    Oculus Rift 2.0: 3d porn where?

    Has anyone gotten one yet? A close friend of mine got one last week and his youtube videos are going viral like mad. We're about to play portal 2 on this thing..




    This thing is absolutely nuts to use. Even at 1200x800 resolution shared on the two screens. Even though this is just the dev kit I can't believe how insane this is. Surely there are some VR heads here that have some experience?

    It's a simulator. This technology is pretty new so not much is out yet.

    Building a new PC this month should hopefully handle pretty much any game at 1080p on a Rift setup. Primarily interested in one whenever sim/racing games start supporting it as a standard bullet-point, which will probably be sometime late-2014, depending on whenever that consumer model is ready.

    I don't see it being very well suited for anything of a competitive nature though with the head-tracking turned on. The large FoV range though could potentially be great, depending on how compressed the actual viewing resolution you see straight-ahead is on the consumer model.

    Digital Founry pegged the resolution you 'see' on the developers' model rift at around 420x360 per eye (from a single 1280x800 panel in dev model), since a good chunk of the panel's resolution is wasted on the wide-FoV, as this pic of theirs demonstrate -



    It's something that will get better with each revision of the Rift, be it a higher resolution panel (they're aiming for 1080p for consumer), or a change in lens type. And if it's anything like my experience with 3D games on PS3 that outputted a 1280x1440 video feed (most of which was rendered from two 640x720 shots stretched horizontally to fill) , you can kinda get away with a lower-resolution in 3D since you're getting twice the visual information to work with.


    The guys at Tested.com also did a thorough look at TF2's experimental settings for the Rift. Half the control options remind me of the various ways developers implemented FPS controls on the Wii Remote and Playstation Move, but with head-tracking included.

    Havn't gotten one of the devkits, waiting for consumer v1 or v2.

    I really hope they make it useable on ps4 games, I have a feeling some of the better sony dev studios will do it hopefully.

    I really think MMOs are gonna be one of the worst genre's to develop this for because of how UI dependent they are. The amount of work your brain will need to process floating UI elements combined with mouse movements and the head axis is just gonna make people sick or give them headaches. Look up 3D versions of WoW and you'll get an idea of the problems that come up.

    As far as games are concerned, I don't see this getting out of the FPS genre and any first person modes of other genres, like first person mode Sims 4 or something. I'm really looking forward to like, simulated environments though. Oculus Rift version of Amnesia is something I am very much looking forward to and I hope happens.

    I could see overhead style games with minimalist HUDs working also. Something like Black&White2 would be pretty intense, being up in the clouds peering down on the land.

    Im not sure why so many people keep going on about this as new technology. Its not new at all. Its been around since the late 60s and in the late 80s or early 90s it came around again. Perhaps the way they are doing it now has something about it thats new Im not sure but the ideas and technology are not new

    The technology for the rift is pretty new. This is why there is not much support for it yet. Herppppp

    edit: To stay on topic, it's a fucking tragedy that Reisse was murdered. Such a fucking hit in the gut to the VR community.

    He was not "murdered" he was killed and it was an accident. There is a difference.

    I can see they're getting military contracts and shit for Oculus Rift for VR training. Our military prob. already have VR but not as good.
