But, his 'oh being the partner of someone in prison' bit got tiring, and that's practically all his character did all season. Especially, as the writers made his character start to profit from it at the expense of other interesting characters (Oh Hi i'm going to talk smack about the other prisoners where my fiance is, what could possibly go wrong?)

I'd buy what Maz said if there weren't actually other male characters that were interesting: Healy, Pornstache, the other cute guard and Healy's boss.

They all manage to continue their respective storyline arcs and be interesting at the same time. They all even develop (sans Healy's boss it could be argued) their character and show the audience more into their lives. Healy being a great example of such.

Biggs on the other hand. 'Oh this is tough, and I'm upset for you' -> 'I'm still upset for you, but I'm starting to feel upset for me because apparently I know no one else but you in NYC' -> 'I've stopped really caring about you and since my writer boss likes you being in prison, let me benefit from your hardship in a subtle way' -> 'I'm going to go all out and potentially harm you while trying to profit from your experience'.

I wouldn't have minded this development, except it seemed to be too much. His scenes were too long. Too frequent.

On the other hand, tell me more about Healy's Ukranian postage wife. Tell me more about cute guard dealing with getting the prisoner knocked up.

I think it's sort-of implied that Red took the fall for what she (well, her husband) got involved with, though I suppose we don't know for certain. Morello has literally nothing other than what comes directly from her; that's probably intentional, though, as they place a huge focus on others doubting her backstory, etc..

when Piper reads the article, and says later "I'm not just somebody's girlfriend". To me it seems to be that the purpose of his character is to, sort of, "objectify" her, in the sense that the way he views her and her difficulties is through his own life, rather than her as an individual. This is a classic feminist issue, the whole "housewife" "trophy gf", etc. thing. How else would they have accomplished showing that issue without his character?

Not neccesarily, it's also possible they planted her in jail to take care if the smuggling operation.

I kind of hope they keep it as-is, I love some of the running gags in the show. I was sad when there was actual character interaction with the crying payphone lady.
