Rutgers player quits after coach's verbal abuse

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) -- Rutgers is dealing with another issue involving a coach's treatment of a player.

A Scarlet Knights football player has left the team after alleging that a coach verbally abused him and threatened to head-butt him during a spring study hall session. The player says the assistant then treated him unfairly once the season started.

Jevon Tyree, a redshirt freshman from Somerset, was on scholarship and quit the team last week.

The website NJ.com reported Friday that Tyree said defensive coordinator Dave Cohen used two profane terms in the study hall in front of teammates and an academic adviser, who reported the issue.

The university said in a statement Cohen was reprimanded by head coach Kyle Flood the next day and apologized. The school denied any physical threat.

This latest problem at the State University of New Jersey comes less than a year after basketball coach Mike Rice was fired for physically and verbally abusing players.

The scandal last year also caused then-athletic director Tim Pernetti to resign under pressure along with a high-ranking university attorney. It also led the school to review the way its coaches treat players and eventually led to the suspension of the men's lacrosse coach Brian Brecht for alleged verbal abuse of players. The university eventually found no criminal or university policy violations and reinstated him.

The disclosure of this incident coincides with NFL investigation into claims by Miami offensive tackle Jonathan Martin that he was harassed in Dolphins' locker room and via text messages by fellow lineman Richie Incognito.

Alright so my source here in Tallahassee gave me the lowdown on the Winston situation as he has been told by players/friends/media/people in the know. I trust him. He says Winston (among other FSU players) was at a party involving a large number of sorority girls. One of these girls (knowingly, but drunk) gave Winston a blowjob. At some point afterwards she passed out. Someone (not clear whether it was her friends or FSU football players) later took her home and left her in her bed. She woke up a couple hours later, naked, and called police assuming sexual assault. And that's all I got at this time.

If that's actually the case, he's fucked since it lasted more than a day or 2, cuz in that time they'd either find the required evidence or... not.

I think the shit about the events being around someone else and him just being questioned and the media blowing it up pointlessly seems much more likely.

Also, if K-State could manage to knock off OU, we'd just have to beat KU to finish with 8 wins and a potential Holiday Bowl. (Theoretically even Cotton is possible but... that ain't gonna happen)

Most likely will end up in Alamo Bowl tho, which I haven't been to yet but I hear it's actually a really fun one, might have to check it out if it works out that way.

Vanderbilt is going to a bowl game for the third season in a row. That last time this happened? Never. I went to the Music City Bowl last year against NC State; definitely going again this year wherever we end up. Hoping for Music City or Gator Bowl, but we'll need to pretty much win out for either. I'd still do the BBVA Compass Bowl, but not sure about New Year's in Mobile, AL.

BBVA Compass bowl is at Legion Field in Birmingham. You do not want that one.

Yeah, flipped Birmingham and Mobile. Even though the Music City Bowl is somewhat boring given that I've been to Nashville a million times, it really is one of the best bowl destinations out there. Awesome city and great venue. Gator is a more prestigious bowl but Jacksonville blows.

Florida State 1st stringers play hangman on bench during second half of Syracuse blowout

    By Bud Elliott @SBNRecruiting on Nov 17 2013, 12:41p
    Brad Blanar

It was homecoming for Florida State, and the amazing 1993 National Title Team was being honored. But at one point Saturday, in the second half, Florida State held a lead of 59-0, and it was outgaining Syracuse 503 to 103.

So you can excuse FSU's starters, pulled shortly after the half, if they were a bit bored with four minutes left in the game. Heck, most of the student section had piled out.

And what better way to pass the time than by engaging in a little game of hangman. According to several folks who took pictures and tweeted, that is indeed what happened, but not before some tic-tac-toe.

Cornerback P.J. Williams is really focused on figuring out the next letter. Senior safety Terrence Brooks looks on, perhaps waiting for his turn. Freshman safety Jalen Ramsey is also in on it, as is an unidentified FSU staffer.

What word are they trying to spell? Can you make it out? And who is running the game?

Have to admit, this is pretty good use of available resources. White boards are plentiful on the sidelines, and a coach probably wouldn't think twice about some upperclassmen using a white board, as it looks like they are diagramming and discussing plays.

    FSU is soooo #Back

UPDATE: the original photographer, Brad Blanar, contacted me via twitter to claim ownership of the photo, and explained that this took place with about 4 minutes left in the game, and that a fan won the game by calling out the answer. Scroll down for the answer...

That's cute, a smart team would be helping their youngsters out for when they need depth and the future in general, though.

    Also, aside about Baylor...

    According to ESPN last week:

Baylor leads the nation in total offense (686 ypg), scoring (61 ppg), pass efficiency (201.5), yards per play (8.64) and passing yards per completion (19.29).

The Bears defense has more interceptions (11) than passing touchdowns allowed (8).

Baylor leads the nation in fewest three-and-outs per game (1.02) and is No. 2 in three-and-outs forced (7).

Baylor is on track to set NCAA records in points per game (61) and yards per game (686). Army averaged 56 points per game in 1944 while Houston averaged 624.9 yards per game in 1989.

BU's starting offense has 85 drives resulting in 52 touchdowns, getting into the end zone on 61.1 percent of its drives.

The Bears lead the Big 12 in tackles for loss with 8.9 per game. That ranks No. 2 in the FBS.

Baylor has converted 52.7 percent of its third down attempts, which leads the Big 12 and ranks No. 8 in the nation.

Baylor leads the Big 12 in sacks at 3 per game. That number ties the Bears for 14th nationally.

BU quarterback Bryce Petty leads the nation in pass efficiency (210.6) and yards per completion (19.68).

BU running back Lache Seastrunk has 10 games of 100 rushing yards or more in Baylor's last 12 games. He's averaging 8.7 yards per carry, which ranks No. 2 nationally.

Seastrunk leads the league with 111 rushing yards per game and 11 touchdowns.

Teammate Shock Linwood, a redshirt freshman running back, is second in the Big 12 with 89.3 rushing yards per game.

BU receiver Antwan Goodley leads the Big 12 with 121.8 receiving yards per game, which is No. 4 nationally.

Baylor is 12-1 in November and December since 2011, which is tops in the FBS. That record includes a 5-1 mark against Top 25 teams.

As far as I can tell they improved every single one of those numbers this week except the 686 yards... cuz they only got 675 this time.

Wisconsin had 554 yards rushing against some team called "Indiana High School" I think?

Targeting my ass...what a weak ass call so early in the game.

Just put flags on the fucking receivers and call a penalty then if the breeze wafts it the wrong way.

    MSU @ Northwestern

Need a "troll science" pic with every offensive player just ducking as they're getting tackled to draw a H2H and targeting call. Eventually the whole opposing defense is ejected and you can score TD's at will.
