Marvel has made another pretty epic move! They've teamed up with Netflix to bring us four new live action series starting in 2015! The four series will include Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage! They will all lead up to a miniseries event for The Defenders. They are basically bringing their movie phase plan to TV, and I hope that it works! I also hope that these series' end up being better than Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. because that's starting to disappoint. That series just needs a reboot with a whole new idea and new characters.

According to the press release the four new series "taking Netflix members deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell's Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a culminating Marvel's The Defenders mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters." This could end up being incredibly awesome! I'm excited to see how this all turns out!

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos had this to say,

With 'House of Cards' and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we're thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, The Walt Disney Company, Marvel and Netflix Inc. today announced that Marvel’s landmark live-action television series, [Newyork] which will bring Marvel’s ‘flawed heroes of Hell’s Kitchen’ characters to Netflix, the world’s leading Internet TV network, will principally film in New York State. Produced by Marvel Television, in association with ABC Television Studios, this groundbreaking series is Marvel’s most ambitious foray yet into live-action television storytelling and represents the largest film or television production project commitment in New York State history.

Filming is set to begin in the Summer 2014 and will create at least three thousand jobs in New York State including up to 400 full time jobs. The project will include nearly 60 one-hour episodes focused on the 4 Defenders characters: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

Last November, Disney and Netflix announced an unprecedented deal for Marvel TV to bring multiple original series of live-action adventures of four of Marvel’s most popular characters exclusively to the world’s leading Internet TV Network beginning in 2015. This pioneering agreement calls for Marvel to develop four serialized programs totaling 52 one-hour episodes culminating in a four to eight episode mini-series programming event. When Governor Cuomo took office in 2011, he made the attraction of the film and television production and post-production industries, and jobs and the economic impact they bring with them, a key part of his overall strategy to grow New York State’s economy. Since that time, he has signed into law several important changes to both programs to make New York more competitive in this global marketplace, and the results have been significant. Both programs enjoyed record-breaking years in 2013, bringing billions of dollars in new spending and thousands of jobs into the Empire State. The stability provided by multiyear funding has particularly encouraged the development of television series production work, like the new Marvel series, as well as long term investments in infrastructure, all of which creates thousands of jobs directly and indirectly related to the actual productions themselves.

During calendar year 2013, applications for 183 film productions were submitted that included 124 films, 33 television programs and 26 pilots. These projects will:

· Generate a direct spend of $2.11 billion in NYS;

· Collect a projected $477 million in credits; and

· Hire an estimated 128,165 actors and crew for the 183 projects submitted.

John Ford, President, International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 52 said, “The men and women of the IATSE look forward to participating in this ground breaking endeavor. Marvel Cinematic Universe tie-in confirmed

This year the Marvel Cinematic Universe is branching out to encompass new genre territory, with Captain America: The Winter’s Soldier‘s political conspiracy/thriller elements and, later this summer, Guardians of the Galaxy introducing a world of cosmic superheroes to moviegoers. Meanwhile, in the months ahead, production will start on Marvel’s upcoming Netflix series, Daredevil, examining the Noir-influenced world of one such crime-fighter who populates the streets of New York in the MCU.

Shows featuring other Hell’s Kitchen-based heroes – Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist – will follow after The Man Without Fear, before all four of them unite in a Defenders mini-series. Marvel Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada has confirmed that the Netflix series will be part of the larger Marvel film universe, as depicted in previously-released Marvel Studios movies, as well as the ABC TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Quesada was featured on Kevin Smith’s Fat Man on Batman Podcast (hat tip to JoBlo), where he formally confirmed that Marvel’s Netflix programs will have ties to events in the larger MCU:

There will be some interconnectivity, much like the movies. They will exist within the cinematic universe again, so this is all the same world as S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers.

Neither Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. nor any films released as part of Marvel’s “Phase 2″ have intimately explored what life is like in New York following the Chitauri invasion in The Avengers; there’ve been off-hand references, scattered here and there, but the larger focus in “Phase 2″ has been to examine how the Manhattan battle has affected life on (and beyond) planet Earth as a whole. As such, there’s a nice opening for the upcoming Netflix series to examine the daily going-ons in The Empire State, post-Avengers.

The worlds of characters like Daredevil and Luke Cage – previously brought to life in comic book stories as well as in a heavily-criticized movie with Daredevil – tend to be very different that those of such superheroes as Iron Man, Thor, and the like. Quesada offered his assurances that those differences will be reflected in the upcoming Netflix shows, when compared to the rest of Marvel’s shared film/television universe:

Although these are superhero stories, this is different now. This is the street level…this is the street level noir side of the Marvel Universe. Something that you haven’t really, really seen in any of our Marvel movies. And probably more ground level, than I think you’ve seen. This is not like us doing Batman, Dark Knight or any of that stuff. This is very Marvel doing street level superheroes.

Original Netflix programs (House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, etc.) have thus far been endowed with more flex room to flourish creatively than most network TV series. Our hope is that Marvel will take advantage of this, in order to allows these Hell’s Kitchen superhero series to break new ground for the studio – while still feeling like an extension of Marvel’s established brand, that is. Judging by Quesada’s comments, it sounds as though these Marvel Netflix shows could manage to pull off such a challenge.

Lastly, Quesada also touched on the status of Daredevil. Beside offering enthusiastic, if also vague, praise for the script work by Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, The Cabin in the Woods), the Marvel executive offers his assurances that casting news will be coming “really, really soon.”

He can’t do this alone. He’s been so adamant about being a lone wolf, about doing it himself, so I think that in order for him to get to The Defenders we needed this second season. We needed to see him be broken individually so that he can - he’s willing to form a team. The lesson that Matt has had to learn in the second season of Daredevil is that he needs help.

Was curious if we'd be seeing Daredevil season 3 or Jessica Jones season 2 prior to this but doesn't seem to be the case. Jones and Cage are close, and we know Cage and Iron Fist will be meeting up. Just really leaves Daredevil to get into the mix. Wonder if he'll be popping up in the next two series or if they'll leave the opening episodes of Defenders to set up the connections and team.
