    Price Drop
    Rift + Touch to $600 | Rift to $500 | Touch to $100
There are two driving components to get VR out to as many people as possible,” Iribe told attendees. “One is content… We think we have content pretty well covered now. There are over 100 touch titles available today, hundreds more Rift titles and a lot more coming. There’s thousands of hours of gameplay available right now on the Oculus platform.

The next component to driving VR success is lowering the barrier to entry and making it more affordable to getting everyone into VR. To achieve this, our operations team has been working with suppliers to drive down the cost.

We’re thrilled to bring down the price. There has never been a better time to get into VR and we’re just getting started. Oculus and Facebook are committed for the long term. We’re going to be investing in VR for decades to come.

    Oculus Go - $199 | 2018

    https://www.oculus.com/go/
    • uses Next Gen VR optics (New lenses WQHD 2560x1440 - single panel)
    • uses LCD (full RGB) with screen switching/shutter being faster than what LCD's has traditionally had.
    • Android based
    • integrated Spacial audio (there's a headphone jack too)
    • wi-fi only (allows for full software stack control)
    • Glasses friendly
    • no positional tracking for headset or controllers
    • Rumor: Snapdragon 821 mobile chip
    http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1446287

As of right now, it's a fancier GearVR.

I hope they didn't delay v2.0 for this...waiting to jump in until the next gen is here and this is not that.

I have fun with my little Gear VR only because it came with my phone. I can't hate on where this tech goes anymore but it definitely needs some TLC.

Slight bump, but do we have any word on a model revision coming in 2018?

The current price of Oculus is crazy in Canada compared to the competition and I'm having a hard time not jumping on it. $450 for the headset + touch controllers, and two sensors, although I'm not sure if that allows room tracking like Vive or if it's one for the headset tracking and one for the controllers. Meanwhile the Vive is still $800 with its older model controller wands. Only real con I hear against Oculus is you need multiple towers for room tracking, and the game compatibility between Rift/Vive games still isn't quite as good as it should be.

The downside is with that pricepoint, it feels like they're trying to rid of old stock before slapping a 2.0 model in stores, but it's probably the cheapest entry point aside from owning an expensive phone + GearVR.

[EDIT] Fuck it, ordered one. Even if I get a year out of it I'll be content, and then see where VR solutions go from there since this isn't going away anytime soon this time around.

Two trackers does allow room scale.
$450 is pretty good to be honest.

Vive comes on deals like this occasionally : https://www.vive.com/us/vive-winter-sale-2017/ which is $600 includes DAS ( big upgrade imo for vive ), Fallout 4 VR and $50 steam credit.

There are some pros/cons to each system.

I don't think Oculus or HTC are bringing out a new unit in 2018.

The big interest right now is the Pimax 5k and 8k units, they're getting a lot of attention but until we have real consumer units in real peoples hands then I'm not convinced ( will day 1 order if it delivers as consumer says - it'll replace my desktop setup ).

If you're not buying for flight sim or racing sim then games are a bit limited right now.

The biggest issue for me is that the market needs critical mass. There's a lot of short "experience" type games, but nothing like a league/dota/csgo/pubg to keep me playing.

Fallout 4 VR is meant to be great, doom VR also.
Personally single player games struggle to hold my attention these days unless it's a souls game.

We need stuff like native minecraft support, or more games like Payday 2 VR where VR users can play with normal users. It's so fucking cool.

Single player stuff in VR feels just very lifeless, while the multiplayer stuff is where the fun is at. ( for me ).

There's plenty of youtube bait out there ( job simulator, rick and morty , etc ) that's fun for kids/ non gamers.

FO4 VR would be of interest, but it only supports Vive officially, and a quick google shows spotty success trying to force it to work with an Oculus Touch setup. Perhaps that'll get ironed out at some point before it goes on sale. Not sure how well my 1060 would even handle that game tbh given Bethesda's usual game performance.

I'm mainly in it (for now) for the social experiences with a couple friends I got online that have Vives, as well as Tiltbrush/Quill to do some 3d art in. I actually feel a VR interface for 3d asset creation will be the next thing for movies/games, or at least complement it. Software-wise I know exactly what I'm getting into given what I've seen friends play, and GiantBomb's semi-regular round-up of quick-gimmicky titles. Loved me some Superhot, so I'll definitely be grabbing Superhot VR even though it's short.

    A 8700k paired with a 1080 ti can't run fallout 4 without getting reprojection ( fps can't hold 90 ).

It's definitely got that Bethesda performance.

Well I had what I'd consider a VR moment when I took my headset off after a short session, and somehow ended up with my desk to the right of me instead of in front, while having sat in my chair the whole time.

HDMI/USB cable extension feels mandatory for this thing since there's no quick access to unplugging it from the Rift (seems like an obvious fix for a CV2 model) for putting away for the night, and the current length isn't enough to have it come in from above to avoid the hassle of not stepping/rolling-chair-over it, at least with my current setup. Going to see if I can 3d print out a cover for the face part of it to block dust getting in when it's not in use.

Both sensors on desk works good enough for most stuff, short of anything below my waist if I don't back up enough from the desk. Need to set these up in a Vive manner at some point since that ought to be better for tracking overall in my space.

Best buy thus far feels like Virtual Desktop to me, because it's the kind of thing I'd have expected either Facebook or Valve to have done themselves instead of making me bounce back and forth between headset and monitor to install/set things up. Or the waste of processing that is Oculus Home.

    Whoops.

Every Rift unusuable without resorting to some messing around, until Oculus issue a patch - that can't be delivered via it's app.

Facebook is developing a Second Life/PlayStation Home-like social space to be used primarily with Quest.

The VR app will be a mix of social places where users can mingle and chat, and other areas where they can play games against each other.

Facebook said anyone using Horizon would be able to call on human "guides" to help them navigate and become more familiar with the virtual environment.

The guides will not be "moderators" who will police behaviour, said Facebook. It added that it would include tools that let people manage how they interact with other users.

It will also have options that let people shape and build their own part of the environment. They will also be able to design their own avatars.

The entire space has been given a cartoon-like feel as it is intended to be used on Facebook's Oculus Quest headset, which does not have the high resolution graphics of PC-linked headsets.

The creation of Horizon means Facebook will shut down its current VR hang-outs - Facebook Spaces and Oculus Rooms. Both will close on 25 October.

I'm not sure who they're trying to cater to with FB Horizon, short of stepping on Rec Rooms toes.

They're also developing Oculus Link, which will let you play PC VR games on your Quest via USB3, with minimal caveats that I've been reading from folks with hands-on at OC6. For me this is a big deal and something I was wanting Quest to have had from the start, which they could definitely improve further on the hardware-end on the next Quest iteration in a couple years. Curious what the overhead on the PC end is for it though, since it has to compress a video feed with minimal latency.

Hand tracking coming sometime next year to Quest also, which to sounds 'eh for games (they said you can't mix'n'match controllers and hands), but might be alright for social things. The appeal for me would be controller-free media consumption since all I'd need is the headset and a wifi connection to Netflix/Youtube,

Assuming no major jumps are made on the PC-focused headsets to outweigh the hybrid stand-alone + PC factor of the Quest while sitting at $399, I may spring for a 2nd-gen Quest in a couple years if they can bump the screen specs to 90hz at the least. Main thing I want is affordable full-body tracking but that's not happening anywhere aside from HTC's overpriced trackers.
