2013 NHL Playoff Thread: BITCH WE MIGHT BE

It's said that April showers bring May flowers, but then what do May flowers bring? Golf outings for Maple Leafs players, typically. But not this year. This year of course, the Leafs were saved by a season that was simply too short for them to fail. While not quite living up to my expectations of getting their usual 30 wins, they still managed to complete their annual tradition of looking like a playoff team for half a season.

And of course, the Leafs weren't the only team saved from their own choking by the shortened season. The Minnesota Wild managed to avoid last year's epic late-season meltdown, and held off the powerhouse juggernaut Blue Jackets on the last day of the season to squeak into this year's tournament. Despite dozens of Ohio hockey fans gathering in Port Jeuno, there will unfortunately be no Lumbus run this year. The teams that did make it, however, left us with several interesting matchups; and then also the Eastern Conference ones.

    Eastern Conference

#1 Pittsburgh Penguins vs. #8 New York Islanders

The Teams: The Penguins, led by ubercoach/I think the dad from Heroes Dan Bylsma, were able to stand fast despite another prolonged injury to Sidney Crosby by relying on some of their second-string depth no-name role players coming off of the bench like Evgeni Malkin, James Morrow, Jarome Iginla, and James Neal. The Islanders were likely a surprise to many seeing as how I don't think they've made the playoffs since the 80's. They're led by several up-and-coming players such as John Tavares, Michael Grabner, and uh, John Tavares. Their defense has been shored up by some solid goaltending from Evgeni Nabokov, whose play has been greatly improved thanks to the five-hole protection provided by one of the severed limbs of Rick DiPietro still sitting in the Islanders' crease.

The Match-up: On paper, the Penguins look like the vastly better team in this match-up. Wait, no, not paper, I meant 'the ice', I get those two mixed up sometimes. The Islanders did not fare very well during the regular season series, going losing 4 of 5 and being outscored 17-9. While not as prevelant in this year's matches, these two teams have in the past few years been known to employ some heavy goonery, so if any games involve either team being blown out late in the game we may see some fireworks.

Player to Watch: Whoever the first one is to punch Pierre McGuire for asking them why Sidney Crosby is so perfect.

Prediction: Penguins in 3, this will be a massacre.

#2 Montreal Canadiens vs. #7 Ottawa Senators

The Teams: This first round match-up is almost a bit of a shame, as these are easily the two most-improved teams in the Conference, possibly in the League since last year, and one of them is going to be sent packing in the first round. The Canadiens hit a bit of a skid towards the end of the season, but still managed to just barely stay atop the Bruins for the Northeast Division title thanks to a last-day win by the Senators. The Senators for their part managed to keep a white-knuckled grip on a playoff berth despite most of their team being injured for most of the year and fielding a roster of players who let's be honest nobody outside of Ottawa has ever heard of. Both of these teams are led by men who deserve serious Jack Adams consideration, it will be interesting to see what decisions are made by the generals on and off the ice.

The Match-up: Only one thing is for certain in this match, and it's that if anyone gets injured in any way on either team, someone's getting the cops called on them.

Player to Watch: It's prime time for P.K. Subban, a likely Norris candidate who will have to prove that he can get past the distractions of things like media scrutiny and calls from Evander Kane on their sweet ballin' money-phones.

Prediction: Despite the miraculous return of Erik Karlsson, the plucky Senators likely don't have the depth to hang in a long series. Montreal à cinq.

#3 Washington Capitals vs. #6 New York Rangers

The Teams: The Caps were able to claw back from a middling start of the season and capture the 3 seed, being able to take advantage of being in the worst division in hockey one last time. The Rangers, who finished with only one less point than the Capitals, have definitely earned their 6 seed thanks to incredibly inconsistent play over the course of the season. While they usually tend to solidify towards the end of the season, they're going to need to gel a bit faster if they want to get out of the first round.

The Match-up: These games might possibly be decided with only 9 skaters on the ice. Washington was the best power play team in the League this year, with Alex Ovechkin riding it all the way to another Rocket Richard trophy. The Rangers for their part, have been one of the least-penalized teams in the league, with their players all living in fear of being Bobby Knighted by coach John Tortarella. They're going to have to maintain their discipline throughout the series, as the Capitals will be poised to take advantage of any mistakes.

Player to Watch: While it might be a cliché pick, this most definitely has to be Alexander Ovechkin. He overcame a mediocre start of the year to finish the league's top goal-scorer. After being pretty much written off in the old Crosby/Ovechkin argument, he could re-kindle those flames with a strong playoff performance.

Prediction: While this should be a hard-fought series, the Capitals have playoff rabbit's foot Joel Ward on their side. Washington in 7.

#4 Boston Bruins vs. #5 Toronto Maple Leafs

The Teams: The Bruins were very strong again this year despite getting hosed on the Iginla deal at the trade deadline. They picked up Jaromir Jagr instead, and his veteran presence has paid solid dividends. The Leafs won't have a lot of time to bask in the glow of finally making it back to the playoffs, as they're going to need to very quickly adapt to Boston's punishing physical playstyle.

The Match-up: Throughout the season the Leafs were more or less able to hold their own against the Bruins. While only winning one of the four matches, all of the games were close and they certainly made Boston work for the wins. Of course, in the playoffs 'close' does not get you anything but an early ride home, so they're going to need to find a way to pull out the tight games in the end if they want their first post-lockout playoff foray to last more than a handful of games.

Player to Watch: This one is probably the most obvious of any playoff matchup, as Phil Kessel faces a great opportunity to once and for all fully clear his name in the Seguin pick trade.

Prediction: The Bruins are just too strong in too many areas. Bruins in 5.

    Western Conference

#1 Chicago Blackhawks vs. #8 Minnesota Wild

The Teams: These two teams had very different paths to the 2013 playoffs, as the Hawks kept their roster virtually unchanged from 2012 and completely dominated the Western Conference during the regular season; while the Wild made easily the two biggest signings of the 2012 offseason, but just barely held on the the 8th seed.

The Matchup: The Wild were able to grab one of three games from the Hawks during the regular season series, and for the most part played Chicago close in all of them. The playoffs are the time for depth and goaltending to shine, however, and it's very questionable if Minnesota can really compare in either category.

Player to Watch: While the Hawks had the best goaltending tandem in the league with Corey Crawford and Ray Emery teaming up to win the Jennings Trophy, Emery has had some injury issues as of late and Crawford may not have the safety net behind him that he had during most of the regular season.

Predictions: The Hawks never really slowed down during the course of the year, and appear to be fully healthy with major cog Dave Bolland expected back. Hawks in 4.

#2 Anaheim Ducks vs. #7 Detroit Red Wings

The Teams: While spending much of the season in the shadow of Chicago, Anaheim very consistently won most of their games, and were never once really challenged for the top spot in the Pacific Division. The Wings, on the other hand, just barely secured their 22nd straight playoff appearance, pulling out some desparately clutch late-season wins to fend off Columbus.

The Match-up: This is a match of system versus star power. Anaheim has most of the big names with one of the best top lines in hockey, while the Wings have of course had to deal with the loss of two of their great playoff stalwarts with the retirements of Nick Lidstrom and Tomas Holmstrom. Mike Babcock is an excellent, future Hall of Fame coach, but he is going to have to work some magic to get his depth players to win the matchups with the Ducks' stars.

Player to Watch: This series features both Pavel Datsyuk and Teemu Selanne, the latter possibly in his final playoff run. This is going to be a treat for all of the true hockey fans out there, especially with all games available on national TV.

Prediction: This one is purely wishful thinking, I don't think they can really do it, but I want both the Ducks eliminated and a second-round match with the Wings for one last Hawks/Wings divisional clash. Wings in 6.

#3 Vancouver Canucks vs. #6 San Jose Sharks

The Teams: The Canucks are expected to play a major role in this year's playoffs, as whoever they lose to will of course go on to win the Stanley Cup per official NHL rules. The Sharks would of course love to be that team, with both teams seeing their championship window dwindling due to aging cores.

The Match-up: This match-up will likely boil down to which team's checking line can effectively contain the other's top scoring line. The Canucks had a solid pickup with the trade for Derek Roy, it will likely fall on him to frustrate Joe Thornton, while the Sharks will need to find someone who can consistently breathe heavily on the Sedin twins to ensure that they spend more time falling down than scoring goals.

Player to Watch: Antti Niemi has somewhat quietly had a Vezina-worthy season due to being on a West Coast team. He's seen a large number of shots and made some very timely saves, though typically hasn't earned a ton of respect despite already having a Stanley Cup under his belt. One more ring would likely vault him into the conversation of the league's top goaltenders.

Prediction: Both of these teams have lots of playoff experience, it should be a pretty even battle. Canucks in 6.

#4 St. Louis Blues vs. #5 Los Angeles Kings

The Teams: One might think the Kings still suffered from a bit of a Cup hangover despite having the lockout-extended offseason; however it might just be that the team just takes a while to get strong as their formula is looking a lot like last year's. St. Louis, on the other hand, has been relatively consistent during the year, neither stellar nor terrible.

The Match-Up: Both of these teams play a relatively strong defensive style and have hard grinding forechecks, but neither has really seen the level of goaltending that they did last year. While neither team typically lights up the scoreboard for huge numbers, this might turn out to be a high-scoring matchup if neither team gets it together in net.

Prediction: This is honestly the hardest one for me to pick, just flipping a coin. Kings in 7.

I'm nervous about the sharks. They've recently found a way to spread their depth and won a lot of games down the stretch. They put Brent Burns on the wing and turned him into a Big Buff type player, which historically the Canucks have struggled against. If Schneider is actually injured or not 100% we are toast.
