    Laptop Issues

I picked up a new laptop recently but I'm sure there is something wrong with it. It's a Lenovo Y580. I've installed an mSATA SSD for the hard drive. It boots quickly but takes forever to load windows fully. It takes several minutes before I can open any application without extreme hanging . It didn't have this issue when I first got it and it seems to have become worse. It's only a few months old.

Did you configure windows to optimize the use of the SSD?

It's installed only to the SSD (not in any kind of hybrid mode) and the OS is aligned correctly.

Can you check your Services list and see if Windows Update is listed as "Automatic (Delayed Start)" (something like that, I forget the exact name)

One of the Windows Vista PCs I've been handed for "inspection" had a similar issue. It was quick on paper, no bloat ware (Q9000 CPU) and a normal hard drive. It would start up quick, and then as you think it finishes, it suddenly runs a bit slow/laggy. Further inspection revealed Windows Update sevice (one of the many svchost.exe sub processes) was using up 600~mb memory just checking for updates.

Before anyone goes "lolvista" I've seen it happen on Win7 PCs too. No where I've found on the internet gives a specific reason why and I'm also unable to tell. Disabling Windows Update did the trick, but it's more of a workaround. However, I instruct them to seek out updates at an idle time per week (i.e. during dinner or when you need to afk for a while).

Thank you so much for posting this. My laptop had the exact symptoms starting yesterday. It gets to the login screen and signs me in really quickly (SSD) but then it just hangs for close to 10 minutes before I can load anything, after which it starts behaving normally again.

I checked Windows Update and it was indeed changed to automatically check and download updates, even though I remember changing it to "Ask me..." a while ago. But after changing it back to "Ask me..." it's functionally normally again.

Hm I'm unsure if that will fix it for you (checking "Ask me.."), but if it helps that's good.

For some reason even if there's no update to download, Windows will check anyway and the process of it doing so consumes so much memory your PC feels like a drag. As for security sake Windows WILL check if there's any regardless at least once everyday (which usually means on start up), hence it's slow to begin with.

Checking both a Vista and 7 machine I don't see an option to "ask me..." unless that was XP ? Oh well, doesn't matter. If it's fixed for you I rather not toy around with anything else as it'll just break.

Sorry, it wasn't exactly "Ask me...," but this is the option I used (W7 Home Premium):

    Spoiler: show

The boot up this morning (as well as once yesterday) was insanely slow, so I thought to come here and ask. Then I saw your post, changed it to "Let me choose...," rebooted it, and it was as fast as it was before the problem came around.

You're right, though, if it's the checking that's causing the slowdown, then the option change shouldn't have fixed anything, so who knows. I have an i7 3610QM and 8gb of RAM (Asus G75VW) if that matters any.
