Kain didn't need customization. He could either hit things, or hit things harder.

I see your point, though, but I just can't shake the deliciousness of old-school Sprite Nostalgia. Even with the amazing PSP super-HD upgrade, they redid the sprites, which pissed me off, because the new Kain looks like ass compared to his perfect SNES sprite. Some characters, however, look better this time around.

Oh god the PSP designs...I forget where I posted about them before but "rounded technicolor bobble-head vomit" sums up my impression of them pretty well.

I didn't quite mind what they did with the PSP redesign... at least they added a bit more dimension to them instead of just upping the resolution. The monster illustrations are vastly superior though.

The worst is whey they "HD" the classic 8-bit sprites and you end up with something extremely generic. Final Fantasy Dimensions, I'm looking at you.

Monster illustrations are amazing, but don't fucking touch Kain. I'm serious, even when they made Bartz's Dragoon Sprite for FFV, it looked like ass compared to Kain's. The color scheme, the red eye; everything is perfect. Stop fucking touching it!

And go back and return Paladin Cecil's original combat animation; I miss him drawing his sword upon activation.

    /FF4 Fanboy mode engaged.

I actually didn't mind the FF4 PSP graphics either ;o

It felt like the design team was outsourced to Fisher Price.

Bright, shiny, colorful, no sharp edges.

    Spoiler: show
Also I forgot to mention the goddamn piercing beep sound effect that happened EVERY TIME you moved the cursor and was WAY LOUDER than the actual music and SFX in the game. That shit gave me headaches.

Maybe they can't port the Complete Collection yet. It does say "Only on Playstation" in the US, doesn't it?
There could be some sort of deal with Sony there, who knows.
Then again... they did include the PS1 version in the Anniversary Collection so I don't know wtf is going on anymore.
Just gimme 3D remakes of V and VI on 3DS and HD2D ports on Vita SE and all is forgiven.

  10. #30

It's completely backward to make 3D games for the inferior console and 2D remakes for the superior.

I wish they'd just forget the goddamn DS. If the game doesn't benefit greatly from the dual screens or touch interface there's no reason to have 2 small shitty screens and inferior hardware over 1 big HD screen with much, much better hardware.

    i agree to that..
if its gonna be 3d might as well put it on the Vita because its way better for that kind thing.

that said, I'd rather HD2D for V and VI if it ever comes out because
    1) it'll probably end up being truer to the original in terms of visual flavor but still retain the graphic quality of a remaster.
    2) some areas transition horribly into 3d (especially with all the hidden walls and stuff)
    3) it presents you with a 'what-if' scenario. if V or VI was made in 2D today, it'd have turned out like this.

HD2D is pretty much the limit of what they can achieve on a 2D level.
They could go much further in the 3D versions, which for me leaves much to be desired...

i'm obviously biased, but I really liked what they did with HD2D ff1,2 and 4.. so i'd like to see it happen with 3, 5 and 6. altho 3 seems totally unlikely now, unless they come up with a sequel or something.

HD2D brings the question though: Do you try to maintain the original 'sprite' look (and fail horribly like Dimensions), or do you actually go full out with the huge amount of pixels you now have available, and make these nicely detailed human characters?

Of course for the latter, it'll look like shit if you maintain the 3-frame walk cycle......, higher definition comes with higher expectations. Go half-and-half, 3d models, 2d backdrops?

[EDIT] Actually, I could go for half-and-half. Just throw the Chaos Rings 2 engine at it and make it a full fledged graphical remake with pre-rendered locales, rather than higher-quality 2d tiles.

Play IV, pick Cecil, pick Fight, look at sprite. He's clearly drawing his sword. I miss that sprite, and didn't like seeing it changed.

  14. #34

I'm not seeing it, his sword just kinda materializes in his hand like everyone else.

He has an extra frame where his hand is where a sword would be drawn from.

Hopefully the in-game FPS is better than what it displayed in that trailer.
