Yeah I have all the games available, it's just such a huge time commitment to catch up with this series. I've played through I & II several times and I'm halfway through Dx3 but I haven't played the other ones yet. It's not that the story is hard to understand, but in typical anime/jrpg tradition it is pretty convoluted and there are a ton of characters and minor plot points to remember.
I'll probably do it anyway when this game comes out.
probably just better off watching a cutscene compilation.
I wouldn't say it was huge, I spend a decent chunk of time each game on critical mode but on normal or proud you probably wouldn't have to grind at all and could just do story shit.
The games are fun like I said before, so if you enjoyed KH1 and 2 I see no reason not to play at least BBS and 3D. At the very least, BBS is necessary to play both for story and fun gameplay.
BBS also feels extremely short due to smaller worlds but you basically have to replay it three times to get the full thing (with different story scenes and bosses obviously but still the same locations). 3D is my least favorite honestly but it's still miles better than Days or Coded and you don't have to endure those anymore.
CoM, 358/2 Days and Re:Coded are hard and sluggish to get through, but at least 2 of the 3 you can just watch a video of now I'm pretty sure. CoM you might need to watch a "cutscene compilation" video if you don't want to play it, but CoM+Days are worth knowing story-wise as far as I'm concerned. They both add a nice amount to the story.
BBS is definitely worth it for both story and gameplay. And 3D I haven't finished yet but have seen the final cutscenes and etc and yeah, pretty essential as it leads directly into KH3. 2.8 (the Aqua bit) does give some nice additional story to what she's going through and is a great addition if you play BBS. And Re:Coded... eh, all sorts of meh. Just Jimini recovering his journal if I remember correctly. Watch the final cutscene/bonus scene and you're set.
So yeah, BBS+3D play, CoM 358/2Days and Re:Coded just watch.
As far as the new trailer goes, Sora still looks incredibly DeviantArt+Furry+Emo and it's all sorts of fucking awful lol. Gameplay looks top notch though

Spoiler: show
Are they still standing firm on not adding any star wars?
Frozen world as well

Just watch a friggin youtube synopsis. I didn't play the 3ds or vita? (or was it psp one, idk) with so many of those others. just the main 2. I can't be fucked to play all those games. It's like watching naruto filler
This is a sixteen year old franchise, and most people have only played the KH1 & 2. If they don't release some sort of story overview DVD, or some way to explain the story up until III, they'll make a great game that will get mixed reviewed because most people won't know WTF is going on. I can't think of any other flagship franchise that comes close to the amount of games and time elapsed between them, for them to skip this function. Without it all they do is shoot themselves in the foot, but this is SE we're talking about.
If not them, someone will do a YT series on summarizing this Mind Fuck of a story, for those who couldn't shell out the money to play all of the en-between games. Probably already a lot you can pick up out there already though.
I haven't played the games, but I recall GameTrailers had a video on the story several years ago that might help clarify the storyline for someone here:
But Elcura has said that is not acceptable, so it must be!!!
Saying the games are like Naruto filler is just plain stupid, nothing else.
There is really only 4 games I would say you need to play for the story: BBS, KH1, KH2, DDD
Did anyone read the manga? I wonder if that's any good for storytelling or is it all main game/extra stories?
