._. That is super depressing, picked a random paragraph from a reading I have to do, obviously = oblivious when listening to it again. I can't read silently either though and never have been able to, I average about 5 mins a page when reading regular books such as The Hobbit, not outloud, but to myself. For the last year or two since I have had to do a lot of reading but I struggle significantly at it I have been trying to use text to speech software to get through it if I can get a hold of a digital copy of something. Never been diagnosed as being dyslexic but always wondered if I had some mild form of it...

Edit: Actually, now that I think about it... one of my schools (I changed schools 10 times by 9th grade), was absolutely terrible, and in that school the only reading out loud was by the teachers. I'm not sure what else to expect from a school where the most popular teacher is the one who would fling boogers at kids who talked out of turn. I just never thought of that school's terrible standards as normal.

Consider yourself lucky. You were probably in one of the most effective schools (or district/state) in America at the time. It's unfortunate but like I said, at the time it wasn't highly valued.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

My school made us read out loud too (born 1980), and now they discourage it because they don't want to embarrass the kids that go slowly...

Yeah that whole thing about it not being around in the earlier days and being around now seems backwards. I can't tell you how many kids that I had to hear brief shit who couldn't speak worth a fuck.

Edit: And out of that list that's the one that got chosen, lol. So many goodies.

My first day of student teaching last year I was shocked as shit my guide teacher used the textbook's audio tape for all our stories. I was like, "shouldn't we let kid's read?" he said it slows down the lessons too much and you don't want to embarrass them, so the tape is better. Thought he was insane, but then found out all my classes were parroting the same thing.

I still tried to let kids volunteer to read now and then but ya...

This is very true. Few things were more frustrating than being in class with someone reading at 1/10 the rate i could myself. Of course, maybe if students were made to read out loud more often, it wouldn't be a problem, but since they weren't, it was a huge waste of time to have half the kids read anything.
