This hack is more serious than any RMT, though people will obviously use it to aid in their RMT. I figure if SE were to take legal action it would be for hacking the game not the RMT actions. Hacking into a company's database is serious shit. Selling virtual currency for real money isn't on the same scale.

Anyone else concerned about the security of their payment info?

Concerned about my payment info? No, not at all.

To be serious though, of course I am. That shit-ass launcher renders in IE and runs like garbage, I don't trust is as far as I can throw it. Which is not far because it's digital and thus can't be thrown unless I like, put it on a thumb drive or something.

This was the guy, with his non-legacy goobue mount, every pet - even that one - including ones not yet implemented in the game.

The character has since been banned

I completely agree. But as said, afaik the only time they've ever bothered was with Taj, so I doubt they're gonna waste any legal time on this. Just ban people + eventually fix it from happening again.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. BUT iono I am not worried because of the shitfest they got during the click n' buy madness, I would hope (HOPE) when they switched it was to something better.

I don't trust SE with anything any more.

And what's weird about that screenshot above is I thought the gil cap was 999,999,999.

    The plot thickens.

(and no it's not 99,999,999, people asked that when the gil cut from 1.0->2.0 was going on and they said max gil would not be changed)

Well, there is still the minion issue, but as said the character was banned. I think more than enough people saw it, though, when it was still in the lodestone profile.

You could either edit the item you were buying (this worked) or perhaps just edit the item in your inventory and use it (unsure).

Not saying that what's being talked about isn't happening, I'm just nearly positive that if you want an example of it, this isn't it.

Looks like he edited the values in the sack so that whatever dropped into it's first slot instantly became Allagan Platinums regardless of the item. So two ways to dupe dem monies.

Poor Yoshi has a lot on his hands now.

Searching a word in that video's description came up with a bug exploit for duping gold in Diablo 3.

It was pretty imfamous. I'm actually surprised there's players who never heard of this character.

I don't know anything about programming, but is there some kind of advantage to making it so easy for people to access the server data in the first place? Lower load times? Kinda dumb this was allowed to happen in the first place.

Nope, not with today's computers (or 10 years ago computers for that matter). No advantages.

The only benefit I see is a few saved CPU cycles. Instead of the 1 cycle to do the transaction, it might take two or three extra to validate the database transaction. Multiply this by the number of transactions that are being done. Is it enough to cause much of a slow down? Probably not.

My guess is they programmed this months/a year ago when they were in a crunch to get a base system working and simply didn't come back to finish it. But that's probably giving them too much credit, they were probably just lazy.

The only thing I can think of is database queries which tbh shouldn't be too bad. Database would have to query everytime you sell something to see if you indeed have that item.

Assuming that the db call is optimized, you're talking at most 100ms for the server calculations post receive and pre reply. Add in 150ms each both ways which would be less than 500ms. Somewhat annoying given XIV's system of drag and sell. Could have been an executive decision to not do or remove? I would honestly hope that any game programmer at that level wouldn't be stupid enough to not have suggested server side validation.

  20. #220

    People drag items?

I use a controller for actual gameplay but when I'm just sitting around doing inventory/crafting/etc. I use mouse and I never drag and drop unless I'm organizing the actual placement of items within a window or something, right clicking is so much easier for everything else.
