decided to become the mouth piece for cato institute. I've not seen them be transparent about their bias either.
