    T-shirt making?

I'm going to try to get some shirts made for my upcoming fighting game tournament so my team and others can buy it. However, I really don't know anything about the process other than it's expensive and I need to find the most cost effective way of doing it. What have you guys done in the past with it? I'm going to be talking to local screen printing shops this week and seeing what they offer pricewise.

I'm wanting a 2 color logo printed on American Apparel shirts. So far the colors that work well with the logo are heather grey and yellow. Anyone have advice?

    so far: the cheapest place i've found is zazzle for 40 shirts. 7 sm, 10 m, 10 l, 7 xl, 3 xxl, 2 xxxl

We ordered $1000 worth of T-shirts for my uni club, at $10 per shirt from a local shop. It came to that price by using one color, and we could have stuff on both sides. I remember if we wanted 2 colours, it would've jumped to $20 per shirt or something ridiculous.

So you had 100 shirts done?

I could do the entire logo in shades of white but I don't want to do that.

Could always get the T-shirts in Red and use the background as the colour inside the letters (just have a white outline around letters)

Do you really believe that the term "metrosexual" represents a fad that's passed? If so, I have to wonder if you've ever been to any major metropolitan areas, particularly those with evident varieties in fashion sensibilities.

Regardless, to provide some contribution beyond commentary:

There are a variety of online shirt makers, and this is one that I'm aware of that's both trustworthy and capable of creating good product.

I personally don't believe you'll find anything local that's a better deal overall than something online, but if you prefer to go local regardless, my best suggestion would be to cruise Yelp and Google for reviews.

Before Mazmaz went all Mazmaz, he actually had a fairly decent idea. If you want to keep the red, you could do the printing in white, and then just have a thin outline around the text you want to be red, and get red shirts. That would reduce costs by a fairly decent amount. And also open up Star Trek references. Although, how much that matters probably depends somewhat on what size your group is. If it's a small group, more expensive shirts may be more acceptable.

I would look somewhere local first. For the type of shirt you want you could go 2 routes, thermal print on the shirt, which might end up being cheaper but would result in a shitty shirt or getting someone to screen print them. I'm sure there are people in your town doing it out of their garages (I make art prints in my bedroom). Since you're using american apparel I would go with screen printing, it might be a bit more but the shirts will last and you could easily sell them for a bit more.

Now that logo / design on there is um. . nice.

On a serious note, how would one go about making their own t-shirt/hoodie for a single individual? Any decent website to point to?

Me and my lady do some DIY screen prints that come out well. 2 colors is about the max that you want to use for DIY home shit.

We buy wooden frames from Goodwill for 50 cents and use them to stretch silk screen over. Then you just need some photo emulsion you can buy at any art store. You print out the design (what you want ink) in black and white, goo the screen, let it dry in darkness. Use vegatable oil on your printout to make a transparency. (it's crazy how good that works). Then you expose the screen to sunlight for a few minutes. Everything not black gets super dried into the screen, everything black will wash out... then you have your base screen. Just a matter of pulling fabric paint across it while keeping it still at that point.

I could write up a little step by step if anyone is really super interested. It's so much easier than it sounds and is actually a lot of fun.

Wish I had better example pics, but heres one I made like 2 years ago, just now starting to fade out a little:

I got some softball t-shirts made for the guys at work last year. We actually have an athletic outfitter right behind out office who commonly makes shirts for stuff like this. I forget how much they charged, but it was something like $8 a shit + $120 or something for the m to use our design (basically to cover the printing costs I guess). We had 20-something shirts made so it ended up less than $15 a pop. I threw together the logo real quick in photoshop and they got them all made over the weekend.

Depending on how many you want made, you could just do it yourself. Any art store sells those iron-on sheets, you can just cut out shapes and iron them on the shirts. I did that in high school for an intramural football team and it lasted me 2 years. Or if you're looking to use multiple colors, checkout the art department at your local shitty community college. Most places have silk screens they'll allow you to use, and might not even charge you if you supply the materials.

Your best bet is to find the prices of small print/silk screen/heat transfer shops, they generally have lower prices because they need to do so to stay in business. These types of shops can't do huge quantities but they're generally cheaper per shirt. You might have some luck checking your yellow pages to find some different options from local shops.
