There is some truth to what he's saying, yet it can be used for positive social interaction, no doubt.

Oculus VR buys Xbox 360 Controller Design Firm

The name may not trigger any immediate recognition, but there is a good chance that you've held at least one of Carbon's products in your hands—they built the Xbox 360 controller. They were also instrumental in creating the Kinect motion system.

"The Carbon team brings their expertise around building great feeling, great looking consumer products like the Xbox 360 controller," Oculus VR said in a blog post. "We’ve been working with Carbon for nearly a year on multiple unannounced projects."

So it's not exactly a new partnership, but we're left wondering: What "unannounced projects?" The most likely answer would be that Carbon is also developing some type of controller interface for the Oculus Rift, or could be applying its skills to help make the commercial Rift a much more appealing and sleeker package. Peter Bristol, creative director at Carbon Design Group, sees VR's commercial design as a challenge: "From a design and engineering perspective, building the products that finally deliver consumer virtual reality is one of the most interesting and challenging problem sets ever."

If the Oculus team wants a device that's attractive and ergonomic, then team behind the 360 controller and Kinect would be a good place to start.

If this is for a controller, hopefully it's for something almost, but not quite, entirely unlike the 360's controller.

Sales to China suspended due to high resale rate
The story began after Reddit user txz8096 flagged that Oculus Rift pre-orders were being cancelled in China. An initial statement from the firm stated, “We’re slightly behind in manufacturing and there’s currently a high chance that some developers with estimated shipping in July may not have their DK2s shipped until August.”

Following up the Reddit post, an Oculus team member said in the comments, “Yes, it is a bummer that we’ve had to suspend sales in China due to extreme reseller purchases. We need to make sure that we are doing what we can to make sure that resellers that are looking to flip our product for a profit are not taking stock away from legitimate developer purchases globally.

“Our product, in its current form, is a developer kit, meant for developers that develop VR content. We are looking into alternative ways to make sure that our development kits are getting into legitimate developer hands in China. If you are an enthusiast, we kindly ask that you wait for the consumer Rift. It will be worth the wait.”

When one user asked the Oculus member what sort of re-selling figures it was seeing in China, they replied, “We were forced to suspend an entire country from purchasing. I’ll let you put 2 and 2 together.”

So, something a bit amazing just happened.
    https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comm...chematics_and/
to copy the r/Games eplanation title "The design, schematics, and firmware for the first Oculus Rift Dev Kit (DK1) is now open source, under a mix of Creative Commons and BSD-like licenses"

EDIT: And they showed off a new internal prototype

Whelp, fuck. Gonna need a system upgrade.

Also it's a shame about the lack of laptop options, too. One of the selling points for me was the idea of freedom from my desktop for gaming, but it seems like that's still a quite a while from being realized.

That's really been my big hangup with consumer VR. You basically need a pretty monster rig in order to run games well, but the end result is still a jagged pixelated mess.

The power to run games at the same level of fidelity you get on a smaller monitor *now* in a VR headset doesn't even exist. You'd need at least 4k per eye(and by my math even that might be a little too low for the target), running at 95-120FPS. 3x Titan X's can't even pull that off. There's a huge huge hardware barrier to good VR, and I frankly think we're 5-10yrs away from it.

I think Carmak has come to that realization cause the shift in his attitude over the last year has been pretty noticeable.

Ultimately even the way it looks I think VR has a lot going for it, but at the end of the day I don't see consumers being happy with it. The average user is going to put it on, see the pixelated mess, and go back to their nice looking TV. Which only starts the death spiral of why bother making VR games.

All games will need to be pre-approved by a ratings board to get on the store.

So what's up w/ this shit, all hype died? Can you imagine fpp (first person porn [view]) and moving one's head around and see a dungeon in mad detail, chandeliers swinging above and shit, and maybe chains/contraptions hanging from the ceilings... and to the left, a pissed father looking at one's direction in disgust cuz her daughter is getting banged...
