    Quantum Break (PC/XB1)

Remedy Entertainment, the developer behind Alan Wake and Max Payne, have announced Quantum Break, an all new IP for Xbox One.

Microsoft says it is a new type of gaming experience that “blurs the line between gaming and TV by integrating drama and gameplay into one seamless, uniquely immersive experience.” It continues, “How you play the game impacts the show, and the show informs how you play the game.”

Remedy Entertainment boss Sam Lake has addressed fans who were expecting a sequel to Alan Wake over their new IP Quantum Break at Microsoft’s Xbox One reveal conference yesterday.

“Ater the first game, we worked hard to make the sequel happen,” said Lake in a video message. “But you know, these games are huge undertakings and many things need to fall in place. The right partners and the right funding. From the creative perspective, it would be awesome if we could just create cool stuff and not worry about minor details like money. But we all know that that’s not the case.”

Lake continued, “When Alan Wake came out, it was not a huge hit on day one. It has been doing really well since then. It’s become a cult classic, which is really nice. The Alan Wake franchcise has moved more than three million since, which is a nice figure. But when the game was released, that was not the case immediately. And even though we worked hard on it, the sequel was not happening. The time wasn’t right for that.”

Lake added that the studio could have created something less ambitious, but that it wouldn’t have done justice to the fans, the team at Remedy, or the franchise.

“Wake is really dear to me and to everyone at Remedy. We knew from the beginning that when Wake wakes up in the dark place, that getting out from there is going to be a long, hellish journey and a hard struggle. And I guess that where we are now is fiction becoming reality. We definitely want to keep on working on Alan Wake. I definitely want to create something new for Alan Wake when the time is right.”

With Quantum Break, the studio is aimming to make its “ultimate” game.

“We always have many ideas in the works, and things that we are excited about,” said Lake. “And happily, we got a full backing for something new, a new concept, a new IP—something big, bigger than what we have ever created before. Something where we could take everything we have learned from Alan Wake, everything we’ve learned from Max Payne, and we were able to put that all together, and to create what could be called the ultimate Remedy Experience.”

To thank Alan Wake fans for their understanding, Remedy Entertainment has put together a package including Alan Wake, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, and bonus content like exclusive videos, never-before-seen comics, behind-the-scenes materials, screenplays, and more on Humble Bundle. If you haven’t used the service before, it’s ‘pay what you want.’ And for Xbox 360 owners, Remedy worked with Microsoft to create “awesome offers” for everything Alan Wake-related, including games, avatars, add-ons, available today.

Quantum Break is the debut Xbox One game from Alan Wake studio Remedy and its a TV show tie-in similar to Defiance.

The actions and choices you make will impact other players, and the clip opened with a young girl showing a woman horrific visions of destruction.

The slogan is, “Time is the fire in which we burn.”

There was then some fleeting shots of bullet time gunplay between soldiers and other people. It was short and showed very little, but it sounds like an interesting concept.

According to Microsoft Quantum Break will “blur the line between gaming and TV by integrating drama and gameplay into one seamless, uniquely immersive experience.”

Again, this will allow the TV show and the game to change one another. No word just yet on the network which will be hosting Quantum Break or whether it will only occur on Xbox One was revealed. More at E3 we reckon.

Xbox One title Quantum Break has been discussed by Microsoft’s Phil Spencer, who feels Remedy’s shooter will push boundaries in how we perceive games and live-action content. The game will run alongside a TV show, similarly to Defiance.

Speaking with Polygon, Spencer said that together, Microsoft and Remedy are, “trying to push the boundaries of how people think of live action and gaming today.

He added, “The unique capability of Remedy, I think is around storytelling, and television’s always been a great place to tell strong stories. We’ve got this interactive component … where actions in one and viewing in one, impact what people are doing in the other. That’s our creative idea.”

“The team has enough momentum in that space, I thought, so it was a great opportunity to put them on stage and show something. We’ll talk more as the game evolves.”

that explains the live action scenes in the trailer. Defiance does it pretty well, so there's a little hope for this being decent.

Max Payne 1 and 2. Alan Wake. Sure it takes them 12 years at a time to make a game, but the results are fantastic

    Expect Alan Wake easter eggs
Speaking with Joystiq, Remedy creative director Sam Lake hinted that the studio's Xbox One game Quantum Break may have a connection to Alan Wake. We jokingly asked if Quantum Break was really just a story written by Alan. He said no, but added that Quantum Break deals with many timelines and universes. "The way we approach these things is definitely kind of – they're connected in weird ways. And definitely for Remedy fans, there will be a lot of familiar things from a Remedy game."

"We are definitely dealing with the idea of multiple timelines – essentially a multiverse – where many things are possible," he said.

Defiance clone that plays like Max Payne and is told like Alan Wake
Quantum Break developer Remedy Entertainment is attempting to blend the shooting of Max Payne with the interactive story-telling of Alan Wake into a new experience that raises the studio’s bar. In a new interview, studio CEO Matias Myllyrinne has explained how he hopes it will be the ultimate Remedy experience.

Coming exclusively to Xbox One, the game will run alongside a TV show, similar to sci-fi shooter Defiance to create one consistent fiction that progresses as one. It’s ambitious, but Myllyrinne believes Remedy has the chops to make it happen.

Speaking with GI.biz he said, “We’ve taken a lot of the learnings about interactive storytelling from Alan Wake and we hope to raise the bar further. We’ve taken a lot of the learnings about cinematic combat and shooting mechanics from Max Payne to push those further. We’re building on those for what will hopefully be the ultimate Remedy experience.”

On Quantum Break’s TV and game duality, Myllyrinne added, “The game and TV show ship together as one cohesive package. The episodes of the TV show are interwoven with the episodes of the game. The storylines take place in the same location. Hypothetically you can watch one or play the other but you’ll get so much more out of it if you combine them together.”

Myllyrinne stated that the game is Xbox One exclusive because of its scope, and that siding with a big player like Microsoft will help support the project through to launch. “This is clearly a strategic move for them as well as us,” he said. “This is something – we have crazy ideas – but we need to fall back and let the full force of a company like Microsoft see it through.

“There’s no way on God’s green Earth that we would take on a venture like this on our own. We might have the appetite but there’s no way we could.”

    Gameplay trailer teased for VGX
First gameplay footage of Quantum Break might arrive at VGX on December 7, Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer has said.

“We did a pretty deep dive [on Quantum Break] last week while we were in Europe, and I’m feeling really good about the creative,” Spencer told Polygon. “It may be before the end of the year when we talk more about what the story and the gameplay is.

“We have a pretty good piece that I’m trying to coerce people into putting out before the end of the year … showing the full Remedy vision, with Sam [Lake] giving a pretty good description of how the game works with some new gameplay footage.

“Maybe VGX would be a good place for that.”

As for other Xbox One games, don’t expect any announcements during the system’s launch this Friday, but VGX should be something look forward to.

“We’ll have some things to say there,” Spencer teased.

You play as both the Hero and the Villain
In Quantum Break, Remedy’s interactive transmedia exclusive on Xbox One, the player will not only step into the shoes of the protagonists, but the antagonist as well. As previously reported when the game was announced, players will alternate between playing a part of the game and watching an episode of the series.

Speaking with Game Informer, the studio’s writer and creative director Sam Lake, said Quantum Break is the team’s take on action movies featuring not only a tough adversary, but one who is also “really cool.”

“Think about Die Hard. The bad guy (Alan Rickman) comes close to stealing the show,” said Lake. “This is our interactive dynamic way of doing these scenes where in the action movie you see the bad guy planning and making his moves. You get to play Paul Serene during the junction moments and make these choices. We want to make even the bad guy a deep, complex character that you will see different sides of. You will understand why he’s doing what he’s doing.

“It really amounts to dynamic, player-created cliffhangers at the end of every act of the game.”

Jack and Beth are the protagonists, and during these “junction moments,” players will switch to playing the villain, Paul Serene, which are crucial to the project’s transmedia agenda.

“He has this time power that gives him the ability to see glimpses of different timelines and different futures,” Lake said. “At the end of each act of the game, you actually get to play him during these junction moments. You get to explore and discover these glimpses of different futures, and you get to make the choice. Which of these two futures that are presented will come to pass?

“This leads into the next episode of the show. Immediately the first scene of the show is affected by the choice you made. It’s very much alternate content depending on the choice you made. The idea is that it will feel relevant to the plot of the show. You’ll learn important things that you’ll need for the game.

“At the same time, the junction moment is just one gameplay scene, and the glimpses you see can be approached in two different ways. They are fragments. You are learning about certain things, but all options have both positive and negative from the bad guy’s perspective, but also from the heroes’ perspective.”

Lake said the junction points and gameplay not only “affect the tone of what will follow,” but will also unlock alternate content and player choices follow them throughout the rest of the game.

Dimensional Imaging’s DI4D software licensed by Remedy for next generation facial performance capture
    http://a.pomf.se/g09dh.gif
Dimensional Imaging today announces that Remedy Entertainment has licensed its DI4D facial performance capture software for use in the development of its upcoming Xbox One title Quantum Break. DI4D is able to derive super high definition facial motion capture from an array of nine standard video cameras, without using markers, makeup or special illumination. Remedy will use DI4D software to process facial performance capture in Quantum Break.

Sam Lake, Creative Director of Remedy said: “Quantum Break is a hugely ambitious project that combines action and narrative components in a unique way to bring the characters to life. The only way to achieve the high quality of performance was to create highly realistic digital doubles of talented actors. By using Dimensional Imaging’s DI4D facial performance-capture solution combined with Remedy’s Northlight storytelling technology we can ensure that every nuance of the actors’ performances are captured on screen.”

Colin Urquhart, CEO of Dimensional Imaging said: “We are delighted that Remedy are planning to use the DI4D system for even more facial performance capture in Quantum Break. This provides further evidence that our DI4D solution not only delivers the enhanced quality of facial performance capture required for ambitious next generation games, but that it also provides an efficient production ready pipeline. We can’t wait to see more awesome animation like Remedy showcased in their Quantum Break E3 trailer!”

This game's trailers have more people talking about the game than actual game footage.
