Honestly, if you ignore the last 10 minutes of the game, I don't see how ME2's story or gameplay beats out ME3's.

Outside of Citadel DLC there was no krogan squad mate in ME3, so it had that going against it.
his name is James Vega, may as well be krogan.
I did end up liking Vega though. A lot more than I thought I would.
It took me several runs through the game before I gave Vega an honest chance. I think the main "problem" with him is he isn't a familiar friend/face for long time players.
He's a god damn beast tho, especially if you're not playing a front line character
All I could think when I looked at him was that he was eye candy for female/gay players.

Flynn took to NeoGAF (via Eurogamer) this week to discuss the most heavily requested fan features for a potential remaster, and which ones were on his radar should the project come to fruition.
"The thing I'd love to hear from people is what you'd like to have in such an experience," he wrote. "For me (personal opinion, and based on what people have told me many times before):
1080p
60 fps
High res textures, especially on ME1
Some shader improvements commensurate with newer GPUs
All the DLC
"Seamless experience" - the adventures flow into each other without having to go back to save import, menu screens, etc
"Bear in mind this is a 'wish list' at this point," Flynn added.
Fem Shep can have a one night stand with Vega in The Citadel DLC. That being said, Fem Shep can also have a one night stand with Jaavik...
A "seemless" experience between all 3 games would be something else alright...

Lots of talk of exploration and some "don't worry, there will be faces to shoot" isn't giving the warmest of fuzzies. If there isn't a strong theme and compelling storyline, it's not going to feel like a Mass Effect game IMO.
Sandboxes are great and all, but making ME4 into one without the fate of the galaxy being in question would be a huge departure. I hope that's not the case.
Dragon Age: Inquisition might give us a better idea of how the next Mass Effect game may work. I can see the idea of larger, explorable areas connected by a spaceship. With the Mako returning, we should expect larger area, but exploration doesn't have to mean a loss in story. From what I've seen with DAI, the side quests tie casually back into the main story. Using the same concept could apply to ME.
The developers are aware of what Mass Effect is, so I don't think they'll throw the story aside. They made a pretty big deal about the lead developers and writers have a strong desire to contribute to the Mass Effect universe. After the reception of the last DA and ME games, I imagine there is a strong desire to show people that they can do better.
