the point of Bennet's flashbacks to his time in the military is to point out that he was, and still is, all talk and a coward. He shows up talking and acting like a badass, but when that guy throws the grenade into the room, he acts like a coward, jumps away and saves his own skin, completely opposite of the other guy who jumps on the grenade to protect everyone from the blast. When he goes to Cesar's place and see what kind of shit life that family has and what he will have to be a part of if he goes through with marrying Dayanara, he does what he does best; be a coward and run away. Another key point is at one point Dayanara literally says to Bennett "this baby feels like a grenade.
