    FFXI install on new PC

I just got myself a new laptop, I copied folders from my PC to my USB HDD, Playonline, motionjoy, windower. I was hoping I could simply copy them on to my new laptop and go to town. Appears this is not the case. I try to launch windower, it says FFXI not installed. I try to launch POL, it says cannot read install path or something of this sort. What do I need to do? Please help!

Install FFXI from whatever you have, then copy over everything (saves having to update the game). That or find out which registry values and programs FFXI depends on that are all created/installed during setup and manually create/install them, haven't had a FFXI account in years so don't know how hard it would be (some games include setup .exe in the program folder itself)

Also copy the user folder to new laptop if you haven't saved your macros online.

Okay, so pretty much what the problem is, even though I have all the files, this laptop doesn't technically have FFXI installed? Trying to download the thing from the 14 day free trial I found online, then hoping I can just move all my files into the folder it creates once done.

#Edit: And yea... I haven't saved my macros online in a long time.

Nope, just copying the files won't work, because during installation it edits the registry values for FFXI on your laptop. Without that, normal shortcut or windower won't find FFXI.

Simply copying over can't work since the installers create a basic structure in the registry and also register a few DLLs in the system that are needed for playing. So just do what it described in Appie's link, install Vista-POL, FFXI and all expansions you have (yes, that takes time, but it's needed) and THEN copy your backup folder over the fresh install and let it "patch" to recognize the new files.

Can not get any torrents to download. Grrrr. Downloaded POL straight from playonline. All that part works, right up to FFXI is not installed. Is there literally just like an install file you can download somewhere to run, then put all the files there?

I tried making a new .reg and .bat file that I found someone on alla mention from back in 2007. I made sure the paths and everything were correct, but ffxi is still not showing up as installed. Is anyone good with doing this, making your PC think you've installed the game?

You said that you've made the .REG and .BAT. Would you mind copying and pasting the entire contents of both files here? Also, write out the file path you're launching them from (e.g., the directory the BAT file is in when you run it), and explain where your FINAL FANTASY XI folders are in relation to that. If you're not familiar with this, you can open REG and BAT files both in Notepad (or any other word editor, really).

To make copying and pasting the contents on this board easier, I recommend surrounding them with a spoiler tag, and then using code tags for the contents.

I've tried changing the "\\" to just "\". The .BAT file is saved in PlayOnline SquareEnix folder, so it appears in the folder where the Final Fantasy XI, PlayOnline and TertaMaster folders are.

My .Bat was one line, but I found this one, so gave it a shot also.

After looking at this, I realized there was a double quote before one the folder paths ""C:/
Took it out, re-ran both files, now when I try to launch POL I get "PlayOnline Viewer installation cannot write to specified destination folder. Please check your access privileges." I've tried running POL as administrator too. I really wish I wasn't in Japan on this crap wifi in this hotel. Going to change my .Bat to the one line .bat file I was using before now that I caught that double quote... If it was even doing anything.

Here is the link and what I was going off of from Alla.
    http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.htm...217382813&h=50

If all else fails, I will be back in the states in 5 days, will just buy another copy of the game.

#Edit: Changed the .Bat back to the single line one, POL launches again, still no FFXI installed. Looks like I'll be playing King's Field these remaining days in Japan. :/

It's okay Xerodok. I'll be back stateside in two more days. Was hoping to play while I'm stuck in Yokota, Japan for 5 days. I know, Japan for 5 days and you want to play FFXI!? I lived in Japan for 3 years already.

I'll be busy for the remainder of my vacation, but I will get this figured out eventually.

Got it to work. Went to the 14 day free trial, downloaded the 2GB file, ran the installer, then simply moved all my files over. Windower working on Win8. Hurray. But Win8 sure does suck balls. Why no start menu!?

Zoo; I know and I've heard. Unfortunately the only way to bring start menu back is with third party apps. It's one of the reasons I'm thinking about getting 7 for a new pc (I build my own pcs) and not 8. ^^
