According to this it means the game will be released somewhere around April-June and it's safe to assume it's gonna get delayed until July-August like most video games releases.

Yeah, the wording on that page and with the tweet is a bit confusing, but I think it just means that Legacy members will probably not have to apply. Though I suppose filling out the beta app couldn't hurt.

Look at it this way: maybe the guys will get confused and give you 2 beta accounts so you can dual-box the beta. Not very likely, but hey a guy can dream right?

The word "created" is confusing to me too, and if taken literally that seems like a strange policy to have. It would serve a purpose of having some new players mid-level at launch, but I can't imagine they'd do the work of keeping track of progress on some characters and not on others. I've got to assume that will be clarified one way or the other. I'd also rather progress not be saved, I just don't think that serves a point in a beta unless they are very confident that everything is working as intended. Maybe they think that will be a good hook to help some testers become subscribers.

I think the last phase will just be treated as the "free trial period" for people. Of course anyone that buys the game and older players will get their 30 free days, but others will be able test it this way without paying.

Surely character data won't be transferred from phase 4 to retail. Think about the effects on the economy. You could transfer 10mil gil to your new character and take it to those new servers where V1 characters aren't allowed. Unless they are going to separate phase 4 beta out the same way.

How could you read it as anything else?

Characters created during this phase will be carried over to the official release.

Just keep in mind that they also noted it with:

*Circumstance may necessitate the deletion of character data.

So, if any game/economy-breaking exploit is found during Phase-4, they'll probably wipe data at the end of it. They also will probably not allow characters created during Phase-4 to transfer to the "fresh" new-character-only servers.

That should cover all of the bases~

But they will have to separate the servers from phase 4 and have those as the retail servers. Nothing wrong with that I suppose.

Likely you will still choose new servers at launch. They already said there will be new fresh servers that you cannot put old characters on.

Pretty nice of them... but now people are going to jump into Phase-4 with the idea in their head that it's pretty much early release for them and probably push through content/leveling/etc. to get a head start. Then there's the potential character wipe that will cause a torrent of tears to burst forth from the official forums engulfing the earth in our very own Umbral era.
