Need help with a logo, willing to pay.

    Hi All,

My wife started a business last year around September. Fast forward to February, we are happy to say that things are moving right forward. We have our store, renovations are soon going to be complete and she is all too happy.

To give an idea on what I guess I'm looking for ... She is a very popular nail manicurist in NYC specializing in nail art. Now after all is said and done, we need a logo and I don't know jack squat about how I could do something like this ... so I turn to you guys. I spoke to her moments ago and she says that, if possible, the logo should be oval shape. The name of the store is "Oh My Nails!" and the colors that it should incorporate are purple and white.

I don't know what's good price to offer. I guess I'll throw up $50 bucks and see what I get.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I'd hate to agree with him but he's right. Crowd-sourcing is terrible. You end up getting sub-par work and people will do a job that is acceptable but not good. Generally you get ripped off because something you may view as good in actuality is not from a design standpoint.

This is silly. He's under no contract to, for example, take qal's contribution. If someone fronts something his wife approves of and wants, who gives a shit where it came from?

Not only that, it's hard getting into the art field, if someone has talent, giving them an opportunity to show that they put their work to good use (and a company found it worth it) can be a great thing.

I'm in the art field Ksandra. Believe it or not I do have some experience in what i'm speaking of. My issue is (not to say anything bad about his wife) many people are like "Oh hey, this looks cool" or "Hey, that looks pretty good" when actually the design is terrible. More often than not you will receive a much higher quality of work if it is designed by someone who will actually sit down with you and make you something that is very good and effective through communication and rough drafts so to say. From the little information he told us I would have no idea where to start with a logo design that would best fit what they need. Also, do they plan to have this logo branded and extend it from something other than a business sign? Will they be using business cards or mailers eventually? Will they be using any sort of web site or have some sort of online presence. Are the colors limited to a specific purple and white? These are the types of things you can have when you actually meet with someone in person. Although outdated you could pull out a pantone book for example and pick out the exact color scheme they wish to have. You would also be able to pick out a style or font family they wish to design with so yet again, in future applications they'll be ready. With this, they will always have those colors and fonts for whatever future applications they wish to have. They wont be limited around poor design.

Also this right here I take issue with

Not only that, it's hard getting into the art field, if someone has talent, giving them an opportunity to show that they put their work to good use (and a company found it worth it) can be a great thing.
If they do intend to use the logo will multiple applications this is yet another example of designers being screwed over which is the case more often than not today. You may not think so but little things like this do hurt the creative market. It brings up the entire WFH debate.

    ---

Obviously Zigma can have all of these things without actually going to a design company/shop/etc, however, this will give him more information he can use when speaking with any designer. This will both make his job, and the designers job easier and provide better work. He'll be able to know the exact colors the designer will be working with, even moreso if he and his wife picks them out. They'll be able to decide on a font style that they feel works with their business. I have no idea how their business looks, the furnishings they have, etc. Do they want to go with a more modern looking logo? Possibly something more traditional? It's something to think about and it gives them options to work with so if in the future his wife wants business cards for example they will actually be able to use the logo they're paying for now rather than paying for yet another new logo to be designed.

I've had to rebuild someones logo from the ground up multiple times because the fonts used and colors used on multiple designed aspects didn't match each other and didn't work well together.
