    Need some East Coast server... But knowing the situation it's probably going to be at SE LA office. Welp, that's better than Japan.

    I'm wondering if Ragnarok is East Coast US because it is listed as North America but recommended for European players.

    According to what they've been saying it seems there's only one location for the NA/EU datacanters.

    We will have one data center that houses the North America/Europe servers. In the future, we may create additional data centers based on a variety of factors, but currently we have set up one to house the servers created for the NA/EU territories.

    I know that there are some that are concerned about latency issues and I can say that we chose the location of the North America/Europe data center after conducting numerous tests from various locations and ensuring that it covers multiple territories.

    In phase 3 of the Beta Test, you'll be able to choose your World freely, so please try out servers located in both the Japan data center and the North America/Europe data center. This way, you'll be able to see which fits your needs the best and ensure a great gaming experience.

    Yoshida recently made a lengthy post on the topic that we're currently translating and we'll be sure to share it with you as soon as it’s complete.

    Thank you again for your continued support.
    I'd say Montreal is a pretty good happy-medium if they're only going to have one data center.

    Dumbasses. Those morons whining about this shit have no clue how far away Japan actually is from the rest of the world. Pretty much ANYWHERE in the EU is going to be closer to Montreal than it is to JP, which means lower ARR pings for the entire continent than the whole of 1.0

    SE: "Hey guys, here's some free ice cream - come and get it!"
    EU: "What, no shots and fudge sauce? Fuck you, don't want it"
    SE: "But....but it's free! Isn't plain ice cream that's free better than no ice cream at all?"
    EU: "Don't patronize me with your sane logic - go fuck yourself and your ice cream"

    And seems that for once, living in New England actually pays off:

    I don't see what all the fuss is about. I live in northeast England and just got a decent ping from that IP.

    Minimum = 109ms, Maximum = 110ms, Average = 109ms

    When I ping jp.square-enix.com I get

    Minimum = 293ms, Maximum = 306ms, Average = 300ms

    Looks good to me.

    I get ping results in two different ranges, it's consistently either around 35 or around 120. Ping to the JP address averaged around 200.

    ~50ms for me. Thought it'd be better than that from Winnipeg to there.

    Tracert will give you better look at latency per hop.

    My company HQ is in Sq Victoria, a block over from THQs old grounds. Maybe I should transfer.

    Oh neat, they're only 4 blocks away! I'm goin' stalkin' next time I come in.

    Doing this from Miami I get:

    ping to Japan: 198ms average
    ping to Montreal: 66ms average

  16. #36

    To test ping to Japan is www.jp.square-enix.com, right? If so, ping to Japan = 20ms average, ping to Montreal: 110ms average. This is from Oregon. Guess it's Japan servers for me.

    Edit: Actually, now that I think about it, I'm not sure how the whole data center and server thing works. If I were to pick a Japan data center, could I still play on a NA/EU server, or do Japan data centers only house Japan servers, and Montreal only house NA/EU servers?

    www.jp.square-enix.com does not lead to Japan haha. Do a tracert man. Their hosting has multiple content delivery networks set up around the world. I ping 7ms to www.jp.square-enix.com and it's literally 6 hops away from my home in NYC. You need to do a legit tracert to something actually in Japan.

    Getting average 62 ping from Louisiana to Montreal so it's good enough for me.

    This gave me about 18 hops (if I read that correctly) and averaged at about 144ms ping
