Just getting into it.
For all the new people, before you dip money into this, here's a few things that will help you decide to open the wallet.
1) There's a rotating weekly hero pool of 6 (then grows 2 additional slots at 12 and 15 for a total of 8) that flips sometime Tuesday morning each week. You can try a hero either there or test drive it in the shop by clicking Try on the hero shop screen. It will give you an idea what to spend your gold on if you enjoy a hero. Newly released heroes take about 6 weeks to enter the rotation pool, and subsequently devalue from 15k to 10k gold.
2) You get 10 gold per match, an additional 20 gold per victory, then quests open up at 6 to give you even more gold. And if you open your profile, you can see what progression you get. eg: 1k gold at levels 2 and 4, 2k gold at 8 and 10, a free stimpack at 10 to boost your xp, etc. Good heroes to buy early on to familiarize yourself would be Valla and Rayor (assassins) ETC (warrior) and LiLi and Furion (support). They are also relatively cheap.
3) Specialists are a niche hero class that is focused on pushing and/or are long range artillery. They play differently than assassins in that they don't have large burst but have good overall dps and a toolkit that puts in lane pressure. Gazlowe and Murky being the exceptions the long range artillery since they are melee.
4) Leeching lane XP is good throughout the first 10 levels. If there is a lane that isn't being occupied by someone on your team, that's XP your are missing. It can happen if a lane lies empty for a long period of time, you can end up behind in levels. You don't even need to kill creeps, just be in XP range when enemy creeps die.
That's all the noob hints I can give for now.
Well, you can technically... get everything without spending irl cash, just not the (possibly) cool skins for a hero
Also, do the "daily quest" if you can (1 shows up randomly per day if you click the bottom right !)
Its usually 300g reward.
If you lvl all the free week heros to 5 + daily, thats a decent amount of gil.
Anyway, my 3 favorite hero's I thinks sylvanis, nova and hammer.
Hammers a great wall destroyer with its range and napalm + defensive unit as it brings down the pain with some hard hitting auto attacks, especially at lv20. Stealthed + growing range circle + 20% attack speed, and msot anything will die from 100% hp trying to get out of your attack range, its massive.
Sylvanis is an amazing lane pusher, and generally fucks up groups of minions/mercs solo and any hero trying to use them as a sheild can be raped as well.
Nova is great for... general BAM HEADSHOT. It may take some getting used to but with a combo of talents + tripple shot, you can literally take a TANK, from 100% hp -> 50 in 1 second and 1% hp with a tripple tap right after (requires Lv16, some good aiming and quick button+mouse clicking). Great stress relief fucking people up really bad though >.>
Some the other classes have some really crazy combo's for some major damage too, like murkey, and muradin. Also stitches, can really fuck people up... eating them and tossing behind a gate in the middle of cannons/gang bang of heros haha
Some the classes I've played

Hammer is my fav, especially if you can pair up with a melee class. The range means you're hitting them two or three times before they get close to you, and napalm means they don't want to stay near you long. Very rarely does a fight go bad for me if I get the jump on some one, but any more than 1 person at a time ends up bad for me. The lack of mobility hurts too, I always unlock the speedier thrusters just cause it helps so much.
I usually go first aid @ level 7 and never siege up unless my thrusters are up. For the longest time I went thruster CD @ level 7 and so many times I get owned due to chain stuns. It's also the reason they kept nerfing Hammer's hp since first aid + stoneskin too stronk on her. Surprisingly I have been going hover tank. Never thought the day I would be using that level 16 talent with high frequency.
there is almost no reason to not take first aid on every hero that has access to it at the moment, it is just way too good
I prefer the thrusters at lvl7 for two reasons; I play very defensively and, if I'm outnumbered or facing some one who can burst me down fast, pop thrusters to gtfo since normal speed is too slow to retreat with. Also, using a hearthstone to heal quickly and getting free thrusters out of it rocks, especially when it comes to getting back into the lanes quickly.
It's usually easier and far safer for me to hearthstone back, heal and free thruster to the area of interest (and I can usually pop a second thruster after the free one finishes) versus taking the first aid and getting bursted down any ways because once you're committed to a fight there's no retreat with out thrusters, and first aid is usually not enough if I'm the target.
Now the shields, those I get if I'm getting rocked hardcore. Otherwise, I take graduating range on siege mode since that helps me keep a distance. I'll be home around 3 or 4pm EST, we all need to play together.
Pretty much fact. This is especially true on Zeratul (even if you get Block) and Hammer as I play both often. If I have to use Z a lot it on Hammer means I am putting myself in too many dangerous situations. Siege up only in safe areas where the enemy is not going to walk by (particularly cloakers) with mines laid near your back end. May end up even being able to beat the person that went on you if you start to kite as First Aid heals you up where as thrusters cd upgrade you are pretty much have to gtfo thus cannot return to battle quite as quickly. She and Abathur have my highest win rates right now.
Feel free to add me if anyone wants to play and I'm actually in game: Syn#1402
Been on a Diablo 3 kick lately though, so I may not be available.
I play mainly supports. And if I duo queue with my friend who mains Illidan, I roll with Reghar with yolo Bloodlust because it's plain funny.
Also play Tyrande, Tyreal, Diablo, Hammer, LiLi, and Valla. For some reason, I still have yet to purchase Zeratul or Nova since I hate playing with cloakers despite how powerful they are.
I'd say my worst fear is stealthed units on hammer for sure Especially on maps like the one with the garden terror, pirateship and the spider queen. The fog effect can make it rough to catch stealthed units, especially ones that use the surroundings to hide behind like tree's and stuff.
Then again I've killed a number of hammers with the nova combo, and by the time you notice the 1 second burst taking about 70%hp, triple tap and your dead O_o (triple has like 1/4th the map range its pretty OP) Its what made me start using nova more then hammer lately haha
I just can't take that first heal over mobility. To keep up in damage against other characters I have to be aggressive in attacking while still somehow being defensive because of the slow speed, the faster cool down on thrusters lets me do that. That's also why I like the increase in basic attack range, plus siege range upgrade if the battle allows it.
If any one gets too close in a dangerous situation, I can concussive blast them away and thrust to safety.
I like the heal because...!
If you get a situation where a nova shoots you in the butt for 60-70% of your hp in under 1 second, it means they have the slow as hell attack build (its about 10sec per auto attack per , and ability CD's are also about 10sec also).
You can possibly healup in that time frame and kill them with siege bombing and force them to run away. You won't escape a nova, as (for me) I tend to get the movement speed bonus stealthed, so unless your near your own base, or other of your team, you won't be escaping (the talent makes nova move near mount speed and nova can run over mines stealthed and they do nothing).
Of course its situational, but it can happen a lot if your going to try to solo lane push and or solo mercs, as most "decent" nova's do roaming killing spree's by lv 16 while there is no 3-4+man orgy going on or some objective oriented mechanic going on.
Also the heal scales as you level up with natural HP gain. It's why I learned to pick up that soul consumption on Diablo for the continual lane presence and also relieve my healers to take care of the squishys in long engagements. Dat 3% per soul so tasty.
Well that's the thing, as Hammer I don't roam alone. If I do, it's because I'm traveling down a map to join up with some one else. As a ranged specialist I just do so much more damage and contribution if I'm behind some one else, even just the normal minions. I usually hope for other teams to hit me first, between Napalm, Mines, Concussive blast, and the talents for basic siege mode attacks, I just do so much damage+pushback that I can thrust away while my teammate finishes them off. If I'm alone then I have concussive blast to try and put distance between us so that I can trust away safely.
Remember, you don't have to thrust away to your base. You only need to run far enough away to not die. Map awareness is so important when I play Hammer. Man, we gotta get a team game going later; I'm so hyped to try and play with a BG crew.
Zalrik21#1930, dont play with people much so still noobish. Although I do like what Nova can do and mainly use her.
stikxs#1870, may or may not be around and also fairly nooby lol.
J0hnblaze#1997... very nooby but learning
