They send out a notice saying they accepted the return, but normally you don't see that on the IRS site for a couple days.

I mentioned this before in a previous thread but someone put doubt in my mind and I'm afraid I'll have the wrath of the IRS on my shoulders sometime.

I moved here in September, Visa started then. Started work in late October. Between then and December I earned 3000$.

For the 2012 year, do I have to do anything? Sign my name to a piece of paper, send smoke signals out, anything? If it means anything I'm a J1 visa from Ireland. So I was told the only taxes i'd have to pay were Federal and state.

Finally, moving forward, what am I to do about this year? I have no idea if I should be sending cheques to the IRS monthly, quarterly, yearly etc. Currently, I get my pay and just squirrel away 15% of it in a savings account as an arbitrary number. I earn 16$ an hour and generally work anywhere from 30-40 hours a week in NYC.

I tried navigating the IRS website, asked people at work and I'm still none the wiser. I'm hoping to apply for sponsorship for the next 3 years, so I cant really mess up on this.

    Thanks a whole bunch!

Usually your salary will be taxed before it getting into your hand, unless there is some agreement between US and Ireland which you are tax exemption for the first X amount of income. I knew that like China and Egypt they are not taxed until they earn more than 5000 in that particular year.

So, what you can do is check your previous salary if you have been taxed or not. Or, you can just check the W-2 form, which I'm suppose you will get it by mail, or by e-file from your institution (I assume is either college or research institute since you mention you are in J1). If there is an indicated you have paid Y amount of tax, then you are fine and don't worry about had to pay to IRS, unless you have some extra income such as share holder and etc. In this state, you may want think about to file a tax return to see if you can get some money back, you can check how to file this with the financial office of your institution.

Should go in the random fail thread, but I just saw the saddest thing. This girl is 19 years old and I used to work with her when I sold cell phones. She worked as a cashier @ staples, and dropped out of H.S. She lives with her mom and her two brothers. This girl just posted on FB she is receiving 10,000$ for her tax return, and I poke interest as to exactly how. She posted this 10k brag, and it was followed by this random chick ( I didn't notice her last name), saying congrats: "Your phone will be ringing like crazy now... with all the loser friends you have...BE CAREFUL!!". I click on this girl and it's this slutty, balding nasty looking chick; ignored. She says she is claiming her brothers as dependents, and no one else is claiming them, to which this disgusting chick responds: "I'm not claiming them", and I finally noticed this girl was her mom. I said, totally out of line: "Your daughter provides more than half of your kids financial support?" To which she replies, and I quote: "YUP!! Liven lyfe da way I want too, my daugter is steppin in givin me a break from worrying about raisin my kids the past year". Just made me want to stab this hoe, /rantoff.

    Pic of the mom:
    Spoiler: show

My job although I work 30-40 hours a week is considered free Lance so Ive always received my gross income. Since its considered self employed, I've yet to give a penny to the tax man. I asked at work. ..But like I said they are useless. Im more worried about moving forward since I'll be earning alot in this tax year ( relative to last year)

Bump if possible! I'm applying for a 3 year visa to the states and I'm expecting the Tax man to appear and just destroy my chances of getting it. One thing I omitted is that I'm considered self employed because my company are cheap bastards and dont want to pay my taxes or give me healthcare.

If the IRS wanted additional record like Birth Certificates and doctors records for the EIC and you provide that information how long does it take for them to process all that and what happens next? As in do they do it through the mail only or will my money still be direct deposited the way I originally had it set up?

I'm only getting back a total $1124 back and I paid nearly 18k in federal taxes alone last year.

How are some of you guys getting 5k back? If it has anything to do with me being single with no kids then that's the only thing I can think of. I'm still paying my student loans which amounts to about 105k left and my gross income is 81k.
