You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

How do you like to keep your personal photos/videos safe?

My hubby and I have been trying to generate ideas on what to do with all our photos and videos. I am completely paranoid about making sure we don't lose them. Currently, everything we take with our phones + tablet get sent to a drop box, but in under a year we've almost capped it out. Now, we could increase the space but I feel that is a small band-aid on a huge problem as in a few years at this rate we'll be paying an arm an a leg for all the space we'd need.

We've thought of saving them onto discs or a hard drive, but I feel like that isn't enough. I keep thinking how my parents kept all our home videos on this single VHS tape, and now they can't find it. As well, most of our photo albums have gone missing. I have a few friends who have told me similar situations.

I know I probably shouldn't panic, and if we lose them we lose them, but I am super nostalgic, and it makes me kinda sad I'll never get to show my kids what I was like when I was little, and I'd like to look back on them myself.

Anyway, figured I'd see if anyone has any interesting ideas we might not have thought about, that way we can better decide on what we want to do.

I'd suggest like a yearly or six month backup to a hard format like dvd, put it in a hard case, and keep the case somewhere safe like a firesafe or if you want to go extreme, bank security box or something along those lines.

How large is the dropbox you're uploading to? You could just cycle through google drive accounts (5GB a piece) - all you need is a new login when you fill one up.

I don't know if this speaks to me being dumb or a technological/generational gap, but my first thought when reading the topic was "duh, put your security settings to private". Actual, physical copies of stuff didn't even enter my mind.

Pretty sure ours is at 55 GB atm. Think when we signed up they did a deal that gave us an extra 50 for free for the first year. So ya, doing about 50g worth of pics/videos a year is going to add up fast. And that would be wayyyyyyy too many emails to keep track off.

After an incident or two involving much of my electronic data being erased, I pretty much take the paranoid route. I started with 2 external hard drives. I would only use one, but every month (or sooner if I acquired a large amount of material) I'd copy it to the 2nd. When I run out of space, I just upgrade the drives and use the older ones as storage for specific kinds while maintaining everything on the most current. For the most part, the older drives just sit in the back of a closet, but it's not like I'd be able to sell them.

Also. I am not a technophobe by any means. But fuck clouds.

Edit: Depending on how much you already have, you could probably do the above pretty cheap with thumb drives. Think I saw a thing that was 64GB for 16 bucks or something?

External HDs. They're cheap these days, and I haven't ever had one break. Plenty of different sizes, also portable. You won't misplace it like a USB stick. Reusable. Etc.

The big thing is I take a lot of videos, and that's really what's killing us on space. D:

[edit] Any recommendations on fireproof safes? I've never bought one before and would have no idea on what I should get, or if it even matters.

Inevitably hard drives will fail, why I prefer hard media for anything I don't want to risk ever losing.

Encrypted external drive. Throw it in a firesafe with a decent "rating". If you are super ocd you can back them up on two separate drives, keep one in a fire safe, and one in a safety deposit box at a bank.

Or you can be baller and get one of these

Compress your media. Do you really need HD videos of babby's first puke or bath? Also consider buying a 1-2TB HDD. Reasonably priced and you can remove and keep in a fire-resistant safebox.

haha, thanks, she IS adorable. Technically we're at 91% and she's only 9 months old so ya...gotta squeeze it for the next three months!

Taking her to Disneyland for her birthday so that's gonna just overload everything.
