According to the Lego Death Star kit (only source I could find that names them specifically) they are Death Star Troopers. So... probably specialists from other branches brought together to form a unit specifically for the Death Star's core operations.

Nah, my son is 4 and loves Star Wars; though his knowledge, like mine, is lacking. He was trying to describe to me some trooper with a helmet like DV's, but with a different face. Those troopers I mentioned are the only ones I could think of. I never realized, until googling, just how many of the non-brass Imperials seem to wear full head helmets 24/7.

Matt Smith rumored to be up for a role, Jason Flemyng reveals audition entry

Doctor Who fans will be excited to hear to that Matt Smith might be up for a role in Star Wars: Episode VII. There's no information on whether he had an audition, a screen test, or just talked with JJ Abrams. But the rumor is out there thanks to Bleeding Cool, and it would be pretty awesome if there was any truth to it.

Then there's X-Men: First Class and Snatch actor Jason Flemyng, who posted the following photo of an audition script from Star Wars Episode VII. The photo came with the following note,

yeah. that's a conscious effort on the part of Lucas/the imperial government to dehumanize the ranks. After the Clone Wars there was a rebellion among the clone troopers, and as a result the genetic stock for the clones was vastly diversified, and they started recruiting non-clones as well. They also began a policy of enforced detachment: TIE pilots never fly the same craft for more than a few missions, troop organization is shuffled around quite often. they don't want the grunts to have any sense of camaraderie. also, TIE fighters don't have any shielding at all, since they and their pilots, like all other non-commissioned troops, are considered expendable.

combine that with inaccurate guns and it's no wonder the empire's best is so ineffectual. The only time the empire ever actually fights well is in the EU, when Pellaeon and others like him reform the military into something we would recognize as a well trained fighting force.

Adam Driver cast as the lead Villian

A month ago it was reported that Girls actor Adam Driver was up for a role in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII. There weren't any specific details given at the time, but today we've learned that he's close to signing a deal in which he would play the main villain in the story. Variety reports that the character "is said to be in the vein of iconic Star Wars villain Darth Vader." Driver definitely has the look of a villain, and he might be the first official character in the new trilogy to be announced. Apparently he was up against Michael Fassbender and Hugo Weaving for the role. Those are both amazing actors, so Driver must have brought something pretty awesome and dark to the character that the others didn't.

i read this shit as a teenager and it was awful even to my inexperienced eyes. there's a LOT of great material in the EU but there's also a fair amount of ridiculous shit... and this both fits their descriptions thus far AND is ridiculous shit.
